  • Relaxed campsite opposite mountain bike trails in Afan Forest Park
  • Beach 25 minutes' drive away; 45 minutes to Gower Peninsula
  • Café/bar and food vans often open on weekends; barbecues permitted
Bryn Bettws Lodge is a family-run site deep inside the Afan Valley. With stunning views, this gorgeous spot is set at the top of a mountain inside the Afan Forest Park, surrounded by mature trees and green scenery. The ground isn't too step, but if you're looking for flat pitches, they're limited and can't be guaranteed. Accessible by lumpy and bumpy forestry roads, the site has a field with real toilets (and toilet roll) and a washing-up cabin with cold water only (boil some to get it hot) and fairy liquid and sponges. Want a shower? The shower block is 300 metres from the field and costs £2 per adult. Fires and barbecues are permitted as long as they're raised from the ground, or there's an under-cover barbecue area with hanging barbecues and tables in the field. Bryn Bettws Lodge does have a few catering options too. The main café and bar is open on weekends for breakfast (8.30am to 9.30am) and evening meals (3pm to 7.30pm); it sometimes opens during the week when there are enough guests, although during bad weather, it may be closed. There's a burger van open on weekends between 10am and 3pm, as well as an outdoor bar and pizza shack in the field open on weekends between 6pm and 9pm (again, this is weather dependent). Make your way to the hand-built wooden kids' park. The site is handily surrounded by mountain biking trails and tremendous walks. This is a fab spot for mountain bikers, hikers or anyone who wants to wake up to great views. There's a minimum noise policy after 10pm, but this applies to music only. If you expect to be in bed for 10pm in silence, then note that Bryn Bettws Lodge does not enforce a no-fun policy… expect people to be having campfires, barbecues and making the most of the experience with families and friends.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The field was beautiful, with soft grass perfect for walking barefoot. Stunning views across the valley made it a really scenic spot. The toilets and facilities were clean and well maintained, and the site gives you direct access to the surrounding hills and forest for walks straight from your tent. My young children loved the play area, and it was great that parents could sit and enjoy a drink while the kids played safely nearby.

Disliked On our first night, a group at the top of the field played loud music until 1am, which made it hard to sleep. Not the site’s fault, but still frustrating. The toilets are quite a walk if you pitch at the far end of the field, so it’s worth choosing your spot carefully. The washing-up area only had cold water—not a major issue, but it made cleaning up after a BBQ a bit tricky.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Loads of space, unlimited pitch size. Everything conveniently located. Toilets and shower block clean and all in good working order. Great to have cooked food options on site. Lovely friendly staff / owners. Stunning views and so relaxing. Felt like everyone was there with the same plan - to chill out completely.
Very chuffed to have been able to get a last minute pitch for August BH weekend. Just me and my teenage daughter (first time camping just the two of us). We had a lush time. Played catch on the grass, had a pint and a blue slushie at the lodge sat outside over looking the valley. I went for a walk up one of the bike trails, just bees and birds around me, was a great way to de-stress! We'll definitely be back - what a beautiful spot.

Disliked Nothing.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The freedom of being able to pitch our tent where we wanted it.
How clean the site was and spacious
The toilets and wash basin were all very clean and well maintained.
The kids loved the bike trails and the freedom to come and go as they please.
We were also able to enjoy in to the night with our friends as there was no one else around us with such a big field and no silly rules like most sites. Best thing is we only live 20 minutes away but felt like we were miles from home. We wish we booked for longer.

Disliked No hot water to wash plates etc but I understand why.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked -laid back style. Pitch up where you want & left us to it.
-it has everything you could need, but still has a rustic charm to it.
-lovely views.
-my kids loved the parks, and there were loads of families so made lots of friends.
-lots of walks, & great for off road cyclist routes.
-there’s food in the evenings, a bar & coffee shop in the morning

Disliked -rogue dogs!! Unfortunately there were many many dogs that were off leash the whole weekend. Which isn’t great for us as one of our dogs can be reactive. The dogs were constantly wondering into our pitch & going up to our dogs. Our dogs were kept leashed & anchored the whole weekend. It was very stressfull.
-can be a bit confusing about certain things such as showers etc when there are no owners about & reception is closed.
-perhaps a rule about cyclists riding around the campsite. A family with electric bikes were using them to go to & fro. However they were going fast, and across our pitch. On more than one occasion my children had to jump out the way!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or motorhome pitch

Liked We pitched in a furthest pitch away fro people for 8 nights. The location was fabulous. The pitch was fairly flat considering it is on the hill. There was an influx of people at the end of the week, but at some point there were only four tents on entire camp site.
Toilets were fairly clean, toilet paper available. Spacious washing up area. Showers available a short walk from the pitch for additional charge, fairly clean, hot water available.
Charging area was a treat for teenagers!
We had campfires every day and lots of BBQs.
Lovely playground for smaller kids, and lots of bike tracks if you are into mountain biking.
Also, hand made pizza was available on Saturday, a bit dear but lovely.
Some lovely walks around the area, a lot's of attractions just 30min drive from the camp site.
Communication with the host was easy and quick via chat.
We definitely enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it.

Disliked - gnats, annoying little things
- payment system for showers a bit fiddly

Local attractions

If you need a little bit of relaxing time to recover from all the activities at the forest park, how about a trip to the beach? It’ll take you about 25 minutes to drive to Aberavon beach or around 40 minutes to Ogmore-by-Sea, where you can also stop by at the castle. That said, there’s still scope for activity down at the coast: Ogmore has horse riding outings, while Rest Bay (half an hour’s drive) is well known for surfing and bodyboarding. Keen to keep the adventures coming? How about ziplining from a former colliery tower at Zip World Tower (35 minutes), tackling the trails of Bike Park Wales (45 minutes) or walking behind a curtain of water on the Four Waterfalls Walk (45 minutes)? After all that you might just need a little tot of whisky from the Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (35 minutes), or perhaps just a leisurely walk along one of the beaches of the Gower Peninsula (45 minutes).
