Pub a few minutes' walk away

  • Quiet rural site in St Brides Major, 15 minutes' walk from the beach
  • A 15-min drive from surf lessons and other watersports in Porthcawl
  • Two pubs and a farm shop within easy walking distance
It’s all about simple seaside stays at Pool Farm, a friendly, quiet rural site in the village of St Brides Major and a 15-minute stroll from Southerndown beach. This is a splendid spot for a laidback break, especially for families with kids, with plenty of fresh-air antics available along this stunning stretch of the south Wales coast. A riding centre is within driving distance in Ogmore-by-Sea and there’s a golf course a few minutes' drive away (beware sea views distracting you from your swing), and the Wales Coast Path is around 15 - 20 minutes walk away for a bit of leg stretching. Plus, of course, those beaches – bask on the sands in Southerndown or take the 15-minute drive to Porthcawl for surf lessons, kiteboarding and other coastal adventures. The site itself has been left blissfully straightforward, the peaceful pitches served by just the basics (showers, toilets and a washing-up area). A fab little farm shop is a few minutes’ walk away for organic meat supplies and there are a couple of pubs within walking distance for pints and food.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (no pets)

Liked Friendliness of hosts, very relaxed atmosphere. Toilets were cleaned daily to a high standard. Lovely to have the fridge and freezer and kettles as back up. Pick your own pitches were of a good size. Car park right next to camping and could take car on pitch to load. Very good location to all shops, the ideal location for Ogmore, Southerndown, and Porthcawl too. Also a pub just over the road if it all goes wrong! Gorgeous smell of a proper working farm (not to everyone’s tastes but it made my holiday!), with goats and cows nearby. Also lovely fresh eggs!

Disliked That we hadn’t booked to stay an extra night! It was a shame we didn’t have any internet or signal the whole time but other networks might have done. Some people would see that as a positive though!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Small pitch, but kept clean at all times. Small kitchens with access to the fridge, kettle and toaster.

Very friendly owners, felt welcomed and well looked after. We stayed at dog friendly pitch and kids loved chickens, ducks, horses and cows on the fields around us.

Bit further to the beach as expected however the walk was fantastic though woods and fields - with young kids would be around 30mins

And the fact we could buy free range eggs was a bonus

Will definitely be back!

Local attractions

Let’s start with those beaches… you can’t venture very far round these parts without stumbling upon one or the other. Southerndown beach (aka Dunraven Bay) is the closest, and a fab place for keen-eyed types to do a spot of fossil hunting or rockpooling. Ogmore-by-Sea and surfers' fave Rest Bay are other top picks nearby. Those who like their beach days served up with plenty of antics should head over to Porthcawl, 15 minutes away – here there’s a surf school, a kiteboarding centre and an activity centre that can fix up days of kayaking, canyoning and coasteering. Golfers can wield a club in Porthcawl or Southerndown, and riders can saddle up in Ogmore-by-Sea. If you fancy a break from the open air stuff, there’s a sizeable outlet shopping village 20 minutes’ drive from the site (also a fab place to pick up extra kit for your outdoorsy adventures).
