  • Peaceful site for families, couples and relaxed sorts
  • Well-priced café serving breakfasts, cream teas and off-licence sales
  • A 10-minute walk from Monknash beach
Sites with coast views, campfires allowed, a short stroll from the beach and an even shorter one to an award-winning pub should always get your holiday vote… add in an acclaimed café on site and a pub a couple of minutes' stroll down the road, and you'll likely hail Heritage Coast Campsite as a winner. Based in Glamorgan's Cowbridge and 10 minutes' walk from Monknash beach across public footpaths, the much-liked Heritage Coast comes with the Monks Rest Café, a recent venture from Phillipa, Glynn and team that dishes up breakfasts in the type of belly-busting size of which you might thoroughly approve. Cream teas, Friday night suppers, off-licence sales and properly-sized coffees/hot drinks are also on offer, all are at reasonable prices – and the café is quite arty and information-based too, with an art/photography gallery and heaps of leaflets and tourist info about the local area. Amenities include ladies' and gents' blocks each with two toilets, two showers, two sinks and a hand dryer, plus a hairdryer in the ladies'. Disabled bathroom facilities, a utility room with two basins (and hot water) and a freezer are also on site. Campfires are allowed if you want to sort your own nosh – ask Glyn or Philippa about hiring a fire basket – or you could have a meal at the award-winning Plough and Harrow pub two minutes' walk away where there's also live music on Saturday evenings. Whichever you decide, take time for sitting back as dusk falls to listen out for the hooting of the local owls: Heritage Coast Campsite is in a wildlife haven too...

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Good location, good clean facilities. Friend staff. Great walk to the beach. Beech is almost secret and very few people there. Very quiet campsite

Disliked: No phone reception or WiFi on site

From the manager: Thank you for taking time to review our site and local area. We are a Coastal/Country site, the pitches are situated in fields which is difficult with communication, however, while we don't have mobile or wifi across the fields we do have free wifi in the Café and are surrounding the patio and facilities. Access through BT Guest no password required.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Excellent staff who all pretty much seem to love and take pride in what they do. Great views of the sunset from our pitch Facilities were clean and well maintained Onsite bar with ice cream and snacks was perfect to return to after trip to the beach Firepit and logs provided seemed reasonably priced Walk to the beach (although longer than advertised 15 mins) was beautiful. Access via a fern gully was a delightful walk.

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The quiet rural location & the helpful/friendly staff.

Disliked: £30 seems a lot for a one night pitch, where you have to pay for a shower (£0.50) the showers were blistering hot 7 awkward to adjust, by the time it had settled down the time was halfway gone (Roughly 3 mins). The ladies showers were not indicated as which cubicle, so my daughter had to change showers once the water had started, then the shower was way to hot, so once adjusted it stopped...

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comments, it is helpful to know of any problems our guests experience. Had we known about the issue with the shower we would have been glad to help. You should enjoy a 5 minuet shower totally adjustable. The cost of £30 for 2 people per night is due to the considerable increase in our costs which have effected all businesses in Wales, particularly hospitality and tourism. We hope to see you in the future.

This site is overpriced for the facilities.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very nice area with a beautiful walk to the sea.

Disliked: We were allocated a pitch in the bottom field which has no facilities such as a water point. It is quite a walk to the toilets, only two cubicles in each of the men's and womens and no urinals - inadequate for the number of pitches. There is no disposal point for chemical toilets.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comments, feedback is always valuable. If we had know you had experience difficulty while on site we would have done our best to assist. There is a drinking water some 3 metres from the pitches, we have 5 toilets, 5 showers and a urinal. With regard to chemical disposal, we do not have a chemical disposal, as a seasonal campsite licenced with facilities for tents and campervans not caravans etc. Pleased to hear you enjoyed our location.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The location and views are beautiful. The pitch was a good size. Staff are very helpful and super friendly. We got a very warm welcome. Will definitely be booking again.

Disliked: Only 2 toilets and showers, got dirty very fast.. they did clean them regularly. Could maybe do with a few more toilets and free showers. This is only a minor thing, overall the site is fabulous

From the manager: Thank pleased to hear you enjoyed the location and views from our site. We have five toilets and five showers, clearly we love to have more but there are difficulties associated with planning and construction on a Coastal site. We very much hope to see you again.

Local attractions

Coastal walks, beaches, museums, castles and outdoor activities are all around to get stuck into. If you want to stick to the coast – it's a heritage one after all – try out one of the local surf schools or some fishing nearby at Penarth Beach or Wick. The Glamorgan Heritage Coast runs for 14 miles from Porthcawl to Aberthawl and has some highly scenic walks as well as even more scenic horse rides to be had on its beaches. Ogmore Castle and Fonmon Castle are two nearby sites to sort some Welsh history (as is the excellent St Fagans National History Museum a short drive away in Cardiff), and the National Trust's Dyffryn Gardens will be a good day out for green-fingered types. Also nearby, look for the local karting centre, Taskforce Skirmish Paintball and a few rounds of Welsh golf; have a look through the Heritage Coast Campsite info leaflets to get you started.
