  • Peaceful and family-friendly Glamorgan site bordering the River Taff
  • Castell Coch 10 minutes’ drive; Cardiff city centre 20 minutes
  • Communal kitchen and modern facilities; pub 20 minutes’ walk
Fancy a Glamorgan base with easy access to river fishing or wild swimming amid ancient woodland and peaceful valleys? Introducing Garth Glamping, 20 minutes’ drive from Cardiff city centre and bordering the River Taff at the foot of Garth Hill. Here you also have several fields – each framed by oak and beech – to explore, where you can exercise any four-legged pals and let the kids run around generally being kids. Helpful on-site facilities at this peaceful waterside spot include a pristine modern toilet block and shower enclosure a short stroll from the pitches, and a bottled water station for refilling your flasks and coolers. You'll also have use of a fridge/freezer, hob, kettle and gas barbecue in the communal kitchen area, where there’s a full set of crockery, cutlery, pots and pans and washing-up supplies – in short, everything you need for whipping up a simple supper or firing up the barbecue for an alfresco feast. When you’re ready to explore, follow marked woodland trails or wander quiet country lanes in the surrounding farmland. Cycle hire can be arranged locally if you’re after two-wheeled adventures, but when you’d rather simply sink into a deckchair with a glass of local craft cider and listen for the tawny owls, well, that’s all good too. There’s a pub 20 minutes’ walk from the site gates, and another one, plus a few shops, in the village of Pentyrch (10 minutes’ drive).

This campsite offers a peaceful, "wild camping" feel with beautiful natural surroundings by the River Taff. Visitors praised the clean and well-equipped facilities, including communal kitchen areas, and spacious pitches. The location is convenient for accessing Cardiff and local walks. While some noted occasional noise from nearby trains and roads, and minor issues like hot water faults have been reported and addressed by management, the overall experience is highly positive, with many guests expressing a desire to return.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked A lovely site, providing the feel of wild camping ... with good toilets and showers. A friendly pub within walking distance , and easy access to central Cardiff and Castell Coch. Garth Mountain walk can be accessed directly from the site, perhaps with a stop before and after at the pub ;)

Disliked Not really a "dislike" but a note for others - the access road is quite narrow, with few passing places. My VWT5 managed it fine, and I saw a VW crafter on site, but larger motorhomes may struggle.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The toilets and showers were clean. The location was beautiful and it was lovely and quiet during our stay, even saw a kingfisher on the river.

Disliked It would be great (depending on ownership) if the footpath that exits the campsite could have the grass mown or flattened to allow easier walking.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Size of site, plenty of spaces between pitches. A well stocked kitchen with spare utensils and stoves available. Fire pits provided, too.
Although there's a train line close, it didn't cause any issues.

Disliked For our stay, there was no hot water available. Boiler showed a fault to do with gas supply

From the manager: Thank you for your review, Callum. We’re delighted you enjoyed the spacious pitches, well-stocked kitchen, and peaceful surroundings.

We’re sorry that one of our shower boilers developed an unexpected gas supply fault during your stay. The issue affected a single shower block and was resolved within 24 hours. During that time, we still had two other hot showers available for guests to use across the site.

We appreciate your understanding and are pleased to hear you’d recommend us and would visit again. We hope to welcome you back to Garth Glamping in the future.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Such a peaceful campsite with a wild camping feel. We were lucky enough to have the campsite nearly to ourselves and had so much space for our group of 6 far away from lots of tents. Couldn't hear the other campers at all. The site is beautiful and the addition of the river access makes it all the better for a paddle on a hot day. Very tranquil. The facilities were lovely and the hot shower very good. Not far from a great local village pub and a great walk overlooking all of Cardiff up Garth hill. Would recommend to anyway. Although we didn't have longer to explore the site is well located to explore Cardiff, the surrounding countryside and walks plus the coast. Briefly met the owner who seemed really friendly and chilled. Site access instructions were easy. The addition of a covered kitchen was great when it started to rain.

Disliked We loved the site and would recommend it to all. So I wouldn't mark down based on any of these things but think it's Feedback worth giving.

Very few Negatives but my honest points and feedback. There is a train line running across the side of the site which does run late at night. We were the closest to the trains and we all said it didnt bother us and we all slept well. But others could not feel that way.

The trainline is fenced off and up a steep shale hill but some children and children who clearly had very irresponsible guardians (watching them do this may I add) kept getting over the fence and scalled the hill getting close the tracks. Which needless to say is incredibly dangerous!! Just to be clear this is NOT a fault of the site. The fencing and distance to the trainline is not a danger to any supervised or rationally thinking people. So very likely a one off. But having witnessed this and been given a heart attack just witnessing the stupidity. I'd maybe suggest to the owner to alter the fencing here to make this completely impossible for this to happen again. Again just to be clear, my 0negative reaction rests solely with the wildly irresponsible parents watching their children and teenagers do this. But for the sake of the site owners not to have this happen again on their property, I'm raising it.

Feedback I would give to the hosts. The locks on the showers and toilets could be improved with some hard to lock and others hard to open due to missing handles

In the shower I'd strongly recommend more and better hooks the ones provided hook loosely on the back of the shower doors and fall off easily not able to hang clothes or towels. Also as the floor of the shower room can get wet from the curtain I think its necessary to keep items dry. That or also the addition of a shelf to be able to rest a wash bag. Id say the same in the toilet. Those simple adjustments would make the use of those rooms far more easy to use.

From the manager: Thank you for such a lovely and detailed review. We’re so pleased you enjoyed the peace, space, river access and beautiful surroundings during your stay.

We really appreciate your constructive feedback too. Guest suggestions help us continue improving the site, and we’ll certainly take your comments on board regarding the facilities and railway boundary. Last week I contacted transport for Wales, who are responsible for the fencing to which they have already organised a visit to inspect. It’s a real shame when parents and guardians aren’t watching their children whilst with us as this causes not just potential danger to the children, but also often means communal areas of the site are left in a mess! We’re sorry you had to witness this.

It was a pleasure hosting you, and we hope to welcome you back to Garth Glamping again soon!

Best wishes,

Jordan & the Garth Glamping family

Liked Our stay at Garth Glamping was lush. We stayed in a yurt for the night which was set up so beautifully for us, including very comfy beds and a small fire pit outside for each yurt. The site is clean with all you need for a comfortable stay including a fridge, stove, running water lovely showers and loos. The area itself is beautiful with lots of wild flowers and spaces to wander off and just enough additional lighting to help you find your way in the dark, but not detract from the clear skies. We went for a dip in the river and watched as ducks, cormorants and a herons flew overhead, while tiny fish dotted around at our feet. It's a magic place and so close to the City you could easily do both things on your visit to Cardiff.

From the manager: Thank you so much, Sally, for such a lovely review ❤️

We’re so happy to hear you enjoyed your stay and were able to experience a little bit of what makes Garth Glamping so special to us.

We love that you found the perfect balance between peaceful countryside and easy access to Cardiff, it’s one of the things our guests enjoy most about the location.

Thank you for your kind words about the yurts and facilities too. We put a lot of care into creating a comfortable and welcoming space, so it means a great deal to hear that it made a difference to your stay.

It was a pleasure hosting you, Mark and Isabella, and we’d love to welcome you back to the farm again soon.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Silence, isolation, surrounding nature, friendly staff and guests, toilets and showers facilities always clean and tidy, well equipped kitchen with communal fridge, small playground for children, nearby river with stone beach, firewood available on site, possibility of renting a fire pit, huge tent pitch, and few more. In general our stay there was a pleasure!

Disliked narrow road with uneven surface to get to campsite with nearly no chance to pass oncomming vehicles. Proximity of the train line, but it wasn't so bad. Only two toilets for all pitch guests. No hooks for clothing in the showers, no bench or shelf to put your stuff on.

From the manager: Thanks so much for your review, Marcin! 😊 We’re really pleased you enjoyed the peaceful setting, riverside location and family-friendly atmosphere. It was a pleasure to host you and we’d love to welcome you and your family back to Garth Glamping again soon.

Local attractions

From your pitch, follow waymarked trails up the Garth (20 minutes’ walk) for views over Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. The 55-mile Taff Trail (for walkers and cyclists) passes close by too, so you can follow the scenic section to Pontypridd on largely traffic-free paths alongside the river. Heritage-lovers can tour the extraordinary Castell Coch (10 minutes’ drive), an ornate folly combining a medieval castle with Gothic-Victorian additions, or have a nose around Caerphilly Castle (15 minutes) with its drawbridges and battlements. Also well worth a visit is St Fagans National Museum of History (20 minutes), an open-air folk museum recreating Welsh life through historic buildings and crafts workshops. If the kids aren't taken with all that history, test their wits in themed escape games at Cardiff’s Puzzled Escape Rooms, or take them to Tenpin Cardiff Nantgarw (both 10 minutes) for bowling, arcade games and fast food in the diner. These also make great rainy day choices if the weather turns on you.
