General

  • Spacious site in the grounds of a pub 15 minutes' walk from the beach
  • Surfing, golf and horse riding within a few minutes' drive
  • Mobile bar, showers and drinking water available in the field

Fancy a pint? Want to walk for less than a minute to get your mitts on it? You’re in luck at the Three Golden Cups, a spacious family-friendly site that just happens to be handily located in the grounds of a friendly pub. Extra holiday points apply here for the fact that it’s only a 15-minute walk from the sandy beach of Dunraven Bay, with sea views from various corners of the site.

Pitch up in the grass field here (there’s plenty of space so you can afford to spread out) and you’ll be mere steps away from a range of beers and wines that can be supped in the cosy bar or out in the beer garden. Settle in for a little longer if you like and partake of the full menu of tasty snacks and meals. No guilty microwave ding here – everything’s freshly prepared by the in-house chefs.

When even that’s too far to haul yourself to acquire a drink, scooch on over to the mobile bar that’s been set up in the field to provide an even more convenient source of refreshment to weary travellers. If you’re just in need of a cooling drink, you can avail yourself of one of the drinking water taps around the field.

A quick amble across the field brings you to the toilet block, which has separate male and female shower facilities and a washing-up area. There’s no wifi at the site itself but you can login at the pub when you pop in to get your food and drinks.

If you’d prefer to turn your hand to cooking your own dinner you’re most welcome to light up a barbie on your pitch. The nearest supermarkets are 15 minutes’ drive away in Bridgend, but there’s a farm shop just a few minutes up the road where you can pick up local organic meats to chuck on the grill.

This site was fabulous, pitch size was enormous, staff extremely friendly, you could come and go as you pleased, the facilities were excellent too, clean not overcrowded, you could always access them and the showers. The beach is half a mile away, easily walked in 10 to 15 minutes or less in a car, lovely and clean and not overcrowded, would definitely recommend and will definitely be re-visiting.

Great location, pub and restaurant right next door, nice facilities, close to dramatic beach. Staff very welcoming.
Great short break from nearby Cardiff!

    Disliked:

I guess the field is a bit sloping in parts, but it was easy to find a flat and reasonably sheltered spot as not crowded, even on an August weekend.

The site is really lovely. Great views, very clean toilets and showers facilities and a great pub, run by some of the most welcoming staff I have known. They were so kind to us and did everything they could to make our stay as lovely as possible. The beach is only a 10 minute walk from the site and there are some great coastal walks to do.

We picked this campsite as it was attached to a pub that served food. Really disappointed when we couldn't have anything but pizza and chips at 7.30pm as the kitchen was closed! Had to drive to another pub for food so they lost out on our custom.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments. We strive to serve food all day and maintain an offer as long as we can. This is determined by staffing during the school holidays and increasing our kitchen staff hours beyond reasonable request. I hear you say get more staff. Recruiting in a small village destination pub has been in our 14 years the greatest challenge and have recently managed to staff food all day on Mondays where 3 local pubs near us don't even open. At 7.30pm the skilll set required to carry out the main menu are rested and we train bar staff to maintain a food offer until 9pm. Pizza and chips is food and has been extremely popular, we're sorry this did not meet your requirements on this occasion. Cheers from The Three Golden Cups.

Local attractions

Most guests’ first port of call from here is the beach at Dunraven Bay, a 15-minute walk away. Lots of beachy tastes are catered for here – there’s a sandy beach, a stretch of shingle and plenty of rock pools to pole about in. If you’d like to learn how to get on to the water or want to brush up your board technique, sign up for a surfing lesson at Southerndown Surf School, next to the beach.

If your idea of beach bliss involves a dream sequence of riding a horse in the surf, you can bring that to life with a seaside trek from the riding centre in Ogmore-by-Sea, five minutes’ drive from the site. Meanwhile, golfers can wield a club on the limestone heath course at Southerndown Golf Club, 10 minutes away, and walkers can hit the trails of the Wales Coast Path to hike for as long as they like (honestly – there’s 870 miles of path in total around the whole coastline).

Wales is famed for its castles, and your nearest here is Ogmore Castle, 10 minutes away – the Norman stone castle, part of which dates back to 1100, is still largely intact. A little further away (20 minutes from the site) is Coity Castle, which mainly dates from the 14th century and is a great place for kids to charge around and enact knights’ battles. Both of these sites are free to visit.
