  • Friendly and spacious park 10 minutes' drive from Barry Island beaches
  • Close to a bus stop for trips to Cardiff city centre, 10 miles away
  • In the grounds of a hotel; barbecues are permitted
City breaks are fab. Beach hols are fab too. So it surely follows that combining a bit of both with a south Wales stay at The Vale Park Hotel and Touring Site must be doubly fab. For your urban wanderings, it’s a 10-mile jaunt into Cardiff, where there’s heaps of stuff to keep you occupied for many a day on end: shops, museums, nightlife, the castle and rugby matches should get you off to a good start. One city aspect you’ll not need to experience is the search for a parking space, for there’s a handy bus that runs from a bus stop a few metres down the road from the site to the city centre. Time to make a break for the beach? It’s a mere 10 minutes’ drive to get to Barry Island for days of sandcastle building, fish and chip scoffing and family-friendly hours at the amusement arcades or Barry Island Pleasure Beach. And if it’s more exotic beaches you had in mind, you’re only 10 minutes’ walk from Cardiff Airport should the mood take you to leap on a flight somewhere more far-flung. Scoop up supermarket supplies while you’re in Barry and you’re welcome to stoke the coals of a barbecue back at base. Please note that the pitches here are next to a main road that may be busy.

What customers say

This is a friendly, welcoming campsite praised for its helpful owners and level pitches. Its convenient location for sightseeing is frequently highlighted. However, many reviews mention significant road noise and dated shower/toilet facilities that are often described as basic or in need of renovation. Some guests found the site expensive for the amenities offered.

Liked Overall, it was okay – but definitely not worth the £40 per night we paid.

The owners were super lovely and did keep checking in to see if we were all okay with the visit which isn’t something which normally happens when we have previously been away.

Disliked The site was a fair distance from pretty much everything except the airport, which meant a lot of walking along busy main roads just to reach the nearest bus stop. This wasn’t ideal, especially with young children in tow.

The shower blocks were very dated and in need of renovation. The biggest issue was that the lights would go out mid-shower, which made for a frustrating experience.

Noise levels were manageable during the day, but the layout of the site – a V-shape with main roads on both sides – meant that it wasn’t exactly peaceful at night. Motorbike noise, in particular, was quite loud and could easily disturb lighter sleepers.

While the bus into Barry itself was convenient once you got to the stop, the overall location and quality of facilities just didn’t justify the high nightly rate. I wouldn’t recommend it for families or those looking for a quiet, well-connected stay.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked Very close proximity to 2 major roads and the noise was horrendous and too close to other pitches, rubbish left on the ground at the remaining spaces and the owner had the worst attitude you could expect for a host. We were supposed to be there for 2 nights but left straight away as we just couldn't stay there .

Liked So welcoming and friendly. First time in our motor home and was great place to stay and learn. Really chilled owners - saw us in and left us to it for the rest of the time until the visit to the bar in the hotel and accommodated for us (putting on our football team on the bar TV) and even brought us out free snacks like chips, bread butter and gravy ! We will be returning !

Local attractions

The beach at Barry Island is a smashing sandy stretch that’s fab for families, with its sheltered shallow waters, numerous cafés and amusements to play with; it also welcomes dogs in certain areas. If you’re looking for something a little different, head half an hour along the coast to Southerndown for surf schools, or to Ogmore-by-Sea to ride horses along the sand. Cardiff’s a cracking city to visit, too – on top of a generous range of shops, restaurants and the like, the Welsh capital is also home to all manner of leisure facilities including an ice rink, go-kart track and whitewater rafting centre. If you’re after something a bit more cultural there are always shows to take in at the Wales Millennium Centre, and visits to Cardiff Castle and the excellent (and free) indoor/outdoor exhibits at St Fagans National Museum of History. More? There are three golf courses within a 10-minute drive, a designer outlet village half an hour away and a bunch more castles to saunter around (Fonmon Castle, five minutes away, is always good for a foray).
