  • Well-maintained rural site with pitches surrounded by trees
  • On the edge of Ruabon; Llangollen 15 minutes' drive
  • Easy access from A539; half a mile to pubs and a railway station
Set yourself up for leisurely North Wales breaks at James Caravan Park, a well-maintained site on the edge of the small town of Ruabon. There's a range of styles of pitches here, from grass-based basic options to hard-standing fully-serviced plots, plus a host of handy amenities like a centrally heated toilet and shower block. With easy access off the A539 dual carriageway, the park grounds are spacious and dotted with trees, but please be aware there may be some traffic noise. With so much room on site, your nearest neighbours are likely to be the various forms of local wildlife that flit among the trees (although when you're feeling more sociable, it's an easy half-mile walk to the nearest pub). The park is a 15-minute drive from the gorgeous town of Llangollen, the base of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests with an adventurous side have all sorts of activities to try out here, from river rafting to boating, trail riding and more. Larger towns and cities like Wrexham (10 minutes' drive), Chester (30 minutes) and Liverpool (50 minutes) are also well within reach for urban day trips. The nearest station is under 15 minutes' away on foot, making it easy to catch the train to Chester (journey time 20 minutes) or Shrewsbury (30 minutes) too.

What customers say

This campsite receives consistent praise for its exceptionally friendly and helpful staff, immaculate facilities, and well-maintained grounds featuring mature trees. Its convenient location offers easy access to local amenities, including shops and pubs, and serves as a good base for exploring the surrounding area. While generally peaceful, some visitors noted noticeable traffic noise from the nearby main road, which may affect light sleepers. Pitches are generally spacious, though some found them close together or slightly uneven.

Fully-serviced hardstanding pitch

Liked Friendly staff

Disliked Serviced pitch with hardstanding located amongst the seasonal pitches. Quite a few barking dogs and someone had a noisy night heater. Reving engines or generator.
Felt more like a travellers site.

Fully-serviced hardstanding pitch

Liked The staff were friendly and helpful. We incurred a flat tyre on the caravan on our way. The night warden called us and checked we were okay. We arrived on the Friday night a little before 7pm, the warden showed us to our pitch and guided us back.

Toilets, washing area and park was really clean and tidy.

Aldi, Shell, Greggs, Jacket potatoes can all within a very short distance of site.

Disliked The park is directly next to a main road that can be busy up until 11pm ish. It did not affect our stay but may be a consideration for others.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Convenient that it's close an an Aldi. Toilet block was reasonably clean. Nice to have trees near to camping area.

Disliked The coldest reception ever, the lady started an argument with my partner, absolutely unnecessary, and not what you need after a long journey.

And they tried to charge us random extra charges - bit of advice if you do decide to stay here, stand your ground and decline the extra charges, they'll back down eventually, because they know they're in the wrong.

The electric supply was far too far away, it basically wasn't an electric camp spot.

It's by a dual carriageway, so it's not that peaceful.

Ground was hard to knock tent pegs into.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Absolutely beautiful site with plenty of space between pitches. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Toilets/Showers were clean and the site is easily navigable. Read previous review regarding road noise, which yes it is quite noisy but thankfully had little to no effect on us even with me being a light sleeper.

Disliked Only one toilet/shower block right at the front of the site which thankfully wasn’t as issue for us but had my daughter awoke in the night it wouldn’t have been ideal. All the pitches in the glad hook up to the same point which meant wires trailing all over the place, just seemed an odd set up.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Nice staff. Good flat quiet pitch. 10 min walk into town. Couple of nice pubs serving food.

Disliked For some the traffic noise could be a problem. I was ok with it.

Fully-serviced hardstanding pitch

Liked Location was great for travelling around. Lovely pitches & surroundings.
Very clean
The new part time wardens we're really friendly.
Lots of information on days out, things to see & do.
Dog friendly.

Disliked Traffic noise, didn't bother us, but may bother some.
Wasn't sure about it initially as the site was mostly permanent live in caravans, but it was OK as mostly they were all friendly. No noise on site.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Amazing, almost magical site. Great facilities and service from the owners. It felt a bit like a scene from the Hobbit, very private pitch surrounded by huge trees. I could have stayed here a few more days.....

Disliked A bit too close to the A483 ( busy road ).
Be wary of some SatNavs - it won't find the site. Suggest Google Maps. Or ask the owners to email you a reliable map.

Electric grass pitch

Liked A lovely maintained site, staff friendly and welcoming. The site was located just right for our needs, for this trip, but is next to a dual carriageway so ithere s constant traffic noise.
Located near by is a service station which will cater for most peoples needs and an Aldi store next to it.
We were on a grass electric hook-up. Which we found too far from the facilities .
The showers block very clean, and we'll maintained but we found there was not neogh showers foe the size of the site, especially in busy periods ,
The site was dog friendly which allowed us to take our dogs with us.

Local attractions

Hoping for history? You've come to the right place. Take a trip to Chirk Castle (10 minutes' drive) and discover one of the most impressive Marcher fortresses on the border between England and Wales. Afterwards, similarly scenic and historic times are to be had at the National Trust-run Erddig Estate (15 minutes), a spectacular Grade I-listed property with fab formal grounds. Water has done such a lot to shape the Welsh landscape, and the area surrounding James Caravan Park has a fair bit of the wet stuff to admire. Check out the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (10 minutes) on the Shropshire Union Canal to see an exceptional feat of Victorian engineering, and stick around to take a boat ride by its arches along the river Dee. For a break with one foot in Wales and the other in England, trundle along by train to Chester Zoo (or drive there in 30 minutes), take yourself off to Tate Liverpool (50 minutes) for art and culture, or – if you really want to make the kids' day – organise a jaunt to the high-adrenaline rides at Gulliver's World Theme Park (50 minutes).
