James Caravan Park: Entrance

General

  • Well-maintained rural site with pitches surrounded by trees
  • On the edge of Ruabon; Llangollen 15 minutes' drive
  • Dedicated dog-walking area; half a mile to pubs and a railway station

Set yourself up for leisurely North Wales breaks at James Caravan Park, a well-maintained site on the edge of the small town of Ruabon. There's a range of styles of pitches here, from grass-based basic options to hard-standing fully-serviced plots, plus a host of handy amenities like a centrally-heated toilet and shower block and a dedicated dog-walking area.

The park grounds are spacious, green and dotted with trees. With so much room, your nearest neighbours are likely to be the various forms of local wildlife that flit between the branches (although when you're feeling more sociable it's an easy half-mile walk to the nearest pub).

The park is a 15-minute drive from the gorgeous town of Llangollen, the base of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests with an adventurous side have all sorts of activities to try out here, from river rafting to boating, trail riding and more.

Larger towns and cities like Wrexham (10 minutes' drive), Chester (30 minutes) and Liverpool (50 minutes) are also well within reach for urban day trips. The nearest station is under 15 minutes' away on foot, making it easy to catch the train to Chester (journey time 20 minutes) or Shrewsbury (30 minutes) too.

Please note

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Very helpful staff. Friendly family site - lots of kids about! - which suited us. I've seen comments about traffic noise but this was only one part of the site - the bit we were in was quiet. Close to an Aldi for provisions (could even walk there).

We were found a lovely walk (and swim!) around Colemere lake(mere?) about 25 minutes walk. About mile and a half walk around and ideal for dogs (and free car park).

    Disliked:

    No hot water for dishwashing.

Bit confusing where entry code box was for entry (on right a few yards back - so you are entering on the right, not the left.

We were greeted by the lovely manager, who showed us to our pitch.

    Disliked:

I feel they need a better system with the rubbish ,as the bins were over flowing when we arrived and only got worst .
The site need some poo bins .
It’s a large site but only has three toilets and two showers In each side eg womens/ mens. These need cleaning more often.
It just has one sink to wash up in ,so again people were having to queue .

Friendly and helpful staff. Pitch level and clean with closely cropped grass. Water tap close by with access to outdoor sink and hot water for washing up. Spacious site with beautiful mature trees, dog friendly. Close to budget supermarket.

    Disliked:

Staffing levels not adequate to keep up with cleaning of toilets and sinks when site became busy. Toilets need updating as flushing mechanism was unreliable! Outside bins overly full. Road noise could be overwhelming at times, during the night.

Local attractions

Hoping for history? You've come to the right place. Take a trip to Chirk Castle (10 minutes' drive) and discover one of the most impressive Marcher fortresses on the border between England and Wales. Afterwards, similarly scenic and historic times are to be had at the National Trust-run Erddig Estate (15 minutes), a spectacular Grade I-listed property with fab formal grounds.

Water has done such a lot to shape the Welsh landscape, and the area surrounding James Caravan Park has a fair bit of the wet stuff to admire. Check out the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (10 minutes) on the Shropshire Union Canal to see an exceptional feat of Victorian engineering, and stick around to take a boat ride by its arches along the river Dee.

For a break with one foot in Wales and the other in England, trundle along by train to Chester Zoo (or drive there in 30 minutes), take yourself off to Tate Liverpool (50 minutes) for art and culture, or – if you really want to make the kids' day – organise a jaunt to the high-adrenaline rides at Gulliver's World Theme Park (50 minutes).
