James Caravan Park: Very spacious

General

  • Well-maintained rural site with pitches surrounded by trees
  • On the edge of Ruabon; Llangollen 15 minutes' drive
  • Easy access from A539; half a mile to pubs and a railway station

Set yourself up for leisurely North Wales breaks at James Caravan Park, a well-maintained site on the edge of the small town of Ruabon. There's a range of styles of pitches here, from grass-based basic options to hard-standing fully-serviced plots, plus a host of handy amenities like a centrally heated toilet and shower block.

With easy access off the A539 dual carriageway, the park grounds are spacious and dotted with trees, but please be aware there may be some traffic noise. With so much room on site, your nearest neighbours are likely to be the various forms of local wildlife that flit among the trees (although when you're feeling more sociable, it's an easy half-mile walk to the nearest pub).

The park is a 15-minute drive from the gorgeous town of Llangollen, the base of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests with an adventurous side have all sorts of activities to try out here, from river rafting to boating, trail riding and more.

Larger towns and cities like Wrexham (10 minutes' drive), Chester (30 minutes) and Liverpool (50 minutes) are also well within reach for urban day trips. The nearest station is under 15 minutes' away on foot, making it easy to catch the train to Chester (journey time 20 minutes) or Shrewsbury (30 minutes) too.

Please note

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Chilled out clientele. Not one of the late night noisy campsites out there, good for a family trip. There is a nearby Aldi l, Petrol station and Londis. Nearby peaceful Ruaban has several pubs one of which that serves food

Really well maintained site; grounds staff always busy keeping the site clean and tidy, beautiful site. Campfires and barbecues allowed and the kids loved it- there’s a field for them to play games and kick a ball. Clean toilet facilities. Great size pitches, all nice and flat, ours was also fully serviced. Staff really friendly and helpful. Local to lots of places like the Aquaducts, nature reserve and parks (all within about 15 minutes drive). There’s also an Aldi Subway and Shell garage just left out the campsite so we never had far to go for stuff to put on the BBQ. Kids loved the ice cream van that comes on to the site- an extra little plus going in the sites favour.

    Disliked:

The main downside was the road noise, as the site is located right off the main road, however we quickly got used to it.
The toilet facilities were basic, only two showers in both the ladies and mens. The husband said one of the showers wasn’t great but the other was fine. It wouldn’t stop us going again as we did have a really lovely time and it was a lovely site all in all. Depending on your network the internet can be a bit hit and miss. 02 seemed fine whilst orange had poor signal, but if we walked a bit further up the hill it seemed to get better so it may just be that our caravan was in a bit of a dip.

Lovey small site, very friendly staff, can't do enough for you to help. Could hire a fire out which was great. Shops just a 5min waln away, small town just a 20 min walk away. Good check out time at 12pm.

    Disliked:

Could do with another wash up sink. Wasn't a problem, but sometimes there would be a queue to wash you pots.

The staff are so friendly, nothing is any bother for them. Nice big site, toilets and showers were very clean & there is access to a 24 hour garage and aldi all within a 5 minute walk, a lot of the reviews say the road was too noisy however we didn’t find this at all, I think it’s just where you are situated. There is a little bit of background noise but not enough to make you lose any sleep.

    Disliked:

Nothing to really dislike, apart from very noisy neighbours playing music really loud from 1am-3am but that’s no fault of the owners

Local attractions

Hoping for history? You've come to the right place. Take a trip to Chirk Castle (10 minutes' drive) and discover one of the most impressive Marcher fortresses on the border between England and Wales. Afterwards, similarly scenic and historic times are to be had at the National Trust-run Erddig Estate (15 minutes), a spectacular Grade I-listed property with fab formal grounds.

Water has done such a lot to shape the Welsh landscape, and the area surrounding James Caravan Park has a fair bit of the wet stuff to admire. Check out the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (10 minutes) on the Shropshire Union Canal to see an exceptional feat of Victorian engineering, and stick around to take a boat ride by its arches along the river Dee.

For a break with one foot in Wales and the other in England, trundle along by train to Chester Zoo (or drive there in 30 minutes), take yourself off to Tate Liverpool (50 minutes) for art and culture, or – if you really want to make the kids' day – organise a jaunt to the high-adrenaline rides at Gulliver's World Theme Park (50 minutes).

Must see

  • Chester Castle (15.4 miles)
  • Cheshire Military Museum (15.4 miles)
  • Chester Cathedral (15.8 miles)

  • Chirk Castle (3.9 miles)
