  • On-site walks around a nature reserve and solar farm; dogs welcome
You don’t have to be a fishing fanatic to stay at Trench Farm Fisheries and Touring Park… but it does help. This smashing site, a few minutes’ drive from Penley and 20 from Wrexham, has three pools stocked with mirror carp, common carp, crucian carp, rudd, roach and tench to busy yourself with. And if you fancy a day off from angling? Get to grips with the other parts of this 150-acre farm and woodland: maps are available to guide you on your strolls and there’s abundant wildlife – think everything from birds and butterflies to badgers, foxes, hares and water voles – to keep your eyes peeled for enroute. During early evenings, listen out for the owls; if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of one fluttering over the paddock in search of prey. A 50-acre solar farm is on site too, which folk interested in renewable energy are welcome to amble around; this is also a fab walk if you’re bringing your furriest family member along for the hol (the park is dog-friendly, but canines must be kept on a lead). Venturing off base? The route between Colemere and Ellesmere along the Shropshire Union Canal is another fine choice for a scenic stroll.

Local attractions

Not just here for the fishing? Great: there’s plenty to keep you occupied in the region. If you’re sweet on stately structures, wander around Whittington Castle, Chirk Castle and Erddig Hall (all within 15 to 20 minutes), mixing things up with a trip to peer at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (20 minutes) too. Got tiddlers to entertain? Take them to the Park Hall Countryside Experience for farmyard forays or let them get up close and personal with the impressive birds at Shropshire Falconry (both 20 minutes). Animals aplenty are at Chester Zoo (40 minutes) as well – one of the most highly rated attractions in the area – and the kids can channel their inner monkey while leaping through the trees at the Go Ape Delamere Forest (45 minutes) or on the slides, rope swings and climbing frames (40 minutes) of The Crocky Trail adventure park. For sedate strolls out in the open air, set off for the Shropshire Sculpture Park (20 minutes), then have a gander at the gardens of Trentham Estate, which also has a shopping village (plus more treetop adventures if the nippers aren’t fed of mimicking monkeys yet…).
