  • Pop-up North Wales meadow site near rural Whitchurch
  • A 15-minute walk to Hanmer Mere; half an hour to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
  • Large undercover communal area with tables and chairs
Always fancied the idea of wild swimming? Book a stay at pet-friendly Moss Lane Cottage near Whitchurch and don’t forget to pack your swimmers. You’ll be needing them, as this peaceful pop-up site is in the quiet North Wales village of Hanmer, which edges a large lake known as Hanmer Mere – a mighty popular spot with open-water swimmers. Covering 2.5 acres across two fields – one for tents and tourers and one for off-grid tents – the site is sheltered by trees on two sides and accessed down a farm track. If you’re looking for an alfresco family adventure, groups are welcome to pitch up together on the camping field, which is perfectly level. It’s a cinch to access safe and quiet lanes from the site for cycling or hiking down to the mere (five minutes by bike or 15 minutes on foot). After taking a refreshing dip, you might like to head to the local village pub (five minutes’ drive, dogs welcome) for a rejuvenating pint. Simple facilities back on site include a washing-up area and a shared fridge. There's an ensuite facility housed in a horse trailer, which has a compost toilet, a hand-washing basin with hot and cold running water and a gas shower (just one of the three showers across the site). A covered and communal eating area is also provided for you to catch up with family and new-found friends at the end of a day’s adventuring.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great facilities, easily accessible, plenty of open space for the children to play. Fridge and freezer was an absolute bonus. Attentive staff. Able to book another night, access to logs and fire pit hire saving space of bringing our own in the car. Clear skies complete with shooting stars. Aldi in close driving distance. Outside shower facility was fab! Homemade jams available for purchase.

Disliked Nothing about the campsite.

Minor issue regarding other guests (group booking of 3 tents) and late night partying which was quickly and appropriately dealt with by staff. Again not a site issue but older teen (16) from other booking calling my 7 year old neurodivergent child names 'ginger weirdo'.

Multiple times myself and my party cleaned up mess/rocks left in the barn from the other booking as we did not allow our children in unattended. We did not have to do this but camping courtesy was mildly lost by others and it would be a shame for such lovely facilities to not be looked after to be available in the future.

Electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great stay , lovely location . walking distance to Hanmer Lake . 15 mins drive to ellesmere country park. Site has large pitches and you can buy firewood and hire a fire for £10 which was enough for 2 nights . The barn has fridge freezers , microwave , toaster and kettle , with chairs and tables , all kept very clean . Indoor toilet and shower very clean. Outside toilet had cobwebs , which did not bother us at all as it is outside , it also had a large sink and mirror. Washing up sink had hot water. Our little grandson got a thorn in his foot , host was very kind and helped us take it out . Would definitely recommend this site .

Electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The location; it’s very quiet and only 15 min. walk to village Hanmere, lake and a dog friendly pub that serve food. Lovely owners. Spacious pitch. Good internet connection

Disliked Had to wait a couple of times to be able to use bathroom as there’s only one shower.

From the manager: Sorry that there was disturbance in the camp. I did go around the site at 10 pm as that is the curfew time on radios- they turned it off then when asked.
PS there is a second shower which is in a shed behind the main block- very spacious.

Electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This is a great family friendly site with a great communal area with lots to do, such as a Dartboard, magnetic dartboard, ping pong table, table top football and a box full of other games. There is also a kettle, toaster and microwave to use during your stay. They have good toilet and shower facilities and a range of recycling bins. You can buy wood and hire a fire pit and they bring you everything you need. We had a great stay and would definitely recommend.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Quiet campsite with a back to basics feel. The area is beautiful. Hanmer Mere is a short 15 minute walk away where you can enjoy wild swimming. Unfortunately, inflatables and paddleboards are not allowed on the water. Hosts were lovel.

Disliked There is a Peacock on the site that likes to scream through the night and into the morning!

Local attractions

The water's not too cold apparently, but it's still best if you can pick a warm summer’s day for a swim in Hanmer Mere (15 minutes’ walk) so that you can have a bit of a laze on the small sandy beach after all your exertions. Other local wild-swimming spots include Whitemere (10 minutes’ drive) and Ellesmere (15 minutes). No need to swim if it’s just not your thing; both these lakes also have scenic walks bordering the water, and at Ellesmere you can keep a look out for sculpture hidden in the trees. Alderford Lake (15 minutes) is another lush spot with a water park, a safe alternative to wild swimming for kids, and a shop and café. Water features large hereabouts. There’s more hiking at Whixall Moss (20 minutes), with many paths through peaty marshland. The Llangollen Canal is carried across the River Dee at the majestic Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (half an hour), a lovely spot for canal-side walks and awesome views. You can also potter down the canal by horse-drawn barge, or hire day boats from Whittington Wharf (20 minutes). For more adventurous days out, the River Dee provides challenging canoeing at Llangollen (35 minutes), and if that’s still too tame for you, try white-water rafting at the National White Water Centre near Bala (an hour).
