Campsite Review – Gadlys, Church Bay, Anglesey LL65 4ES

We’re regular campers (tent) and have stayed at many sites throughout the UK. My wife works in a school, I am a retired teacher. This year we decided to get away as soon as term ended so booked from Saturday 23rd July for 8 nights at Gadlys, our first holiday on Anglesey, having obtained information from the Camping and Caravanning Club’s handbook.

For us one of the biggest deciding factors was closeness to the sea but that didn’t prepare us for the spectacular views of a panorama including Holyhead and its frequent ferries, and a vast, vast vista of ocean. Most impressive though were the superb sunsets directly in front of us.

Electric point units, set at the top of the site, have an even better view – and the view gets even better from the dog-friendly pub further up the hill! Important to us because we have a dog (and also like a drink). There’s a field reserved for dog-walking at the site. Being on a hill there was some sloping on our pitch. Our fridge had to be propped up, to level it to get it to work - but otherwise it didn’t affect overall comfort.

The arrangements for shower and toilet is an important factor for us on these smaller Certified sites (can vary!) wondering, before arriving, whether the two unisex showers and WC’s would be adequate. They were – there was never any occasion when we had to wait for them to become available, and they were always kept very clean with sufficient supplies of toilet paper and hand wash. The (free) showers were good, providing constant hot water.

We then began to discover just what a gem of a place this was turning out to be. A few minutes’ walk and you’re on a magnificent beach at Church Bay, with access both ways along the Anglesey Coastal path to many more beaches, or excellent cliff walks. We couldn’t believe how lucky we were to have a beach entirely to ourselves for one particular day, and in high season.
    .
Church Bay has a snack van open on a morning and evenings (except Monday) a lovely café open Thursday-Sunday on the road above the beach, as well as a high profile seafood restaurant.

The fresh air and beauty of the place was beginning to have its desired effect, so much so that we were both hoping we could stay longer, and a tremendous advantage for us was having wardens available on-site who could confirm that space was available – so we booked another six nights. Having wardens on-site helped in other ways too. It’s reassuring to know there’s someone keeping a constant eye on things, as we have had heard of thefts at other sites (someone’s caravan broken into with jewellery stolen). It meant that some campers playing football in the middle of the site were politely redirected to play in the dog walking area, it meant someone on hand to boost-start my car battery flattened by charging phones etc. then even offering to charge them for us on their electric. It meant someone to provide extra guy ropes and guys for a particularly windy day, and someone to get our fridge working by providing the blocks of wood to level it.

At the entrance to the site there’s a small cupboard and honesty box where home baked cakes are regularly placed - and they are superb. It’s that kind of site – small, quiet, unobtrusive, but with so many advantages, being set in such a truly beautiful place. For us, to obtain a holiday of this quality usually meant a six hour drive to Cornwall from where we live (Leeds), whereas the drive to here is three hours (take care though - it’s on very well used roads, so avoid travelling at peak times if possible).

We both agreed that this was one of the best camping holidays we have ever had, if not the best. So, we re-booked again from Friday 19th August for seven nights. And, because high winds were forecast the following day, we were greeted this time by a windbreak, protecting our pitch... installed by the very thoughtful and helpful wardens

    Disliked:

There wasn't a washing up area, and the only washbasin didn't supply hot water.

Although the campsite is very quiet, there is a seafood unit close by which is noisy at odd times, presumably to deal with the fresh-caught catch.

You cannot buy provisions in Church Bay, but have to drive to the nearest shop some three miles away. To buy takeaways, shop a butcher's, obtain hardware etc. it's a about a six mile drive to Valley (note - name of a village).
