  • Family-run site on a working beef and sheep farm on the Llŷn Peninsula
  • Within 15 minutes’ walk of Aberadon village and beach
  • Shops, bakery, cafés and the Wales Coast Path in Aberdaron
You’ll barely need to drive once you arrive at Maes Carafanau Gwythrian Caravan Site, a family-run site on a working beef and sheep farm on the Llŷn Peninsula. This handy site is only a 15-minute walk from Aberadon village, where there’s a wide, sandy beach as well as shops, cafés and a bakery. From the village, get stuck into surfing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding in the bay, or lace up your walking boots and go rambling along the Wales Coast Path to other sandy beaches and rocky coves. Aberadon is a nice little village to spend your time in, with St Hywyn’s Church above the beach dating back to the 11th century. When you're ready to put on the seatbelt and drive elsewhere on the Llŷn Peninsula, there are several beaches within a short drive of the site, including Traeth Porthor (five minutes’ drive away) and Porth Neigwl (half an hour). The farm is in the Llŷn Peninsula National Landscape and surrounded by hills, valleys and lush, green fields with wildflowers, so there are plenty of places to walk or cycle along the small country lanes while soaking in the views. Amenities-wise, Maes Carafanau Gwythrian Caravan Site has a set of modern toilets and showers, as well as washing-up facilities. The sun sets fashionably behind the farm fields, which are grazed by sheep and cows.

Local attractions

By now, you’re probably well aware that Aberadon beach is within walking distance of the farm, and that plenty of other beaches are accessible via the Wales Coast Path or a quick trip in the car. One of those splendid spots is Porthor beach (five minutes’ drive), known for its ‘whistling sands’; slide your feet along the sand to get the full effect. A little further away is Porth Neigwl (half an hour), also called Hell’s Mouth. Surfers flock to this beach for the big waves from the Atlantic, although on calmer days, it’s also a nice spot for sea kayaking. While you’re headed in that direction, perhaps take a short detour to the tearoom and ornamental garden at the National Trust’s Plas yn Rhiw (15 minutes), where the 16th-century manor house was restored by the Keating sisters Boat trips depart from Porth Meudwy (10 minutes) to the nearby Bardsey Island – keep your eyes peeled for choughs, grey seals and puffins – and while you’re here, you could also get to know Pwllheli (35 minutes), the peninsula’s lively market town. The modern marina is a busy base for watersports and sailing in Cardigan Bay. If you’re keen to see more wildlife, boats also go out in search of dolphins, seals and birds.
