  • Well-maintained family site just over a mile from Tywyn
  • In the Snowdonia National Park half an hour's drive from Dolgellau
  • Access to woodland walks and fishing on the Dysynni river
Calling all walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers, beachgoers… there's a lovely base for all of you at Ynysymaengwyn Caravan and Camping Park, in the grounds of a ruined old manor house in rural Gwynedd, just over a mile from Tywyn and its beach. This is a peaceful spot indeed for a break, as the pitches are surrounded by woodland where you can head out for walks (with your dog by your side if you’ve brought them along for the ride) or follow the orienteering course for a bit more of a challenge. There's also an adventure playground to keep the kids busy, plus access to the Dysynni river at the bottom of the site for anglers to fish for salmon and trout. This is a park that likes to keep things simple and relaxed rather than providing lots of entertainment, but it’s got all the essential facilities sorted including a launderette, an Elsan point and toilets and showers with accessible facilities. The location of the park is at the southern tip of the Snowdonia National Park and very close to the coast, so there’s no shortage of things to do – whether you’d like hardcore hiking or something rather more gentle. And you shouldn’t go hungry either, as Tywyn has a good collection of places to eat including cafés, chip shops, takeaways and restaurants. The town also has a supermarket and bakery if you’d rather sort your own meals back at base or pick up picnic bits.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (maximum 4-berth)

Liked We really liked the location to Tywyn that this site gave us.
The pitch that we had was spacious and we were able to choose the pitch ourselves. We had a lovely space in front of us for our son to play. We had lots of shade under the trees although we found it mostly hilarious the amount of acorns falling from the trees which sounded like pellets hitting our tent. Fine during the day but quite noisy at night when the wind picked up! :D
The shower and toilet facilities were always clean and the showers were lovely :D
The views across snowdonia national park were stunning.
The site in itself was lovely and quiet during the day, lots of children playing in the evening and the ice cream man turning up most days at about 6pm.
There was lots to do on site although we didn't stay long enough to explore - the weather was so good we spent most of it at the beach. We didn't got to the park (which looked fab) it was a few mins walk from the camping area.
We had a really lovely stay, and would definitely return however would like to be able to request a pitch next time to ensure we get a decent one again.

Disliked Although we liked being able to choose our pitch, I think we were lucky turning up at the time we did for the bank holiday weekend as lots of people turning up later in the day or the next day were driving around for a while trying to find a spot which were difficult to find and quite close to other tents.
Nothing major but a couple of extra sinks to wash up would be nice as people were queuing to do their washing.
We didn't report so can't complain too much but there were a couple of noisy campers passed the 11pm cut off - shouting etc at 12am!

Electric optional grass tent pitch (maximum 4-berth)

Liked Everything! The site was great, our pitch was tucked away on the tree libe so we had great views of the sunset and the mountains to the front of site. The facilities were spotless and everything you need.

Disliked Nothing really. You cant do much about the crows, there were there first!!

Electric optional grass tent pitch (maximum 4-berth)

Liked I chose this site because of others’ reviews and it did not disappoint. The views were stunning; the site was very flat; the hosts were helpful and friendly; the facilities were always clean and there was never a queue for toilet or shower!
Tywyn and its beach are a manageable walk away, and we were able to get any groceries we needed at the Co-op, Spar, or Premier food shops in town.
The setting is perfect as a base for exploring; we visited Aberdyfi, Machynlleth, Dolgellau and Dolgoch Falls. We aren’t especially walkers, but Cadair Idris is nearby. The woodland walk, complete with ruined mansion!, at the back of the site provided an enjoyable, easy stroll.
I know it’s down to the local council and not the site specifically, but I was very pleasantly surprised by the extensive recycling facilities, including Tetra-Pak, plastic bags and food waste, in addition to the standard paper, glass, plastic and tins/cans.
Completely out of anyone’s control was the weather, which was perfect: mostly sunny, warm but not scorching, and dry.
Others have mentioned the crows as a negative thing; they were definitely mightily vocal in the early evening, but I found it more entertaining than anything else.
Finally, the price was very fair for a good-sized pitch with EHU.
We almost never go back to the same campsite twice, but we might just have to make an exception with Ynysymaengwen.
Thank you for a beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable week!

Disliked There is nothing major, just a few things that future campers might find helpful:
The freezer for refreshing ice packs is only accessible during Reception opening hours.
The ground is stony in places, so you may need heavy-duty pegs (although we managed with standard pegs and adjusting placement/angle).
Although there were no queues for toilet or shower, there were regular queues for washing-up at peak times.

Local attractions

As well as being your nearest source of food, Tywyn’s a great little seaside town with a sandy beach, miniature golf, pitch and putt and tennis courts. It’s also the starting point for the Talyllyn Railway, which runs into the countryside for a scenic ride – a particularly nice way to do it is to ride to Dolgoch and walk to its waterfall before a cuppa in the tea rooms. Walkers may like to set out on the Wales Coast Path or head inland for a wander along the shores of Tal-y-llyn lake (15 minutes’ drive), scramble up the slopes of Penygader (20 minutes) or head to the walking hub of Dolgellau (half an hour) to explore the trails around there. Mountain bikers, meanwhile, will no doubt want to tackle the trails of Coed-y-Brenin (45 minutes) while birdwatchers learn about the residents of Dyfi Osprey Project (half an hour). Once you’ve spent some time on the sands of Tywyn, head a little further along the coast to explore the dunes of Ynyslas Nature Reserve and see the petrified forest at Borth (both 45 minutes).
