  • Well-maintained family site just over a mile from Tywyn
  • In the Snowdonia National Park half an hour's drive from Dolgellau
  • Access to woodland walks and fishing on the Dysynni river
Calling all walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers, beachgoers… there's a lovely base for all of you at Ynysymaengwyn Caravan and Camping Park, in the grounds of a ruined old manor house in rural Gwynedd, just over a mile from Tywyn and its beach. This is a peaceful spot indeed for a break, as the pitches are surrounded by woodland where you can head out for walks (with your dog by your side if you’ve brought them along for the ride) or follow the orienteering course for a bit more of a challenge. There's also an adventure playground to keep the kids busy, plus access to the Dysynni river at the bottom of the site for anglers to fish for salmon and trout. This is a park that likes to keep things simple and relaxed rather than providing lots of entertainment, but it’s got all the essential facilities sorted including a launderette, an Elsan point and toilets and showers with accessible facilities. The location of the park is at the southern tip of the Snowdonia National Park and very close to the coast, so there’s no shortage of things to do – whether you’d like hardcore hiking or something rather more gentle. And you shouldn’t go hungry either, as Tywyn has a good collection of places to eat including cafés, chip shops, takeaways and restaurants. The town also has a supermarket and bakery if you’d rather sort your own meals back at base or pick up picnic bits.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (maximum 4-berth)

Liked Lots of space to pitch up, clean toilets, beautiful site with woodland walks and a good play area for kids. Hosts were very welcoming and accommodating.

Disliked Nothing, but bring hard ground tent pegs. Essential after the dry weather.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (maximum 4-berth)

Liked The toilet facilities were very clean.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Disliked The campsite was too small and the pitches were extremely close together, with virtually no space between them.
It was very noisy at night, making it difficult to sleep. We could hear people talking, laughing, playing, coughing and even snoring from the neighbouring pitches.
There was also very little space for children to play, so the campsite felt overcrowded.

From the manager: Afternoon,

Thank you for your honest review.
The quiet hours between 11pm to 7am are policed, as discussed with you in reception it is important for customers to report noise at the time it's happening for the managers to deal with it accordingly.
We have got a large playground on site and a large walled garden for children to play.

Kind regards

Christina

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked Large pitches with plenty of space. Our hardstanding gravel pitch easily accommodated our campervan and large awning. BBQs are allowed, which was a big plus. The toilet and shower facilities were large and clean, and seemed to be cleaned around twice a day. There are two washing-up areas, recycling bins, a water disposal point and a chemical disposal point. The playground and plenty of open space were great for walking with a pushchair and for children to have some freedom to run around. Communication was easy and check-in was quick and straightforward. We were also pitched in a row right next to the road, but the noise from cars did not disturb our sleep and there was very little traffic at night.

Disliked Our hardstanding gravel pitch had quite a significant slope. Even with levelling ramps, it was difficult to get the campervan level, so we had to leave it slightly tilted. I think it was the only row right by the road with such a big slope, as the rest of the field was quite flat. At busy times, the two washing-up areas could also get quite busy and we sometimes had to wait for a sink.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked Great expanse of park beyond the area used by tents/caravans/vans. Great woodlands to explore and keep children occupied. Set in beautiful countryside with extensive river and/or hill walks.
The toilets and showers were always clean with ample hot water for dishwashing etc.

Disliked The slope of the hard standing pitches nearest the road were a challenge to level unit.

Liked Friendly staff, clean site, toilets was kept as clean as the staff could do with the amount of people there. Showers were hot but sometimes had to wait, not enough showers for the size of the facilities but was good. Noise was kept to a minimum though the pitches was quite close to eachother and sometimes kids playing with footballs bit close the the caravans.

Disliked Everything was ok and catered for nothing I disliked really, very good facility.

Liked Lovely area and very clean facilities and great little park with beautiful surrounding areas.

Disliked Its not so much a dislike its just a comment, it would have been ideal if there was a little shop on site as a single parent with young children who had spilt the milk it was then a little bit of an effort to get them both in the car to travel to the nearest shop it would make a parent travelling alone with childrens life a little easier. Very active bird gathering of an evening in the local tree quite loud squawking until sundown didnt bother me for one night but may do for longer.

Local attractions

As well as being your nearest source of food, Tywyn’s a great little seaside town with a sandy beach, miniature golf, pitch and putt and tennis courts. It’s also the starting point for the Talyllyn Railway, which runs into the countryside for a scenic ride – a particularly nice way to do it is to ride to Dolgoch and walk to its waterfall before a cuppa in the tea rooms. Walkers may like to set out on the Wales Coast Path or head inland for a wander along the shores of Tal-y-llyn lake (15 minutes’ drive), scramble up the slopes of Penygader (20 minutes) or head to the walking hub of Dolgellau (half an hour) to explore the trails around there. Mountain bikers, meanwhile, will no doubt want to tackle the trails of Coed-y-Brenin (45 minutes) while birdwatchers learn about the residents of Dyfi Osprey Project (half an hour). Once you’ve spent some time on the sands of Tywyn, head a little further along the coast to explore the dunes of Ynyslas Nature Reserve and see the petrified forest at Borth (both 45 minutes).
