The river dysynni bordering the site

  • Relaxed family-run working farm in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park
  • Excellent area for hillwalking; two seaside resorts within 10 miles
  • Bordered by a river; 55 minutes' walk away from a pub in Abergynolwyn
Rock up to this place for a stay among stunning Welsh countryside: the site is set in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park and lies 15 minutes' drive from the seaside resort of Tywyn on the Cardigan Bay coast. Spectacularly located under the site’s namesake of Craig yr Aderyn or Bird Rock, and with splendid views of the surrounding Cadair Idris massif and open countryside, Bird Rock Campsite is a quiet and relaxed family-run working farm, spaciously laid out over four grassy acres. As this site is scenically set in national parkland, there’s plenty of handsome countryside to roam around, as well as waymarked walking trails to tramp on. The accommodation field is bordered by a little river that guests can idle beside, wade in and cast a rod into. There's no wifi or mobile phone signal here either… all the better for soaking up the peace and quiet… The site is consistently hailed by previous guests as being kept immaculately clean, and the owners are often lauded for their friendly and accommodating approach. For freshening up before or after your days of sightseeing and outdoorsy action, showers are available to use for a small fee, and a kettle and a washing machine are available over in the washing-up area for making hot drinks and sorting grubby togs. Also on site are Elsan waste points and electric hook-ups. If you need to keep supplies topped up for evening campfires, the nearest supermarket is around six miles away in Tywyn. Plenty of good local pubs serving food are around too; the nearest is 55 minutes' walk away (or under 10 minutes' drive away) in Abergynolwyn.

  • A charge of £0.50 applies for the use of the shower.

What customers say

This picturesque, tranquil campsite is praised for its stunning valley views, peaceful atmosphere, and welcoming, helpful staff. Guests enjoyed the proximity to a river for swimming, excellent local walks, and spacious pitches. Facilities are described as basic but clean and adequate. While some found the ground hard for pitching tents and the facilities dated, the overall experience is highly recommended, with many visitors planning to return.

Electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked We wanted somewhere quiet and picturesque. This site certainly fitted the bill. The site owner Rhian could not have been more helpful and obliging. We had three tents to pitch in our family party and she gave us oceans of room. The facilities on site are adequate and kept clean. 50p for a shower and not once did I use the full 50pence worth of hot water. There’s even a shower ant toilet to cater for the, like me, disabled. My family and I certainly had a wonderful 10 day stay. Tywyn is only a short drive away, 15/20 minutes. The town has ample shopping facilities including a fair sized Co-op. Thank you Rhian for looking after us. You approach the site via narrow lanes, but then that’s typical of the more picturesque areas of Wales. Well done Rhian, we will be back to see you again soon.

Disliked Not much to dislike really.

Liked That’s the best spot I ever been. Beautiful views, nice and quiet. Lots of paths for nice walks. Big choice of places around for walks as well. I definite will back there soon.

Disliked The place where we built up tent had very hard ground so it was challenging to secure tent correctly

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Fantastic views right down the valley.
Quiet whilst we were there, although looks like it could be busier when all the seasonal touring van owners are around.
Great starting point for outdoor adventures in all directions

Disliked Facilities feel pretty dated. Decorating works were being completed on the Mens facilities whilst we were there, which is needed, but generally is starting to show its age.
Have to pay for hot water to wash up and shower, but the water is heated by solar thermal...
WiFi did not reach to the bottom end of the site where we were, and no phone signal....

Local attractions

The site’s spectacular Snowdonia National Park setting among the Cadair Idris massif means that scenic hill walks are on the menu, as well as cycling and mountain biking around Cregennan Lakes or along the Mawddach Trail. For sitting back and admiring Welsh seaside scenes, take the coastal line of the Talyllyn Railway from the seaside resort of Tywyn, six miles from base, to Shrewsbury or in the other direction to Porthmadog. If you’d rather stay put on the sands or try your hand at surfing, Tywyn's beach and waves are much recommended. For varied days off base, the subterranean slate cavern zipwiring park at Blaenau Ffestiniog is well worth the hour’s drive to, or closer to home there’s a laser shooting centre in Tywyn. An alternative (and rather more sedate) option is the Centre for Alternative Technology in Corris, where visitors can learn all about how to live a more sustainable life.
