  • Small Llyn Peninsula site less than five minutes' walk from the coast

  • Direct access to a sandy beach, the coast path and seaside cycle path
They certainly deliver on what they promise in their name at Sŵn y Don Caravan Park… and in case your Welsh lingo isn’t up to much, what this Gwynedd site promises is ‘the sound of the wave’. Indeed, there’s no missing the call of the sea here, because this peaceful park is right by the Llŷn Peninsula coast, less than five minutes’ walk from the coast path and a sandy beach. Also just down by the beach is a bike path for pedalling along to Pwllheli or Porthmadog; if you’d rather drive, they’re about 10 minutes and 15 minutes away respectively. And if you’re pottering about by public transport, hail a bus from the stop five minutes’ stroll away. This is a mighty chilled-out spot, with space for dogs and kids to scamper about and for guests to gather around barbecues. That it’s a fine place to relax of an evening will be particularly excellent news for folk planning to pack their schedules with activities and attractions – there are stacks of things to do in this part of the world, both on the peninsula and back on the mainland, so get set for days of beaches, castles and Snowdonia strolls… and, if you’re feeling brave, a screaming ride along the world’s longest zipwire… No doubt such travels will result in a bit of a build-up of sand and/or mud about your person, so it’s pleasing to note that you can hose that all off at the site’s smart shower block, which has an accessible wetroom and underfloor heating to ensure happy feet.

Local attractions

Once you’ve sat on the sandy beach and strolled on the Wales Coast Path, it’s worth paying a visit to Pwllheli (10 minutes’ drive), where you can board boats for fishing days or sea-life safaris (or just lounge on another fab beach if you prefer…) For a bit more water-based activity, get along to Glasfryn Parc (10 minutes), for wakeboarding sessions or to keep dry with go-karting and Segway rides. Heading back to the mainland, you’ll hit the Snowdonia National Park with a drive of 20 minutes or so – head up here for hikes, mountain bike trails, Snowdon climbs and somewhat less strenuous scenic rides on the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway from Porthmadog (15 minutes). Intrigued by that world-beating zipline? It’s 50 minutes away at Penrhyn Quarry; slightly shorter versions can be found at Zip World Slate Caverns (35 minutes), along with an underground trampoline park. While on the mainland, seek out the swish Italianate village of Portmeirion (25 minutes) and the castles at Criccieth (10 minutes) and Harlech (35 minutes).
