General

  • Family-run campsite in Gwynedd
  • In a quiet village four to six miles' drive from the beach
  • Amenities block with three showers and three toilets

Centrally located on the Llŷn Peninsula is a likely location to be remotely and peacefully set for a Welsh countryside stay, which is what's offer at small and family-run Criw Touring Caravan and Camp Site, in the quiet village of Bryncroes and a short drive from miles of several safe and sandy beaches.

Country walks, horse trekking, sailing, fishing, climbing, cycling and more are all easily accessed in the countryside all around, and Snowdonia National Park is within about an hour's drive. If you're more of a seaside sort, Criw is six miles from Aberdaron and ten 10 from Pwllheli.

The site has an amenities block with three showers and three toilets; a fresh water supply; dishwashing facilities and a chemical disposal point. Satellite TV and free wifi are available, but please note that because of the site's peacefully remote location, the wifi signal is limited and you should bring a receiver for your TV if you want to use it.

Criw is about 20 minutes' walk via a quiet country lane from its local village of Sarn, where you#ll find a couple of decent pubs (one serving food), a post office/garage, a restaurant/tearoom, and the village shop to sort supplies to bring back for the barbie.

Everything we needed was there: toilets, showers, hot and cold water, a place to wash up. Very friendly manager, beautiful countryside, and no WiFi. Hurray!

    Disliked:

    It rained a lot.

From the manager...

Your comment is a breath of fresh air. So unlike the last review, where those sad people go around campsites taking photos of toilets. How low can people get. Many thanks for your kindness. And it's still blinking raining. Hope to see you again. All the best.

    Budget price

    Disliked:

That large rowdy groups are accepted
Loud music played all day and late into night
Swearing in vicinity of young children
Location- backs onto a housing estate
Toilets reflect price but still not very nice
Dog mess which wasn't removed all weekend
No staff around to greet or advise, only came to collect money
Phoned owner for help but never answered
Owner knew rowdy group was there but kept away from site in evenings
Burnt out rubbish dump next to tent pitches dangerous for children

From the manager...

I couldn't agree with you more. It's an absolute disgrace. Should close the place down. Keep well clear. It's a CAMPSITE. for goodness sake. where people of all ages come and ENJOY themselves. If you want better, PAY FOR IT. Get a life.

I liked the friendly approach of the owner... We had a party of 9 3 adults 6 children. They let us have a fire pit. We were pretty left to our own devices. The place was clean and served its purpose. We had a great time x x

Local attractions

The main town on the peninsula, Pwllheli, is about 20 scenic minutes away by car and comes with beaut sandy beaches, a leisure centre, marina, cinema, supermarkets, bus depot and a railway station, as well as an 18-hole golf course and the means to arrange both fishing and boating.

Fishing, boating and a golf course of the same size are at neighbouring Abersoch too, also within a short drive. It's a popular place with younger holidaymakers, who come for jetskiing, powerboat racing, wakeboarding and other watersports; the famed Wakestock Festival is held here annually.

This is also spectacular hiking land, so ditch the car for a day and have a go at the Llŷn Coastal Path stretch from Pwllheli to Abersoch in one direction and Pwllheli to Criccieth – and then on to Porthmadog – in the other.

Must see

  • Criccieth Castle (17.4 miles)
  • Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) (21.6 miles)
  • Ffestiniog Railway (21.7 miles)
