  • Family-run park between the mountains and the sea
  • In Snowdonia National Park, five miles from Harlech
  • Pitches over 12 acres, with 28 acres of woodland and fields to wander
Bored with being boxed in on a campsite? Space, space and more space is the order of the day at Snowdonia's Barcdy Touring Caravan and Camping Park: it's in a secluded and sheltered vale where you'll have 12 acres' worth of camping area to pitch up in, and then another 28 acres of oak woodland and open fields to wander around and spot the wildlife. Barcdy is a select (and very friendly) family-run park where the owners have seen generations of small and excited campers go free range among these natural surroundings (there's a play area and wifi on site too, but it's likely the sprogs will prefer to roam). The grounds are a wildlife haven where nature spotters of all sizes can see badgers, owls and migratory birds, and loads more walks can be had in the hills leading off from the site. There's a good collection of pitches among the 12 acres and amenities are kept in tiptop condition with access to plenty of showers and loos, dishwashing sinks and a launderette. Shaver points and hairdryers are available too. Barcdy doesn't have a shop as it prefers to support local businesses: the nearest places for supplies are Harlech four miles away with food shops and newsagent, and Porthmadog five miles away with supermarkets and several smaller shops.

What customers say

This is an exceptionally well-maintained and friendly campsite, highly praised for its cleanliness, spacious pitches, and excellent facilities including modern toilets and showers. Guests consistently highlight the beautiful views, peaceful atmosphere, and family-friendly nature of the site, with a great playground for children. Its prime location offers easy access to popular attractions like Portmeirion and Harlech. While Wi-Fi and phone signal can be inconsistent, the overall positive experience makes it a highly recommended choice for a return visit.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lots of places to camp up, with nearly every spot having access to a picnic bench which is nice. Showers and toilets clean. Had an extra room for washing up and a washer and dryer and plugs to charge phone or power bank with which was nice.

Disliked The road coming out is quite hard to see traffic coming.
One hand dryer in toilets not very strong.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The views were amazing.
The pitches were flat and well spaced.
It was a very good centre from which to visit a lot of interesting venues.

Disliked Parking .
We and at least 2 of our fellow caravaners/motorhomers chose to park on our pitches in a way that allowed us access to the services.
After erecting our awning we were instructed to turn our caravan around as it had to face the same way as the one other on site.
This faux pas could have been averted if we had been instructed on which way to park when we booked in.
Once turned around we had to try and match our pipework to the pitch layout to access the grey water disposal.
It took 7 metres of pipework!
The water in the handbasins in the shower block was cold and the hand drier useless.
Would we stay here again.
Probably not.
There are plenty of other sites in the area and I hope to find a better managed one next time.

From the manager: Hi Mr Bryant. We are dissapointed you wouldnt stay with us again. When you site your caravan on a pitch, it is sited on a hardstanding with a small piece of grass that you can use for relaxing outside, if you turn your caravan to have 2 doors facing you then have to share that small relaxing area with with your neighbour, that may be fine with you but your neighbour may not be to happy.
the caravans are sited in such a way to maximise the beautiful view over the estuary and to give a bit of privacy outide of your caravan.
Clear instructions are given on arrival as to how to pitch your caravan and help offered if needed, you chose to ignore this and when it was noticed you were the wrong way, the staff offered assistance to help you turn your van.
I have checked the hot water in the shower room and it is fine, it runs off the same boiler as the rest of the taps. The hand drier also works.
You came to the reception on several occasions to purchase different things but failed to mention any problems. We do find that some people choose to get "revenge by review" if they are asked to do something they didnt want to do.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked A spotless site. Tent pitches are very spacious and staff very friendly. The childrens play area is enough to keep younger children happy. Toliets and showers are very clean. We would definately return to this site again if camping in this area. Porthmaddog very close for supermarkets but car needed.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good facilities, sensible layout of the camping pitches and generous space for each, the team were helpful but also laid back. The site was well generally maintained and fairly smart.

There were multiple drinking water taps along the camping field which were also convenient. Amenities slightly better than some others I've been with washing machines, driers, hair driers and a coffee machine. Some essential supplies were also available from the tiny reception.

Would definitely come back again - in fact already planning to.

Disliked Didn't really dislike anything - though I'd caution that there must be around 100 pitches here and if they were full I think wash block would prove rather too small. However, wasn't busy when I was there so it was no issue.

From the manager: Hi Sian. We do not usually reply to reviews but would like to explain.
We do not offer a fridge as we are a site with 90 units, Improper storage or handling of food in a communal fridge can lead to the transfer of bacteria from one item to another. My advice is to bring a cooler box with freezer blocks, we do offer a freezer to refreeze your blocks and borrow some of our blocks while your own are freezing.

BBQ's are allowed however they must be at lease 10 inches off the ground to prevent scorching of the grass, disposable BBQ's do not meet this criteria and have in the past caused fires in the recycling area, this information is available on PitchUP prior to booking.

Had you have checked in on arrival instead of going straight to a pitch the code for the toilets would have been explained along with a welcome letter with all the information you require.

Local attractions

Coastline, castles, caverns, museums, steam railways, sailing, horse riding and hiking are all nearby, as is fishing at the two Tecwyn lakes within walking distance and sea fishing for mackerel and bass from Llandanwg Beach. For wanderers, the local walks accessible straight from site can take you roaming around Welsh woodlands with wondrous views of the Llŷn Peninsula in one direction and Snowdon in the other. If you're spending the day at Llandanwg, have a walk too across the causeway at low tide to Shell Island, where over two hundred different types of shell including oyster, whelk and cockle are washed up each winter; go from January to June for the best bags. Delve into days at Harlech, Porthmadog and Barmouth too, all popular pulls on the north Wales coastal trail. Harlech has a beaut beach backed by sand dunes, the famed Royal St David's Golf Club and the even more famed Harlech Castle, scene of the longest siege in Welsh history during the Wars of the Roses. (Wales is of course castle country, so get to Cricieth, Caernarfon and Conwy as well.) At Porthmadog, it'll quickly become apparent that these parts are also steam railway country: the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway and the Ffestiniog Railway, the oldest narrow-gauge railway journey in the world, both start in Porthmadog and the Welsh Highland Railway finishes here. Barmouth, the seaside town with another beaut beach, adjoining estuary and the Mawddach Trail, is about 13 miles to the south. Also within easy reach, you should count on a day out at decidedly individual Italianate village Portmeirion, the National Slate Museum at Llanberis or Llechwedd Slate Caverns, three more popular north Welsh pulls (take another puffy trip on the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis up to Snowdon's summit). You could also up the ante with activity day out at Glasfryn Parc and Greenwood Forest Park, visit King Arthur’s Labyrinth (underground boat trips!) or the Centre for Alternative Technology, both near Machynlleth.
