General

  • Peaceful site five minutes' walk from Fairbourne on the Gwynedd coast
  • Half an hour's drive from Barmouth beach, bridge and estuary
  • Bala White Water Centre and Penygader trails within 45 minutes' drive

Dolphin pods, dragon's teeth and secret lakes where the river meets the sea... come and join the folk at Ynys Faig Farm, five minutes' amble from Fairborne and half an hour's drive from the beach at Barmouth.

Small sorts will probably excitedly ask about the dragon's teeth first: these are on the sands at Fairborne and are tank traps laid out in World War II to thwart enemy invasion. You'll find a friendlier welcome these days, with two dog-walking areas at either end of the beach and a fine spread of pubs, eats and shops in town.

Kids will likely be chuffed at the thought of a vintage train ride too, so take them on the narrow-gauge railway from Fairborne up to Penryhn Point, a spit of sand and shingle where the Mawddach estuary flows into the Irish Sea. From there, catch the ferry from there over to Barmouth for walks over the estuary bridge and the chance to spot dolphins in the waters below.

This peaceful place on the Gwynedd coast is regularly hailed by visitors for its friendly vibe and scenically hilly backdrop, as well as its modern amenities of toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area. There aren't many rules: dogs are welcome, barbecues are fine and you can hire firepits and buy wood for outdoor feasting.

Location was good for us, it was peaceful and a very laidback atmosphere on the site. The owner was around to check the site. There was a pub and shop within a few minutes walk.

    Disliked:

It was very dark at night with little lighting in the toilets and none on the site. The toilets did not seem to be cleaned daily.

We liked the friendliness of the campsite managers/owners. They were on hand from the start to help us out as this was our first time camping as a family

    Disliked:

The big cobwebs in the ladies toilets above the showers (only because I have arachnophobia) otherwise the toilet facilities were very clean

Lovely quiet campsite close to the beach, with plenty of amenities close by. A warm and friendly welcome is always offered by the owners, Stuart and Theresa, and there is very much a feeling of being welcomed into the family. Nothing is ever too much trouble!
Pitches are well spread out and a good size, separated into ‘enclosures’ of approximately six. Huge hot showers, always spotless and space for washing up. Dogs are welcome.
It’s easy to explore the local area by train, cycle (plenty of dedicated paths) or walking, and there are amazing views over the estuary from Blue Lake and Cregennan Lakes, or, for those that are brave, the summit of Cader Idris. There’s a traditional steam railway that takes visitors out to the point, where you can explore the dunes or take the passenger ferry into Barmouth.
A fabulous place, and definitely recommended!

Local attractions

Barmouth half an hour's drive away is more than the mouth of a river, of course: the beach is a hit with families and standup paddleboarders and the harbour's handy for boat trips out to see the seal colonies and dolphin pods.

If you're chasing bigger thrills on water, make a beeline for the National White Water Centre 40 minutes away at Bala, where kayakers and rafters zoom down the dam-fed river towards Lake Bala. A 50-minute drive away, Zip World Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog give you the white-knuckle experience at height, flying through former slate quarries.

For a quieter experience, drive for under five minutes to the paths to Blue Lake, where a hidden tunnel leads into a former slate quarry surrounded by high cliffs; the mineral-rich waters are a remarkable colour matched only by the coastal views from the top. (The rocks around the lake can be slippy so unless you're a medal-winning wild swimmer, maybe save your breaststroke for the beach.)

If you want to spend more time on the coastline, head 20 minutes to Dolgellau for the Mawddach Trail, nine miles of nature-filled peace along a former railway line, landing handily back in Barmouth for a paddle and an ice cream (or a chicken tikka at the town's tandoori).

For heights, wilderness and true solitude, paths up Penygader mountain start 45 minutes' drive away.
