Quarry 2 non-electric grass tent pitch (four person, medium)

Liked: The views were gorgeous. Most pitches we could see had the same chance of a view as you’re on the side of a hill. Toilets/wetrooms were great and single occupancy allowed for privacy. Hot water and the pressure was brilliant (no tokens/coins required) after walking the mountains or the walk over the bridge into beautiful Barmouth. Didn’t try WiFi as 4g and phone reception was better than at home.

Disliked: Having to select ‘middle-aged couple’ for the ‘travelling as’ option

The Oaks 1 electric optional grass tent pitch (eight person, XL)

Liked: Amazing views....lots to do.... brilliant for walking. Nice and quiet and only a stones throw away from the beach and Barmouth.

Disliked: Coming home......not really an issue but could not connect to the free wi-fi as we would of like to connect to the radio.

Quarry 6 non-electric grass tent pitch (five person, medium)

Liked: Own plots/space. Loads toilets/showers. We camped with a dog and 16 month old, went better than had imagined despite the thunderstorm on first night.

Disliked: One group let their dog wander around off the lead, ended up using our dogs poop bags when it went toilet (not fault of the campsite though) overall would stay again!

Bryn 5 electric optional grass tent pitch (ten person, XXL)

Liked: The views were beautiful absolutely stunning scenery. Pitch a good size.

Disliked: The bathrooms were not very clean we had to go out and buy flipflops to shower in. Also they did not appear to be cleaned very often. Washing machine and tumble dryer were not very clean and the washing smelled afterwards. The tumble dryer did not dry the clothes in any way effectively spent £12 trying to dry clothes and they were still very wet we ended up rigging up a washing line in the tent.

Mawddach View camping pod

Liked: Pod 1 was lovely fantastic view and everything we needed. The blinds were fantastic blocking out the sun and the fridge was a bonus. The toilets were always clean and well supplied. Staff were always available and very helpful. The Equestrian centre was friendly and the beach walk was lovely. Lots of food options nearby.

Quarry 2 non-electric grass tent pitch (four person, medium)

Liked: Location was outstanding, with exceptional views over the estuary. Can be very quiet. Friendly owners. Good pitches. Great if you want a bit more of a wild camping experience.

Disliked: We had a very noisy few days as young scouts and D of E people turned up, quite noisy and could not park by my pitch due to inconsiderate people. Multiple tents in a lot of pitches and were running around different pitches. I think that the owners should accommodate big groups like this on a separate area, away from people who want peace and quiet, as it was for the majority of the week. I did hear a few people having to speak to the scouts. The toilet block was quite good but needs a bit more attention to detail, no squeegees to clean the floors after a shower, some of the showers/ toilets were in need of a few repairs. You could see that the owners were building while we were there, and had to wait a few times for vehicles to have to move, it is a small road to get up in parts.

Local attractions

The Blue Flag sands at Fairbourne, which can be reached via the estuary path, stretch for more than two miles. There’s safe swimming for families here, plus oodles of rock pools at low tide, and a variety of watersports. Guests can also hop aboard the miniature steam railway here for the short trip to Penrhyn Point, where a dinky passenger ferry runs to the seaside resort of Barmouth. Walkers should be delighted with the range of rambles in reach: perhaps a day clambering up Cadair Idris or exploring the Cregennan Lakes, a bimble to Barmouth featuring a bridge, a bog and a boat, an evening’s meander to the nearby waterfalls at Arthog and Friog, or a wildlife-spotting wander down a former railway line with views of the estuary. Two-wheelers can get going along the Mawddach Trail which runs from the site – where you can cycle for eight miles alongside the edge of the estuary, stopping for a picnic as you go – or the stonking Coed-y-Brenin mountain bike paths. Other nearby tourist attractions include the surreal Italianate village of Portmeirion, underground adventures at King Arthur’s Labyrinth, treetop fun at Go Ape, the Corris Craft Centre, the Talyllyn steam railway and the Centre of Alternative Technology, which has interactive exhibits on renewable energy, organic gardening and the like.
