Golden hour on site
Lledr valley vistas

  • Peaceful Snowdonia site bordered by woodland and a river
  • A 20-minute drive from Capel Curig and half an hour from Conwy
  • Set on a 42-acre sheep farm; campfires allowed and logs sold on site
Hoping for some holidays close to the high Welsh peaks? Tan Aeldroch Farm is a sprawling Welsh sheep farm with green Gwynedd views right across Snowdonia National Park. This 42-acre site has a wild feel to it, although the grounds are always well maintained (courtesy of the flocks of live-in lawnmowers that you'll be sharing with). Bordered by the river Lledr on one side and woodland on the other, the farm has plenty of secluded spots, trees to climb and rocks to clamber over. Handily, though, it's within a couple of hundred yards of the A470, opening up many options for off-site jaunts (including trips to the sea, about half an hour's drive away). The farm's eco-conscious owners have been working to restore the natural balance of this part of the valley since 2003 – help them up by making sure that you leave no trace when settling down here. The facilities at Tan Aeldroch Farm are basic, but you can count on flushing loos and a standpipe. Getting chilly in the evening? Make your own heat by setting up a fire in one of the designated firepits (please bring your own wood). To keep things as peaceful as possible, don't use radios or stereos if hanging by at the pitches, ta. The nearest bar and food shop are in Dolwyddelan, a couple of villages down the main road (five minutes' drive). You can also catch a train here if arriving without a car and book a taxi to the site. The owners are present at the site during weekends, but may not be available midweek.

What customers say

This is a beautiful, tranquil campsite located beside a river, offering a 'back to basics' experience with plenty of space to choose your pitch. Guests praise the stunning scenery, friendly owners, and the option of campfires. While the site is generally well-maintained and clean, some reviewers noted the lack of washing-up facilities and occasional issues with midges and muddy ground, particularly after rain. Showers are currently under construction.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Very peaceful beautiful basic site with a lovely river running through and plenty of space. 25 minute drive to snowdon and fire wood on sale on site.

Disliked Lots of midges in the summer. Was overbearing at times but no fault of course of the campsite. Firelogs could be drier or bags to have kindling in as very hard to light quickly. Could do with a washing up station.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Half an hour's drive from Conwy. Quiet site. Cheap. Scenic river

Disliked - No potwash facilities despite many requests by reviewers for one.
- 2 standpipes were indicated elsewhere on the site to be drinking water, but the standpipes were not labelled and one was not secure. No drainage or soakaway at one. Notices in toilets to say water at those sinks was not drinking water.
- Campsite seemed to have 2 different (English) names. Need to decide which to use and renew the very tatty signage accordingly
- Toilets - 2 steps within the individual stalls. Sit on toilet with only space for your heels on the floor in front. Sloping painted floor in rest of building which was permanently wet from hosing down or rain. Overall an accident waiting to happen.
- Site is in a valley between 2 woods, with a river going through one side. There was a view of Snowdon, but certainly not
"views across Snowdonia' as claimed in site info
- Holes burnt all over the field as the provided fire pits were metal rings that did not clear the ground
- Vicious midges active all evening and night due to situation of the site.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Beautiful secluded and peaceful setting. If you love nature, you will love it here - we spotted woodpeckers, swallows, sparrows, robins and chaffinches. Listening to the river at night was bliss! My children spent many happy hours climbing on the rocks and playing in the trees. The owners of the site were lovely and helpful.

Disliked The midges! Come prepared - they are relentless. (I like nature but not when it's eating me.)
There was a noisy group of young people on the second night who trashed the toilets which was a bit annoying as I thought big groups were not allowed.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Absolutely beautiful setting. Beautiful scenery, gorgeous river, wild swimming, fantastic walks, nice people. Good recycling bins.

Disliked Bit too basic…Could do with a few more facilities like washing up sink, Soap in all hand basins, not running out of loo roll, a few more toilets and showers, duck boards in showers, more hooks, more seating in showers and toilets.
It can be very midgey….need to be prepared for that but didn’t see that info anywhere.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Great location, very close to Betws-y-coed and the perfect base for exploring the nearby roads and mountains. The pitches are unallocated, so you can pick your own spot (there are some along the river and plenty others in the fields) and you can park right beside your pitch. Toilets and showers are in a little barn, very rustic, but clean and well-maintained. It was lovely to see sheep and lambs wander through from time to time, it really did feel like camping on a farm. There are fire pits dotted around the fields and you can buy bags of wood to burn. Friendly staff on reception gave recommendations for things to do in the area, including a great food recommendation in Betws-y-coed: Hangin' Pizzeria (best pizzas we've had in years!)

Disliked - Nowhere dedicated (yet) to wash dishes and pots.
- Do bring midge/mosquito repellent! We ended up leaving a day early unfortunately because we came unprepared and were eaten alive by midges on the first night.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked -Picturesque field, pitch up where you like (no uniform pitches marked out) excellent if you can pitch up next to the stream.
-Walks from the campsite.
-Good location near tourist spots (we went to snowdon in 30 mins and betws-y-coed in 5mins)
-Fire pits available for use.
-New shower block is good

Disliked Not much,
-It was a bit busy when we were there (half term week) but no noisy neighbours so all good.
-I think its been mentioned before but a pot washing area would be useful
-No or very little signal (but that might be what you want)

Local attractions

Coming here to conquer Snowdon? Pen-Y-Pass car park is about half an hour's drive if you're ascending on foot, while the Llanberis station where you can pick up the Snowdon Mountain Railway is also well within range (35 minutes). Make sure to pack sensible clothing if heading out for a hike – any shorts and t-shirts you've brought along can be put to good use on the beach at Llandudno or Colwyn Bay (both 35 minutes). Up for a trip on the longest zipline this side of the equator? Then make for Zip World Fforest (10 minutes' drive), where there's also a kilometre-long rollercoaster that twists downhill through the trees. More adrenaline-fuelled action is to be had at Capel Curig (20 minutes), a peaceful mountain village that's home to the Plas-y-Brenin National Outdoor Centre. Something more sedate? Steer clear of hair-raising Snowdonia activities and instead head for gentler walks at Bodnant Garden (25 minutes) or Conwy Castle (30 minutes).
