Stopover electric optional hardstanding campervan pitch (no awning)

Liked: We were in a van, Views across the estuary lovely, panoramic views from pitches 1 and 2, I wish I had known! site and facilities very clean, easy to collect envelope with pitch number, access to the Mawddach trail, Cregennen lakes, very good website with lots of information, lots to do in the area. Camping area was looking extremely good and better views, we didn’t see Sarah or John but I would imagine you wouldn’t have any problems speaking to them or contacting them with any problems

Disliked: Pitches for vans close to the road, so noise at commuter times but quite over night, middle of June 2023

From the manager: Thanks very much for your recommendation. We'd love to welcome you back to one of the panorama view pitches which are very popular and only available to book via our own web site.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass campervan pitch

Liked: Absolutely nothing.

Disliked: Was allocated to pitch 6 which was situated right above a very busy main road. Only stayed on this site for a total of one hour and had to leave because of the road noise. This site was advertised as being nice and peaceful, when In fact was the total opposite, also the site had a very cramped and clostrophobic feel to it. The patch of grass next to pitch 6 was a bare patch of mud so any chance of sitting outside our campervan was zero. I would not recommend this site or use again.

From the manager: Stayed less than an hour and made no attempt to discuss concerns with us? What a shame… Instead of the “Small Van pitch” these campers booked for one night through Pitch Up, we could have upgraded them to one of our Panorama Pitches with expansive estuary views, which had a rare night available. These Panorama view pitches are usually fully booked direct by our regulars and are further from the road for van campers who are more noise sensitive. We could also have reassured this camper that the rural road is not noisy most of the day or at all during the night. Although if this camper arrived on a Sunday when some bikers were going past they might not have realised this in the few minutes they stayed. We could have pointed out the grassy seating area less than 50 metres from the pitch with one of the best views in Wales which everyone can use. Also the way through our 40 acres of peaceful meadows for tent camping to picnic benches and the Mawddach Trail. We realise that our site is not everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s so much more than first meets the eye.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass campervan pitch

Liked: Had a lovely one night stay, views were beautiful and loved walking to the estuary from the site.

Disliked: Not a dislike as such as there's not much as you can do about the road but can be noisy on the hardstanding pitches

Route directions

For larger caravans and motorhomes, don't follow a sat nav, but follow these instructions instead. Approach from Dolgellau, turning off the A470 Dolgellau bypass at the junction signposted Tywyn/Fairbourne onto the A493. It is exactly 4.5 miles from the junction, on the brow of a slight hill on the right-hand side. Keep your eyes open for the sign, as the left turn from the Fairbourne direction can be difficult. By bike or foot: There is direct access to the site from Mawddach Trail. Use the signposted stile from the Trail about a mile east of Morfa Mawddach station, just after the large, concrete tank traps, or about tthree miles west of the George III pub. Walk about 600 metres up hill through a field, past a house then across another field and up a steep track through woods. Reception is at the furthest double glass doors on the side of the building nearest the road. By train: Morfa Mawddach station is 1 mile away with direct access along the Mawddach Trail. The Graig Wen team can arrange pick-up (including mountain bikes) or drop off at the station: please give them a call a couple of days before arrival using the contact details provided in your booking confirmation. By bus: Buses run between Aberystwyth/Machynlleth and Dolgellau (no. 28): ask the driver to drop you at Graig Wen between Penmaenpool and Arthog.

Local attractions

There’s sno lack of things to do in Snowdonia National Park as well as walking, cycling and mountain biking: scale the summit at Snowdon to the visitor centre for ideas (or take the steam train if you’re out of puff). Wildlife watching is all around too: have a squint at the RSPB reserve between Arthog and Friog, or take a trip into Coed-y-Brenin after mountain biking to get a glimpse of otters, deer, badgers and foxes. Beach horse riding is available within minutes of Graig Wen, and fishing and watersports at the beaches of Barmouth and Fairbourne: Barmouth Harbour is a popular spot to hire a boat for sea fishing trips, while Fairbourne is famed for its windsurfing and surfing. Start off at Fairbourne, as its Fairbourne Steam Railway puffs gently along from here to Penrhyn Point, where the passenger ferry leaves for Barmouth. Harlech, Portmeiron and the Centre for Alternative Technology at Machynlleth are all about 45 minutes’ drive away.
