General

  • Glamping on the edge of Snowdonia National Park
  • Deep in green countryside but 10 minutes' drive from Caernarfon
  • Camp kitchen, bike storage, solar showers and firepits included

Plonk yourself down in a choice spot between the mountains and the sea at Cae’r Boncath Glamping, on the edge of Snowdonia National Park and a 15-minute drive from the coast. Part of a smallholding among peaceful and green countryside, it's a sheltered spot in a wildlife haven – it's named after the buzzards that nest in the adjacent bluebell wood and over 50 species of bird have been spied (so far) in the surrounds, so don't forget to bring your binoculars if you're into such things.

Although it's deep in countryside for relaxing stays, Cae'r Boncath is a mere 10-minute drive from Caernarfon and has easy access to plenty of attractions and activities for those who want to take things up a notch. This is a popular area for walkers, climbers and riders, with footpaths, quiet roads and bridleways leading through scenic countryside and on up into the mountains. The site has secure bike storage, along with shelter and turnout for horses if needed.

Glamping tents have access to compost toilets, solar outdoor showers (available in high season), camp kitchens with gas cooker, and firepits for nights under the stars (logs are sold on site).

When available, free-range eggs and free-range pork (think sausages, bacon, chops, belly etc), vegetables and fruit can be bought from the site owners. Freshly baked bread can be ordered for the mornings (is there a better smell to tempt you out of bed?) and there are also plenty of pubs and restaurants nearby if you’d rather leave the cooking to someone else.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

We stayed in the shepherds hut, which was absolutely immaculate. This eco-friendly experience really allows you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and scenery. which includes a lush green pitch, stunning star filled sky at night (if it’s clear) and a really peaceful atmosphere. A very respectful owner who provides great facilities. a lovely kitchen area for you to use, supplied with all the cooking equipment you could think of. Very clean eco toilet/shower facilities (we found it smelling nicer than any public toilet, even nicer than our toilet block at work).
The logs for the fire (included in the price) and a brilliant fire pit allowed us to sit outside till late and it felt so private. In the hut, solar power is used for the lights and a charging point for phones which also had a radio. we found we only needed one light on (there’s 3) and it was lovely and bright, we took our own wires to charge phones and as it had two usb ports this was ideal. you may need a torch at night for the loo as there is no light pollution so it is dark, but only a stones throw from the hut.
we found shops just a short drive away, and even a gluten-free chippy for when we was feeling too lazy to cook.
We went to hike up snowdon and would recommend this site for anyone wanting to do that, as it just added to the experience. We would love to stay here again, a rare find and for the price, a real bargain

we had car trouble getting here and the owner was very understanding , we ended up with a much later arrival time but we were still warmly welcomed - thank you for a lovely stay.

for people obsessed with being connected there is no wifi but we did get a 4g signal whilst on the site - not that we used it

The hosts were super helpful and were very understanding about arrival times and e-cig charging. Always happy and helpful. The tent was super cosy and the kitchen had everything to cook a variety of meals, even toast! The out door shower was lush and the fire pit was relaxing. Couldn’t have asked for a more romantic or relaxed glancing experience.

Worms and slugs (I know I’m a wimp)

The only thing I would say is add a tea towel for the washing up :)

The tent is in a lovely secluded location and the space well set out. The kitchen is really handy with most things that you will need. Wood and kindling was provided. Toilet was good and didn't smell. Mattresses were comfortable and tent was adequate. Was lovely sitting by the fire pit at night. Great location, close to lots of lovely places to visit.

    Disliked:

Had a text before arriving reminding us that no bedding is provided for the single beds which was not made clear to us beforehand. I replied that I would have to go and buy sleeping bags as we didn't a have any and he said that he could provide us with some. We were very disappointed to see that we didn't have a bell tent and instead had a normal tent. Also there was no bed or wood burner as advertised, just mattresses. We had booked this as we wanted the experience of glamping in a bell tent and this was just pre set-up camping. On our last day, we had no water coming out of the tap or shower. We didn't tell him this as we were soon leaving but it was still frustrating. Would have expected a partial refund, as £130 for 2 nights in a normal tent is expensive. Also, would have appreciated knowing this before we arrived. Wouldn't have booked this site if we had known about the tent!

The owners were very lovely and welcoming. We stayed in the Shepherds hut, which was beautiful! It was a lovely place to stay as the area was very peaceful. The toilet and shower were not far. We had everything we needed and everything was well maintained and clean. Would definitely stay here again in the future!

    Disliked:

Everything was great except on the day we were leaving the shower was not working and unfortunately no one was around to help! We were unable to use the water facilities as there must have been something wrong with the pressure. We could not get in contact with anyone despite calling and knocking on the door. Everything else was great and its not a big deal however it would have been nice to shower!

Local attractions

This is a great base for exploring Snowdonia National Park – and there are plenty of ways to do so. The lakes, rivers and coastline make watersports and fishing a fine choice. If you prefer dry land, Snowdonia is renowned for its walking and climbing, and guests can walk onto Cefn Du, Moel Eilio and onto the Snowdon Massif straight from the site. The local road and path network have safe cycle and horse riding routes too if you want to mix it up a bit.

About five minutes away is the Welsh Highland Railway station at Waunfawr, where historic steam engines await you... and a more relaxed way to take in your surroundings, with a buffet service and fully licensed bar to boot.

Caernarfon’s many attractions are also easily reached – 10 minutes' drive will get you to Caernarfon Castle or to an indoor climbing centre and indoor karting centre – handy if you want to blow off steam come rain or shine. There’s also a vineyard and orchard in Caernarfon where you can treat yourself to a glass of cider or wine (or two…) in a gorgeous setting.
