  • Family-owned site a 10-minute drive from Bala
  • Bala Lake five minutes’ drive; National White Water Centre 15 minutes
  • Fishing in the River Dee; good stargazing area
On the eastern fringes of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), Ty Tandderwen Caravan Park is a family-run site where there’s nothing but grazing land and wooded hills all around, plus mountains in the distance. The only sounds are birdsong and the gentle rippling of the River Dee, which runs just a couple of fields away. By the way, remember to pack your rod, for both fly-fishing and angling are allowed here. Dogs are welcome too, and they might wag their tails in delight when you take them to Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid; five minutes’ drive), where they might join you on a swim or on your paddleboard exploration of the shore, or walk by your side as you stroll along forested trails, making regular stops to take in views of the water. Other hikes might lead you to the forest at Aberhirnant (10 minutes), Rhiwagor Waterfall (half an hour), or to viewpoints like Moel y Garnedd (15 minutes) and Cwm Cynfal (half an hour). Back on site, fire up the barbecue, having sourced your provisions in Bala town (10 minutes), where there are also several restaurants. Wherever you eat (on site or in town), set aside a good hour or so before bed for a spot of stargazing – Eryri is an International Dark Sky Reserve, and you should be in for a starry treat on a clear night.

Liked Absolutely BRILLIANT stay at Tytandderwen Caravan Park. Facilities are fantastic, the toilets were clean, hot showers (I've seen some Karen's moaning that theres nowhere for your things, there's hooks on the doors inside the shower & benches outside...?!), plenty of sinks & cubicles for getting washed & dressed. The shop is well stocked with essentials, beyond food too, & there is a decent coffee machine in reception (£2.50 per coffee, you can use your own cups too if you wish). There's a little free library in the old telephone box, which is a fab extra touch! The owner is AMAZING, friendly, chatty & runs a tight ship with no nonsense for rule breakers, but not in an overbearing way. The pitches themselves are sizeable, but its not overcrowded which was great. Play area for kids, nearby fields for stretching legs (human & furry), the river is a couple fields away, & the scenery is stunning. There are facilities for laundry, dishwashing, chemical toilet emptying & fresh water points, plus large recycling bins too. Can't fault the site at all, & will definitely rebook! Very reasonable prices, free WiFi to please the teens, absolutely 100% recommend. Thank you 😊

Lovely, clean and quiet! Lots of near by space for our dogs and kids to play!

Disliked Only issue was the ground. Struggled to get pegs for tents in as was stoney! Ended up with a few bent pegs!

Liked Good location and friendly staff. Facilities also good. Overall, a handy base to explore Snowdonia. I saw some reviews mentioning having to walk to the nearest town but, for the price, this place is ideal. Good showers and everywhere is clean.

Disliked The field was very hard and bare. This isn’t the owner’s fault as it’s been so dry and I believe they invested in landscaping the field earlier in the year.

Liked The campsite was immaculate, the showers and toilets were spotless. We loved the Alpacas and small park to keep the children entertained. We took a little walk to the river each evening which was a five minute wonder. The campsite is well situated for Bala lake and the surrounding areas are beautiful. We would definitely recommend the site and will be returning.

Local attractions

The National White Water Centre (15 minutes’ drive) is the place for high-octane aquatic adventures on the River Tryweryn – from guided rafting excursions and canyoning, to extreme independent sessions (for experienced rafters only). The industrial heritage of North Wales comes alive at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes) with guided tours of the former mines, where you can also have a subterranean round of miniature golf. If you’re after the sweet kick of adrenaline, there are also thrilling rides like the Titan zipline, which will have you flying above the area’s distinctive slate landscape. It’s a much gentler vibe at Betws-y-Coed (45 minutes), a pretty village stretching between the rivers Conwy and Llugwy, with pretty woodland walks (including the family-friendly Tan Dinas Path) leading to stone bridges and waterfalls like Rhaeadr Ewynnol / Swallow Falls.
