Firepit overlooking the estuary and the village of Borth

General

  • Small peaceful site on the Dyfi estuary, seven miles from Machynlleth
  • A 10-minute drive from the beach at Aberdyfi
  • Riverside firepits, with wood available to buy on site

Evenings spent by the water’s edge, cosied up round the firepit and watching the sun set over the river? Simply blissful, and a regular happening for those who make their way to Smugglers Cove Boatyard, a properly peaceful place down on the Dyfi estuary three miles from Aberdyfi and seven from Machynlleth.

The views by day from here are pretty special too, looking out over the river towards Ynys-Hir RSPB reserve and Borth Bog National Nature Reserve. When the tide’s out a little beach appears for paddling; when the water’s higher it’s possible to swim or launch canoes or boats from the slipway (bring them along to use the boatyard’s storage facilities if you wish).

Adding to the chilled vibe is the lack of cars down by the river’s edge – it’s around a 100-metre walk from the parking area to your digs, a small price to pay to be rewarded with such stunning views (and easily negotiated with the help of a wheelbarrow to transport your kit).

If you can tear yourself away from gazing out over the water, there’s plenty of wholesome activity to be had nearby, including boating, beaches and birdwatching.

Please note

Group bookings of 5 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

It was fun using the wheel barrow to cart our camping equipment to the pitch and thank you for providing them.
It was also a bonus having the toilet and washing facilities, should they have been needed.
    We will definitely becoming back.

The pitch was a good size, although it was just me and my husband we have a large tent as we like to have the extra space and it was no issue fitting it on. The fire pit was a lovely addition and meant we could keep warm while cooking as it was very cold but that’s what you get when you camp at the end of October!

The toilets and shower were fine. They are a short walk away but that wasn’t an issue and they were clean.

Best of all was the views and the peace and quiet . We were the only people on site and it was blissful. I was worried prior to going as i had seen some reviews mention the trains and the road but there is hardly any noise from them.

    Disliked:

The only negative thing I can think of is the amount of stones/rocks in the ground made it difficult when putting our tent pegs in but we managed in the end.

From the manager...

Hi Charlotte,

You were the last campers of the year and it's great to hear that you had such a lovely time.

Thanks for sharing your photos, you certainly a couple of lovely clear days!

Sorry to hear hat you struggled with the rocks, we are continuously adding turf but it is very much a slate bed and winter storms mean that it is a continuous battle. Many people tie their guy ropes to large slabs, which can be very effective but it sounds like perseverance won in the end!

We look forward to welcoming you back next year.

All the best

Boat Boy John: Location was fantastic, estuary tide high tide just a few meters away. Unobstructed views of estuary, birds and trains. Really fun.
Well looked after by site owner. Well thought out and cared for toilets and shower (on campsite).
    Boat well maintained.
We were able to swim and SUP from boatyard, but this needs knowledge of tides, safety equipment and proper planning. Aware of strong currents (we had spring tides)

    Disliked:

Just two of us so we were fine, a larger group may struggle for cutlery, but I'm sure this would be provided if asked for.

From the manager...

Hi guys,

Many thanks for staying with us, writing a review and posting photos. October can provide some of the best sunsets, with dramatic cloudscapes adding to the drama!

Thank you for re-iterating the necessity to be careful in/on the water. Aberdyfi is notorious for it's currents and the boatyard is no different - but with careful planning and respect of mother nature it can be the most rewarding and fulfilling thing you ever do.

Throughout the season we do inevitably lose cutlery, glasses and crockery to the elements and occasional accident but replenish every year, as you say, we would have provided more if asked.

We hope you come back and stay with us again soon.

Thanks again for the review.

Hi Anonymous,

Many thanks for your visit and for taking the time to provide feedback.

We do plan to increase the toilet numbers with compost toilets, the first arrives next month!

By the toilet block there is a number of leaflets and posters with things that are going on and walks to enjoy.

Soon there will also be an information map. We do try and improve year on year by re investing all profits, hopefully you will come back again and see how things have developed.

Quirky accomodations on a boat with an old rustic charme21/08/2019

I stayed in the boat on site and it has a very rustic charme with all the necessary amenities right there within reach (though there was no nighttime lighting of the dark path leading from the boat to the washroom). The people on site were friendly and welcoming though I would have liked to have been given a bit more information upon arrival (regarding facilities like toilets or showers, available services like firewood, a bit of a 'how to use the stove/fireplace/..', closest restaurants or shops for dinner/food etc.). That said, I found everything on my own by simply exploring though I didn't dare use the stove burners due to unfamiliarity with them.

It was a lot of fun, bunking out in an old boat, and the atmosphere of the ocean rushing against the shore during the nighttime nor the sight of the sun rising over the water cannot be beat.

The 'check-out' time was very conveniently placed for a late time (12.30) so that I could take my time getting up in the morning and was able to have a lie-in while enjoying the view from my 'window'.

    Disliked:

    Already mentioned above:
    - lack of lighting on the path to the washroom facilities
    - bit of a taciturn welcome when I arrived

In addition (but this is truly a nitpicky addition!), I was sad to see that the boat was not actually in the water, secured by a mooring line as was suggested in the printout booking statement I had received. I would have loved the motion of the waves in addition to the sound of them :)

From the manager...

Hi Silke,

Thank you for staying with us and for your review. We are improving the lighting on site but we are also proud of the Dark Sky Status achieved in Snowdonia and do not want to compromise this position for our visitors....so we are installing down lighters along the path....but it is quite a fine line to tread...so to speak! We are also awaiting an interesting addition for The Boy John which will remove the need for a night time toilet trek....there has been a delay in the manufacture but the wait should be worth it!

We do try an make it clear that it is an old boat that comes with a few quirky little nuances and hope that visitors take time to read these reviews which is why I always make the time and effort to respond to you all so that guests get an understanding of what they are booking before they arrive.

Our on-site partner can be a little grumpy....especially as he often has to sift through rubbish that people refuse to recycle ....after what could have been a very long drive back from Scotland on the M6 due to his seasonal line of work...but he's lovely really!

Glad you like the late checkout and we do want people to leave relaxed. Unfortunately there is not a 'beached boat' or 'boatel' option on Pitch Up so I opted for the second most appropriate choice, which is a mooring...maybe they will see this and add it! Thanks again for your review and we hope that you will return to see how the site develops.

Kind regards

Ben

Take the A493 from Machynlleth for about six miles. After a sharp right and then a left-hand turn the entrance to Smuggler's Cove is on the left. Park by the entrance and walk to the right of the curved building (noting your allocated pitch on the noticeboard), heading along a footpath to the right of the compound and shed (wooden fence) then under the railway line. The Boy John is immediately on your right and the pitches along a footpath past the boats on the left.

Local attractions

Bring your binoculars if you’re into birdwatching, for there’s much twitching activity nearby – geese and wading birds fish just by the site, and there are nesting ospreys along the river at the Dyfi Osprey Project. More spotting, along with super views towards Snowdonia, can be had from Ynys-Hir RSPB reserve (home to the BBC's Springwatch programme for several seasons), which is around a 20-minute drive away.

If it’s beaches you seek, your nearest is the wide sandy stretch in Aberdyfi, 10 minutes away – also a good spot for a round of golf, a bit of fishing or watersports including sailing, canoeing and kitesurfing.

For a bit of town time, head into Machynlleth, 10 minutes’ drive away, for independent shops, a leisure centre and concerts or exhibitions at the MOMA Machynlleth performing arts centre. Cultured types might also like to pay a visit to the renovated 1920s Magic Lantern Cinema 15 minutes away in Tywyn.

  • MOMA Wales - Y Tabernacl (5.5 miles)
