General

  • Small, peaceful site on the Dyfi estuary, three miles from Machynlleth
  • 10 minutes' drive from the beach at Aberdyfi
  • Riverside firepits, with wood available to buy on site

Evenings spent by the water’s edge, cosied up round the firepit and watching the sun set over the river? Simply blissful, and a regular treat for those who make their way to Smugglers Cove Boatyard, a properly peaceful place down on the Dyfi estuary three miles from Aberdyfi and Machynlleth.

The views by day from here are pretty special too, looking out over the river towards Ynys-Hir RSPB reserve and Borth Bog National Nature Reserve. When the tide’s out a little beach appears for paddling; when the water’s higher it’s possible to swim or launch canoes or boats from the slipway (bring them along to use the boatyard’s storage facilities if you wish).

Adding to the chilled vibe is the lack of cars down by the river’s edge – it’s around a 100-metre walk from the parking area to your digs, a small price to pay to be rewarded with such stunning views (and easily negotiated with the help of a wheelbarrow to transport your kit).

If you can tear yourself away from gazing out over the water, there’s plenty of wholesome activity to be had nearby, including boating, beaches and birdwatching.

We absolutely loved it here. We stayed in the Boy John.
It is a bit like camping in a large wooden shed (although it is a real boat!) in that it is damp, drafty and dusty, but that is too be expected.
The double bed is very comfortable and lovely and warm. There is a wood burner. A small equipped kitchen, with running (cold water) and a fridge. There is enough of everything to cook a decent meal.
There is plenty of seating and a small table inside and a seating area outside around a fire pit. In the car park there is a small basic shower/toilet block with two toilets, running cold water and 1 shower which was lovely and warm. The shower room is big enough to fit a family in if you are travelling with younger family members.
You couldn't be any closer to the water if you were floating on it and the views are incredible.
We'll definitely be back. I want to stay in the boat again but fancy the camping pitches too!

The setting is perfection. It's a beautiful estuary location where you can't stop watching the tides changing. Take your binoculars to watch the seabirds. The facilities were basic but you really don't care when the pitch itself is so lovely. We missed the view when we left.

From the manager...

Hi Lucy,
Thank you very much for visiting us and for your review, feedback your comments, we are reinvesting any profit back into the site to try and improve the facilities year on year. Often we get severe storm damage (as we just have with 'Emma') and so this year we have to repair the sea/river defences and replace turf on the pitches. These storms and tides also wash up lots of flotsam and jetsam....plus the fact that we are a busy working boatyard....often effects the cleanliness...so apologies for that. We look forward to welcoming you again this year!

Directions

Take the A493 from Machynlleth for about six miles. After a sharp right and then a left-hand turn the entrance to Smuggler's Cove is on the left. Parking by the entrance, then walk under the railway to the side of the estuary where you will find the boatyard – someone should be around to welcome you.

Local attractions

Bring your binoculars if you’re into birdwatching, for there’s much twitching activity nearby – geese and wading birds fish just by the site, and there are nesting ospreys along the river at the Dyfi Osprey Project. More spotting, along with super views towards Snowdonia, can be had from Ynys-Hir RSPB reserve (home to the BBC's Springwatch programme for several seasons), which is around a 20-minute drive away.

If it’s beaches you seek, your nearest is the wide sandy stretch in Aberdyfi, 10 minutes away – also a good spot for a round of golf, a bit of fishing or watersports including sailing, canoeing and kitesurfing.

For a bit of town time, head into Machynlleth, 10 minutes’ drive away, for independent shops, a leisure centre and concerts or exhibitions at the MOMA Machynlleth performing arts centre. Cultured types might also like to pay a visit to the renovated 1920s Magic Lantern Cinema 15 minutes away in Tywyn.
