General

  • Small peaceful site on the Dyfi estuary, seven miles from Machynlleth
  • A 10-minute drive from the beach at Aberdyfi
  • Riverside firepits, with wood available to buy on site

Evenings spent by the water’s edge, cosied up round the firepit and watching the sun set over the river? Simply blissful, and a regular happening for those who make their way to Smugglers Cove Boatyard, a properly peaceful place down on the Dyfi estuary three miles from Aberdyfi and seven from Machynlleth.

The views by day from here are pretty special too, looking out over the river towards Ynys-Hir RSPB reserve and Borth Bog National Nature Reserve. When the tide’s out a little beach appears for paddling; when the water’s higher it’s possible to swim or launch canoes or boats from the slipway (bring them along to use the boatyard’s storage facilities if you wish).

Adding to the chilled vibe is the lack of cars down by the river’s edge – it’s around a 100-metre walk from the parking area to your digs, a small price to pay to be rewarded with such stunning views (and easily negotiated with the help of a wheelbarrow to transport your kit).

If you can tear yourself away from gazing out over the water, there’s plenty of wholesome activity to be had nearby, including boating, beaches and birdwatching

    How unique it was

    Disliked:

Luckily we only paid 50£ a night for this place I'm rate it 2 star for that reason but wouldn't spend more then that a night here for a large or small group it's in a lovely remote place with a wonderful view it's a shame about the small things that all mount up firstly we didn't have that welcome in when coming aboard. The dishes looks greasy, the floors are dirty we spent the first 30minutes cleaning up so we could enjoy our stay, there was dog foul outside the boat which my partner stood in but because of the poor lighting outside, I'm aware it says on the website about bringing own bedding but the bedding that was on already looked filthy like it hadn't been washed before our visit, there was also a sworm of flies the second night in the roof so we couldnt enjoy sleeping up there. There is no number or contact info to call or contact a member of staff to tell them problems how ever if these little things got sorted out we would consider coming again and maybe reviewing

From the manager...

Hi Young Couple,

I believe that yours was a very last minute booking which meant that were unable to provide the usual service, which we did explain, so apologies for that. We are a dog friendly site and ask that owners that bring dogs but clear up after them, in this instance it was done and we had to do a lot of clearing up, so again apologies as this one must have been missed.

Lovely scenery 03/11/2018

We stayed in The Boy John for 2 nights. The scenery was beautiful as was the sunsets. The boat is very quirky with everything you need for a couple of nights.

    Disliked:

The flies. There were lots of them. I was expecting spiders but not the amount of flies we had. We couldn’t sleep in the bedrooms because there were that many buzzing around. It must be the time of year as no one else has commented on them. I would like to go again but may be put off in case we had them again.

From the manager...

Hi Dawn,

Sorry to hear that you had a fly problem, I will investigate immediately to see if there is a source or a reason for them. As you say, its not something that's been an issue in the past....maybe something to do with the unusually hot summer....although no one else has said anything so maybe that and the time of year for some reason. We hope you will try us again and I will be in touch with any explanation I discover. Thanks, Ben.

Amazing location/views, camping right next to the Estuary. We really enjoyed being able to have a fire pit too.

It’s different, staying at a boat yard, than a normal camp site. It made it a bit more of a unique holiday. The facilities were a couple of minutes walk from the pitch, (though the walk is bumpy, so do be careful!)

Best views at a site I’ve stayed at before, by far.

    Disliked:

Bit of noise from the nearby rail line, but nothing in the night, and the trains are infrequent. So it wasn’t a big bother at all.

From the manager...

Hi friends,

Thanks for the photos and review.

It is indeed unlike staying at a normal camp site and this is something that we strive to be....a little bit different! It is also a fantastic spot for bird watchers who, with the help of a decent lens can get an amazing view across to the bird reserve. So glad that you had a lovely time and we look forward to welcoming you back!

Lovely site with clean, easy access facilities and good size pitches 12/10/2018

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Amy M. Mobile phone icon Confirmed

  • Liked:

Pretty much everything. The boatyard was gorgeous the views were amazing. Very closed off very private pitches. The tent pitch was a great size the place was very well signed and made the pitches very easy to find in the light. There were facilities to shower and use the toilet. There was drinking water available. The road wasn't too noisy and easily accessible. The campsite it's self was easy to find on maps. The dogs absolutely has a whale of a time. The village up the road was gorgeous the people were nice and friendly and the drive wasn't bad although you couldn't walk. I would definitely go back and defiantly recommend to a friend.

    Disliked:

The only thing I could say that I disliked would be that the walkway to the pitches wasn't lit up. At night time especially when the tide was in and high it's quite hard to get to the toilet or car park.
This wasn't necessarily a dislike this but throughout the stay I didn't come into contact with a single member of staff. Or maybe i did and they didnt introdice themselves. It would have been nice to have been seen someone at some point. Especially since it means anyone can walk in off the street and go visit your tent of they'd like.

From the manager...

Hi guys,

Thanks for the photo and comments, so glad that you enjoyed your stay. We are looking at different lighting solutions as we would ideally like to have them run on solar but this brings its own issues in regard to the safe location of the batteries and the location of the solar modules on a site which can take quite a pounding during the winter months.

It is likely that you did see a member of staff if you were there during the week but we are also mindful that some people like to keep themselves to themselves. The entire site is covered by CCTV so quite secure. We look forward to welcoming you back. Thanks, Ben.

Great views, peaceful, good location, wildlife, have own fire pit

    Disliked:

Shower could be better, a lot of slate, no welcome and could not find the office, very muddy pitch

From the manager...

Hi guys,
Thanks for the feedback and photo. There is indeed a lot of slate around, the region is well known for it and many campers use the larger slabs as ballast to tie guy-ropes to if they cannot push their pegs in far enough. This summer due to the extreme heat we unfortunately lost our grass quite early on, we are therefore adding additional soil and turf so that the pitches get better and better. Hopefully see you again next year. Ben

Such a cosy little boat with lots of character and amazing views. 28/09/2018

This was such an adventure! The boat had so much character and I really felt it had been lovingly restored by someone. So much to look at inside, not to mention the fantastic views out over the estuary, especially from the loft. Just wow!
It's very peaceful, although my partner found the nearby boat's rigging annoyingly clangy, as well as seagulls on the boats roof :-D.

So many amazing birds. Do take good binoculars and you won't be disappointed!

The water pretty much comes right up to the boat so it's easy to con yourself that you're sailing!

It was really cosy and romantic.

Really clean loos and shower back at the campsite base too which was nice.

    Disliked:

It was hard with a fearless 2 year old! Sleeping arrangements were a bit hard because my partner was relegated to the loft on his own whilst I slept in the double with our toddler. Not enough room for 3 in the bed but we couldn't put the boy in the loft because there was a steep drop off the side. Not the owners fault though, we knew what it would be like before we booked!

The Boy John itself is fantastic but there's lots of cobwebs and spiders so not suitable for any arachnophobics!

From the manager...

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the comments and photos, really good for other potential guests to get an idea of the place. I'm glad that you had such a lovely time and I guess it was you guys that left the lovely note, so thanks for that...much appreciated. It's definitely the time of year for spiders to seek shelter as the males go looking for mates (normally indoors!). We hope to welcome you here again soon, perhaps during the summer months when you would then be able to see the Ospreys hunting fish on the estuary before they migrate south. Ben

Great little space. Even though the weather was terrible, the log stove kept the living space warm. Great view from the 'bridge'. Kitchen space clean and ready. Really enjoyed the stay. Worth taking about 1 bag of 'fuel station' size log bags per day minimum to stay warm on bad weather days. Nice owner, and helped with only issue mentioned in Disliked section. Overall, great experience. Would stay again.

    Disliked:

Miss communication led to no bed change before arrival. Not able to contact on number provided. Out of hours mobile could be useful. Did manage to make contact the next morning and they apologised and changed bed straight away. Thank you for that.

From the manager...

Hi guys,

Thank you for your comments and suggestions and apologies for the mix up with the bedding. Glad you enjoyed your stay and sorry the weather wasn't better for you.....hopefully next time! We hope that you come and stay with us again soon.

The location was magical, loved every thing about it, nature at its finest, we had bbqs on the beach and fire pits at night! Yes its rustic, but so well thought out, Geoff has done a fab job, no wifi, no tv, no radio, just the sound of the waves on the foreshore, and chance to make your own entertainment. We played cards, dominoes, read books, and even had a tinkle on the piano! We are completely stress free, can't wait to return.

Directions

Take the A493 from Machynlleth for about six miles. After a sharp right and then a left-hand turn the entrance to Smuggler's Cove is on the left. Park by the entrance and walk to the right of the curved building (noting your allocated pitch on the noticeboard), heading along a footpath to the right of the compound and shed (wooden fence) then under the railway line. The Boy John is immediately on your right and the camping along a footpath past the boats on the left.

Local attractions

Bring your binoculars if you’re into birdwatching, for there’s much twitching activity nearby – geese and wading birds fish just by the site, and there are nesting ospreys along the river at the Dyfi Osprey Project. More spotting, along with super views towards Snowdonia, can be had from Ynys-Hir RSPB reserve (home to the BBC's Springwatch programme for several seasons), which is around a 20-minute drive away.

If it’s beaches you seek, your nearest is the wide sandy stretch in Aberdyfi, 10 minutes away – also a good spot for a round of golf, a bit of fishing or watersports including sailing, canoeing and kitesurfing.

For a bit of town time, head into Machynlleth, 10 minutes’ drive away, for independent shops, a leisure centre and concerts or exhibitions at the MOMA Machynlleth performing arts centre. Cultured types might also like to pay a visit to the renovated 1920s Magic Lantern Cinema 15 minutes away in Tywyn.

Must see

  • Rheilffordd Talyllyn Railway (5.2 miles)
  • MOMA Wales - Y Tabernacl (5.5 miles)
