  • Bell tents in a wildflower meadow with views across the Dee Estuary
  • A 15-minute drive to the Wales Coast Path; 30 minutes to Talacre beach
  • Communal firepit and a 47-acre wood; burger bar five minutes' walk
If you’re keen to explore north Wales, but would rather stay at a campsite that’s not too far off the beaten track, Halkyn Castle Wood is one solution to your conundrum. The pitches are set on the edge of the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and yet are only minutes from Junction 33 of the main A55 and within an hour of Manchester and Liverpool. Here you can stay in bell tents pitched on a wildflower meadow edging 47 acres of private woodland – which you are welcome to wander – and every day you can enjoy wonderful views across farmland to the Dee Estuary. As this site has a wild-camping vibe, the bell tents have no electricity but the 4G signal is good – and the connection to wildlife (you may see red kites circling above) even better. A substantial shower block is a few minutes’ walk away (across a stream) and there is a communal firepit exclusively for bell-tent guests. And you’re on a dark-skies site here, so remember to pack a torch for nocturnal forays. The owners are on hand to discuss day-trip ideas and are more than happy to arrange activities for you on site (an extra cost), including foraging walks, mindfulness, guided walks and even some storytelling. There’s a burger stop at the road services (five minutes’ walk), and Halkyn (five minutes’ drive) is the nearest village, with a choice of pubs; one is good for food and the other for real ales, ciders and a pool table.

Local attractions

The handy location near Junction 33 of the A55 means you can head off on a big-city adventure: Chester (25 minutes’ drive) has ancient walls to stroll around and is packed with indie shops and buzzy bars in half-timbered buildings. Llangollen (40 minutes) is a quieter option, with brooding castle ruins, a fab location on the Dee river and a cluster of waterside pubs. If days out in fresh air are more your thing, then Snowdonia (55 minutes) will see you on challenging walking routes, or closer to base camp, there are glorious sea views along the Wales Coast Path (15 minutes). Talacre beach (30 minutes) offers rolling sand dunes, ideal for family picnics and run-around games of tag, while there are plenty of beach options on the Isle of Anglesey (an hour) too. Still outdoors, add a bit of history into the mix with a nose around Moel y Gaer Iron Age settlement (10 minutes), and check out the medieval ruins at Greenfield Valley Heritage Park (15 minutes).

Bell tent

Liked: Tent was clean, spacious and had all the essentials. Easy to find site, plenty of room, pleasant hosts. Good access to A55. Facilities older but functional.

Disliked: Nothing. The road noise doesn't really diminish much overnight but it may bother some.

Bell tent

Liked: The yurts were in a lovley secluded part of the site, the Woodlands were great after the paint ballers had finished. Loved the communal fire pit too.

Disliked: The main part that you drive through was a bit unkempt but the people were lovley.
