Stamford Way Fisheries and Camping: View over fishing pond.

General

  • Well-maintained Flintshire countryside caravan park near Ewloe
  • A five-minute drive to Gladstone’s Library; Chester 15 minutes
  • Well-stocked carp ponds for anglers, plus fishing shop and bistro

Up for the sort of fishing holiday where you can spend many, many hours by the waterside? You'll fit right in at Stamford Way Fisheries and Camping, a fishing hotspot in quiet north Wales countryside near Ewloe, and with easy access off the A55. This is a place where anglers of all ages and abilities have the chance to try their luck on two pools from dawn until dusk.

Campers get discounted rates for fishing, so what’s on offer? The carefully tended Twin Oak coarse fishing pools, well-stocked with carp and with numerous fishing pegs (including a wheelchair-friendly peg) available every day. This is a great base for fishing families, as kids can learn new skills just a short way from their caravan pitch, while experts can get stuck into competitive match fishing and festivals throughout the year. Left some kit at home? A small shop on site sells bait, pellets and rods.

And what of the pitch facilities? There's a small number of pitches for tourers, with electric hook-ups, a spotless shower block and local information in reception. And as far as catering goes, you can spark up the barbecue for alfresco feasts or abandon cooking altogether and head for the on-site bistro, open daily during the open season. Teas, coffees, soft drinks and alcohol are all on offer, as well as freshly prepared food taking you from breakfast to supper.

If you need to stock up, head to Ewloe (five minutes’ drive), with supermarkets, post office and a petrol station, plus a pub and takeaways if you fancy venturing out of an evening.

Beautiful site. Spotless facilities and the owner couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating. It was so peaceful, all you could hear at night were the owls.

    Disliked:

Due to the high rain the pitches were so soggy but due to how quiet it was the owner let us stay on the gravel road which was no problem for us but it could probably do with gravel piches or at least some.

From the manager...

was great to see you weekend so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us , hard standing was refused at the planning enstage its something ill be working on with the council in the future as we were given permission to open all yr yet we must to close in winter due to the wet ground hopefully we over turn the decision to reject hard standing , thank you for positive review

Small site - very well maintained. Friendly staff. Used as a stopover. Given a lovely pitch. Not a Angler – but the site had 2 fish ponds which seem to be well occupied. Lovely local walks. When we head over that way again we will be looking at stopping again.

This is a small but immaculate site offering well maintained all electric pitches and an on-site bistro (great breakfast). The staff were lovely and manager James was visible all day checking that the site was up to standard. The fisheries were a lovely backdrop and really added to a relaxing bank holiday break.

Great location - close to Chester and short drive to North Wales. Even though it was close to main road, we couldn’t hear any traffic.

The host was super friendly and helpful.

Toilet and shower facilities were clean and modern. Could do with a sweeping mop for showers.

Pitch was spacious - newly planted hedges will will create some privacy in time

Good size grass pitches and immaculate facilities.
James the owner is great, enjoyed listening to his story of how he’s got the business going - was genuinely pleased for him as the site was full for the first time at bank holiday weekend, he’s done an excellent job.
Site has a great licensed cafe serving breakfast and lunch and ice creams, was very popular.
Site is close to local shops for essentials and well situated to travel further afield.
The fishing is great, lakes are well stocked and my other half caught regularly over the three days we stayed, as did the other anglers.
Access was good and located just off A road so no narrow lanes to negotiate with the caravan.
    Will definitely return here.

Local attractions

Looking for a dose of culture on your fishing break? Try the romantic ruins of 13th-century Ewloe Castle (10 minutes’ walk), with fantastic rural views from its parapet. Hilltop Hawarden Old Castle (10 minutes’ drive) played an important role in medieval border skirmishes and is sometimes open on summer weekends. Also worth a peek is Gladstone’s Library (five minutes), neo-Gothic reading rooms founded in 1898 and set in formal gardens.

Cultured Chester (15 minutes) is a walled Roman city packed with history museums, galleries, shops and traditional half-timbered pubs. You can also take a boat trip down the River Dee and visit Chester Zoo, or hit Chester Racecourse (both 15 minutes) for horse racing and international polo matches in summer.

Kids in tow? Head to Wepre Park (five minutes) for wooded walks to waterfalls, a skate park and a cracking playground for younger offspring. Families can hike off excess energy in Loggerheads Country Park (15 minutes), with lots of opportunities for river paddling and picnicking with views of Moel Famau (25 minutes), a popular hiking destination and the highest summit in the Clwydian Range.
