  • Traditional adults-only shepherd’s huts overlooking Llangollen
  • A 15-minute walk into town; 10 minutes’ drive to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
  • Private hot tub for each hut, with views over the town
Whether it’s evenings watching the sunset over Llangollen or days hiking mountains, riding steam trains or scoping out castles, things are equal parts relaxing and exciting at Llangollen Shepherd’s Huts. What sort of break is this? Well, folk who visit this place will stay in a traditional shepherd’s hut with a hot tub overlooking Llangollen. Therefore, it’s safe to say that it’s a break with excellent views, plenty of relaxation and some spectacular sunsets for good measure. Each adults-only hut has its own parking space, making getting about easy, but Llangollen is also easy to get to on foot. If you like the look of the castle and the river below, simply stroll down there – the town is around 15 minutes’ walk away, and there are restaurants and pubs ready and waiting if you’re feeling somewhat peckish. There’s plenty to work up an appetite too, whether it’s hiking the local mountains or scoping out the UNESCO World Heritage site at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal 10 minutes’ drive away. When you return, clamber into your double bed or head straight to the shower room (which includes a toilet) to rinse off the day. If you really want to work up a sweat, you could challenge yourself to The Llangollen Round, a 33-mile total hike that works its way around the summits in the Vale of Llangollen.

Beulah shepherd's hut (hot tub)

Liked: This was a beautiful shepherds hut. My OH was worried that I’d booked us into a ‘shed’ for two nights. It was no shed! He loved it as much as I did. It was warm, spotlessly clean, and very comfortable. The little touches made it feel quite luxurious including flowers, chocolates and fizz on arrival. Views were stunning by day and by night. Greeted by the owner, Mike, on arrival and departure. I couldn’t say one negative thing about our stay. Would highly recommend. Perfect location to enjoy watersports in Llangollen.

Beulah shepherd's hut (hot tub)

Liked: Warmly welcomed by Mike and, I suspect his wife's, lovely homely touches. Fabulous location, overlooking the town and the Panorama Hills. The huts all face east towards Castell Dinas Brân and are very peaceful. The 10 minute walk to town is very pleasant along the river. Despite the hillside location, it's an easy walk back, possibly aided by the excellent beers served in town! We really enjoyed the private hot tub after our days out on the hills. Although we didn't use them, the log burner and barbecue were a thoughtful addition.

Disliked: There is no Wi-Fi in the huts but phone reception is excellent

Local attractions

Hiking boots laced up, what new pastures might you step onto? Vivod Mountain (10 minutes’ drive) in the gorgeous green Berwyns range might be your first call. Second might be World's End (20 minutes), a vale where the hiking and cycling trails have cliffs on either side – the Offa’s Dyke Path passes through here. A walk with a little waterfall scenery can be tracked down at Horseshoe Falls (five minutes), a weir on the river Dee. The Garth Mountain Panorama Walk (15 minutes) is a five-mile trail set to impress too, following part of the Offa’s Dyke Path again. Budding historians can touch down at a few local historical sites. The medieval Castell Dinas Brân (five minutes’ drive) and the 14th-century country house of Plas Newydd Historic House & Gardens Llangollen (five minutes) will kickstart that side of things. A taste of the steam train trips of old can be had at the Llangollen Railway Station (10 minutes) too. Don’t leave out the older options though… Chirk Castle (20 minutes) is a Grade I-listed 13th-century fortress and simply stunning.
