General

You’ll be more than abbey when you get here and have a butcher’s at the farm shop selling home-grown beef, pork and lamb, the cosy camping pods, and the cute tearoom that’ll serve you a full Monty, a delicious lunch or a naughty home-made cake...

Actually, there is an abbey here, and rather beautiful it is, too: the ancient ruins of Valle Crusis, which are a heritage attraction in their own right. Abbey Farm Caravan Park is snuggled among lush hills and crystalline streams, which makes for some pretty cool views all round.

Scenery lovely, beautiful walk into Llangollen along the canal.

    Disliked:

Very noisy with large families of children awake and running around until 4am. Endured two nights then decided to move on after the security barrier was rammed during the last night. This site needs supervision which is a shame.

We went here yesterday with a view to buying a static mobile home. We had made arrangements by phone of our time of arrival, our names etc.
When we arrived, at the time we said that we would, the girl in reception knew nothing about our coming but she would contact the owner to come and speak with us. We were given a cup of coffee in the cafe and then left sitting there.
Half an hour later we were still sat there on our own, nobody came to speak to us at all, so we got up and left.
A good way to treat prospective buyers but looking around a bit, the place looked very haphazard and scruffy so maybe we had a lucky escape.

    Disliked:

    The manners.

Local attractions

Abbey Farm is easily accessible from Liverpool and Manchester (both about an hour away), and from the West Midlands (Birmingham is an hour and a half’s drive from here).

A five minute meander leads either to the rushing River Dee, or to the calm splendour of the canal, where you can admire the horse-drawn narrowboats (you can board one of these boat trips in nearby Llangollen).

Llangollen is world famous for its Eisteddfod international music festival, but is a lovely place to visit anytime: there’s a steam railway and a museum as well as the heritage canal boats.

For mountain bikers and ramblers, Coed Llandegla Forest is well worth a trip. It’s a privately run site with miles of trails to suit all abilities, plus a visitor centre in a pretty log cabin among the trees, which houses a great café, bike hire, a cycling shop and a workshop for professional repairs.

Must see

  • Chester Castle (18.3 miles)
