  • Denbighshire working farm with ancient abbey ruins
  • Two miles from Llangollen; Llandegla Forest bike trails 15 mins' drive
  • Farm shop on site, plus bistro with bar and takeaway
Like to get a real taste of your surroundings when you’re on a break? You’ll certainly be able to do that when you stay at Abbey Farm Caravan Park, in the Denbighshire countryside a couple of miles from Llangollen. In fact, you’ll have two options for a good meal here. The first is to bring your barbecue along and stop in at the site’s farm shop for fresh meat to throw on the grill (and perhaps a milkshake or ice cream while you’re there…). The other is to book a table at the farm's bistro, open Thursday to Sunday for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, coffees and homemade cakes. It’s a pet-friendly place with indoor and outdoor seating, and has a takeaway menu too. With all that tasty food to try out, it's handy that this site is in an excellent spot for lots of outdoor activities – walks, mountain biking and canoeing are all close by, and there’s a good roster of heritage sites to visit, from the steam railway in Llangollen to the hilltop ruins of medieval Castell Dinas Brân. There’s heritage right here on site too – the ‘abbey’ of the farm’s name is in fact the ancient ruins of Valle Crusis, well worth a look while you're here. Other aspects of the site are rather more up-to-date – guests have access to a laundry room, washing-up area and chemical disposal point as well as bathrooms with toilets and showers. Abbey Farm is easily accessible from Liverpool and Manchester (both about an hour away), making it a great choice for an easy escape from city life.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The site is huge but seperated into smaller areas, staff were so lovely, toilet and shower facilities great, showers were hot and free. Pitches were all flat, and there's plenty of space even during the summer holidays. Beautiful scenery and the Abbey itself is gorgeous. Did t use the bistro but it looked great.

Disliked Some groups of teenagers out late meant a bit of noise after quiet time, and some folks came over to chat around 2am but quickly left when someone politely told them they were a bit loud. Nothing major at all. Pricier than other campsites I stayed at but with more facilities.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The setting of the site is beautiful with the Abbey at the centre and mountains all around. My little boy loved being able to paddle in the stream and we loved that we could walk to Llangollen or Horseshoe Falls along the canal in around half an hour. The bistro on site had friendly staff and serves and top notch breakfast, and the courtyard area behind that was a lovely place to relax for a bit in the evening with the kids.

Disliked Not really an idsue with the site itself, and a risk wherever you go, but on a few nights there were a couple of groups (only a couple) of our fellow campers were not resectful regarding noise levels, and did mean a few tired days (and an extremely tired and long drive home), but I do have to say that the wardens were visibly patrolling and intervening where they witnessed or were made aware of issues, and so did whatever they could to manage the situation.

A nice site. It’s a pity not all visitors respect the facilities.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked View of hills and abbey, nice walk into Llangollen.
Bistro for breakfast.
Flat pitches on small field.

Disliked Toilet blocks not clean. Toilet paper everywhere. Toilet paper stuffed down toilets making flushing difficult.
Shower trays and cubicle floors dirty.
Sinks dirty.
A lot of noise from people’s music systems.

Local attractions

A five minute meander leads either to the rushing River Dee, or to the calm splendour of the canal, where you can admire the horse-drawn narrowboats (you can board one of these boat trips in Llangollen, five minutes’ drive away). Llangollen is world famous for its Eisteddfod international music festival, but is a lovely place to visit anytime: as well as canal boat trips you can ride on the steam railway, walk to Horseshoe Falls or take a slightly steep walk to Castell Dinas Brân (10 minutes’ drive/50 minutes' walk from the farm). For mountain bikers and ramblers, Llandegla Forest (15 minutes) is well worth a trip. It’s a privately run site with miles of trails to suit all abilities, plus a visitor centre in a pretty log cabin among the trees, which houses a great café, bike hire, a cycling shop and a workshop for professional repairs. Gentler days out nearby might include trips to Plas Newydd Historic House & Gardens (five minutes, the 18-arched Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (15 minutes) or National Trust - Chirk Castle (25 minutes).
