  • Luxury couples’ hideaway on a mountainside smallholding in Conwy
  • Half an hour’s drive to Betws-y-Coed and Zip World Fforest
  • Exclusive use of glamping caravan; kitchen, shower and outside lounge
All the comfort of a refurbished touring caravan, truly spectacular views on a mountainside smallholding and close to all the adventure that North Wales offers. Does that sound like a winning formula? If so, Pen Y Banc is just the spot for you – this luxurious couples’ retreat is on the edge of Clocaenog Forest near the village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr in Conwy. The swish accommodation is in a thoughtfully converted tourer, now featuring a separate bedroom with a super-kingsize bed (all linen provided), plus a washroom and separate shower. You can spread out in the spacious living area, which has a comfy sofa, a TV for use as a DVD player (there’s no TV signal in this part of the mountains) and a selection of DVDs, games and books. Meals can be rustled up in the kitchen – cooker, fridge/freezer, kettle and toaster come as part of the deal, along with utensils – and there’a a basic welcome pack thrown in to get you started. This being north Wales, you’d be sensible to expect the odd chilly day – all taken care of with central heating in the caravan. Having invested in a significant solar power system, the accommodation is fully off-grid, excellent for those seeking an eco-friendly break. The lounge room has a spacious and cosy lounge with log burner, and it also doubles as alternative dining space and a lovely place to take in the view and relax. And when the sun shines once more, you can cosy up around the firepit for lazy lunches or fireside suppers and take a moment to enjoy those wonderful mountain views.

Liked: We had an amazing stay at Pen Y Banc. Right in the middle of Clocaenog Forest, it couldn't be more peaceful. Stunning views around the entire valley, it was truly breathtaking. The caravan has everything you could possibly need and the bed was extremely large and comfortable. Owners Ruth and Chris are absolutely lovely, and we can't forget pilot the adorable black lab. They brought us fresh produce from their amazing garden as well as baking us a lovely fresh loaf with home made jams upon our arrival. Perfect location if you want to explore Snowdonia national park or the North Wales coast. Can't say enough good things about this very special place. We will definitely be back. Thanks so much and good luck Ruth and Chris. You have something very special.

1 bedroom on-site touring caravan

Liked: Beautiful location very isolated and peaceful. Friendly and helpful hosts. Caravan very well restored, bed excellent large with dual mattress’s. Kitchen well appointed for self catering. Outside awning area with outstanding views, lots of walking available from the property, a bit steep to get down to the river but the site is new and still a work in progress. Very friendly but hungry dog Pilot, which was very amusing. Access is via a narrow road and forest track but not a problem. Home made ginger cake and jams were excellent and the fresh strawberry gift was great. Would highly recommend and well worth another visit.

1 bedroom on-site touring caravan

Liked: My husband and I were looking for a 7 night, peaceful retreat, after a couple of difficult years, with the Pandemic and some serious health issues, and boy, did we find that! Wow, what an amazing location! Pen Y Banc, is set within the Clocaenog Forest, not far from the beautiful Snowdonia National Park. The caravan, is fully equipped and spotlessly clean, enabling us to cook our own meals, which meant we could stay on site to eat if we wished, while saving money on takeaways and meals out. We go on holiday, a couple of times a year and have always struggled with lumpy, uncomfortable beds. However, the Queensize bed in the caravan, is the most comfortable bed, of all the places we have stayed over the years!!! The caravan, is set on a hill, with beautiful views, and surrounded by meadows. Such a lovely place to wake up to, with a coffee in hand, listening to the crickets and birds chirping, watching Buzzards and Red Kites, circling above. We were also excited to see, for the first time, a wild Common green Lizard, basking in the sunshine! Ruth and Chris were very friendly and helpful, while at the same time allowing us our privacy. Oh, and the scrummy homemade Blackberry wine and Ginger Cake were most welcome! Thank you Ruth and Chris, for giving us the opportunity, to stay in such an incredible and tranquil environment! We will be back next year! Alicia & Derek

Disliked: Not Applicable!

Nothing too much trouble for Ruth and Chris who are keen to make sure guests have a perfect stay. Homemade jams and blackberry wine a lovely surprise to find for us on arrival. Cannot wait until we can stay again.

Disliked: Nothing at all

Local attractions

You’re welcome to potter around the 22-acre smallholding comprising meadows, woodland, streams and ponds, which also has direct access to Clocaenog Forest, with miles of trails to explore on foot or by mountain bike. On your ramblings, there’s a chance of seeing buzzards, red kites and the occasional fox. Although in a peaceful mountainside location, you’re not totally remote. There’s a pub a mile away and a handy village shop in Cerrigydrudion (10 minutes’ drive). Proximity to the A5 (10 minutes) also means it’s a cinch getting to Bala (25 minutes) for kayaking on the lake, or Llyn Brenig (20 minutes) and Alwen reservoirs (both 20 minutes) for waterside walks, sailing and all manner of watersports. A little further afield are all the walking and biking trails around pretty Betws-y-Coed (half an hour), and if sandy beaches are beckoning, Criccieth, Llandudno and the Isle of Anglesey are all roughly an hour’s drive away. For more strenuous activities, you’re covered with treetop rope courses and toboggan runs at Zip World Fforest (half an hour) or the artificial waves at Adventure Parc Snowdonia’s surfing pool (45 minutes).
