View from the site

  • Dog-friendly pub site with grass pitches in Cerrigydrudion village
  • Llyn Alwen reservoir five minutes’ drive; Rhyl 50 minutes
  • Views of Eryri National Park; self-service shop next door
Cosy as cosy can be, Llew Gwyn Campsite occupies a small paddock at the back of a traditional, community-owned pub: the White Lion (Llew Gwyn in Welsh), in the village of Cerrigydrudion, Conwy. It’s a pretty spectacular location: blissfully rural, lusciously green and framed by views of the peaks of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), which you can reach in about 15 minutes’ drive. The site is mostly flat, with a total of 10 grass pitches, which makes for an appealingly peaceful experience. And the pitches come with a rather handy electric hook-up, meaning you can put the kettle on, make yourself a nice brew and finish that bestseller that’s got you hooked without having to wear a head torch. Nice. The kids (and the dog) have plenty of room to run around in, while the grown-ups might like to have a drink in the pub, of course, which is open from Wednesday to Sunday and arranges bingo nights, live music concerts and occasional craft workshops. For anything you need for the barbecue, there’s a grocery shop in the post office in the village (five minutes' walk away), plus a couple of large supermarkets within a 25-minute drive. The pub doesn’t yet serve food (though watch this space…), but there are several dining options along the A5 and in nearby towns like Bala (20 minutes).

Liked: Beautiful views. The owner was lovely very friendly and helpful. Site is as described. Toilets were very clean. The site is at the back of the carpark which I missed in the ad, it did say it was tiny. It would be idea for an overnight stays for adults or passing through, not idea with kids. Close to zip world. Price was really good. Walks were a short drive away. Local shop. Pub is 30 metres away.

Disliked: Only 1 shower on site which was electric. It was faulty, either extremely hot or ice cold. I got a cold shower but the kids were unable to use it.

Electric hardstanding and grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet spot with good toilet/shower facilities. A mobile chip shop arrived on site on the Wednesday and food was really tasty and good value for money. Little village shop 5 minutes walk away, forest walks 5 minutes drive away and easy access to Bala which is a straight 15/20minute drive away. Dog friendly, with dog friendly pub

Electric hardstanding and grass tent pitch

Liked: Views

Disliked: Being a campsite in a beer garden essentially, guests were drinking heavily. Had to complain about one pitch drinking, being loud and playing music which was dealt with but at 1am another pitch came back from the pub and started arguing heavily. I asked them to keep the noise down and they came out and got in my face trying to start a fight… they continued arguing among themselves loudly until finally passing out at 5am. Campsite consists of tent pitches in beer garden, 2 portaloos and 1 toilet/shower room.

Electric hardstanding and grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice size plot of land converted with electric hook up on slight incline but all good. Just opened up the weekend we visited.Views fabulous. Central location. Village location. There's a nice little pub on site no food served as of yet. Great carpark area. In the village there is another little pub that serves great home cooked food- to sell alcohol they must do it with food. Dermot the staff member was so helpful and polite. Shower /toilet room nice and new, shower hot with good power. Good signal on our phone for wifi Definitely be back.

Disliked: Nothing I disliked. Just my view - could do with separate toilet from shower as there's only one of each.

Local attractions

Walking and cycling trails around the Llyn Alwen (five minutes’ drive) and Llyn Brenig (10 minutes) reservoirs lead to forested lookout points with splendid views of the water. Alwen also has a waterskiing centre, while Brenig is home to a breeding pair of ospreys (you can watch them from a bird hide), not to mention plenty of rainbow trout for fly fishing. With its stone houses and old bridges, the pretty village of Betws-y-Coed (20 minutes) is well worth a visit. Walk the tree-shaded Tan Dinas Path along the river Afon Llugwy (complete with an animal discovery trail to keep the kids interested), and continue all the way to Rhaeadr Ewynnol / Swallow Falls Waterfall. At Traeth Pensarn (40 minutes), a vast expanse of shingle on the north coast of Wales, you can have a swim, launch the canoe or admire the sunset. For a sandy beach, head to Rhyl (50 minutes), where there is also the SC2 Rhyl waterpark.
