  • Peaceful rural location with superb views near Llangernyw, North Wales
  • A 25-minute drive to Conwy Castle; Snowdonia National Park 30 minutes
  • Animals and free-range hens on site; pub and shop five minutes’ drive
A small and easy-going sort of place with spectacular views over the Snowdonia foothills, pop-up Glan Y Gors campsite near Abergele sits on a peaceful, rural hilltop. It’s on the outskirts of the traditional Welsh village of Llangernyw, and very well placed for masses of things to do and see in North Wales. That is, of course, if you and the kids can ever stop gazing at all the cute animals sharing the five-acre smallholding with you. Pedigree Soay sheep and playful Pygmy goats are bred here, while happy free-range hens get busy laying delicious eggs for your breakfast – buy them from the honesty box. Dogs are welcome too on your Welsh sojourn (just keep them under control around the livestock please) and it’s a doodle to exercise them as footpaths lead directly from the camping field. If you are off out seeing the sights by day, do try to get back to home base on a clear night to see the colourful sunset and later lie back around the barbecues to take in the glittering night skies. With a basics shop and post office, Llangernyw village (five minutes’ drive) also offers up a friendly pub serving home-cooked food and real ales; it also has a takeaway service so you can have cosy suppers around the campfire.

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Travelled with two older children, two younger children. Nothing for either.

Disliked: Entrance was heavily bogged down, so was the access to the showers. This led to facilities being dirty and wet. Given there was only two people in the camp you would expect this to be cleaner. As for "showers" it's singular, shower. Temperature fluctuates heavily during use with moderate to low pressure. You won't have a quiet night as there is livestock all around, geese, chickens and a rooster that always go when you get out of your rig. There wasn't much in the way of facilities, some that were listed were not present. Felt like an inconvenience to the owner that we had even booked.

From the manager: Thank you for your review on your 1 night stay in the worst weather imaginable. It seems however that you have made some inaccurate comments. You rang on your approach to ask for directions and I guided you to the site. I was in the field as you arrived and came over to helpfully direct you to the best place to pitch. It was very wet and windy so as soon as you drove into position I went back inside- not sure what else you expected? Unfortunately the whole country has had unprecedented wind & heavy rainfall for the time of year and everywhere the ground is saturated. We had in fact closed off the majority of pitches due to the weather. The toilet block is checked at least 3 times a day and during one of the checks the joint on a water pipe at the entrance was found to be burst open which would have caused low pressure. This was really obvious to see and it would have been useful to know that you had experienced a problem so it could have been rectified sooner. The description does clearly state that we are a rural small holding with animals and livestock around and please note that all listed facilities are present.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely location, loved the animals and scenery. Children playing together in the middle of the site.

Disliked: Toilets and showers are a little 'rustic', and the site was abit crowded and sloping. Thankfully we had lovely neighbours, otherwise it could have been a disaster as our tents were very close.

Local attractions

Pretty Llangernyw (five minutes’ drive) has an unusual whitewashed church and is well-known for the (circa) 5,000-year-old yew tree in the graveyard. Close by is the Sir Henry Jones Museum, laid out with period rooms and a shoe-maker’s workshop in the white-washed birthplace of the famous Welsh philosopher. Fancy ticking a few major attractions off the bucket list? Conwy Castle (25 minutes) is open for tours of the former royal apartments, while there are bracing walks and Irish Sea panoramas up the Great Orme in Llandudno (half an hour). Glittering sands await on the expansive Colwyn Bay Beach (15 minutes), and there are gorgeous, colourful (especially in spring and autumn) walks to be had at National Trust-owned Bodnant Garden (20 minutes). And of course, the Snowdonia National Park (half an hour) is the scenic backdrop to many, many mountain hiking and biking adventures, and you can explore deep underground at the National Slate Museum (an hour) or try to get your balance on the consistent surfing breaks at Surf Snowdonia (half an hour). Adrenaline-seekers can also zoom down high wires at Zip World Fforest (25 minutes).
