  • Luxury canvas safari tents set on a farm in the Brecon Beacons
  • On the outskirts of Talybont-on-Usk, a 15-minute drive to Crickhowell
  • Private hot tubs, firepits and beds with Egyptian sheets for each unit
When hearts are set on a swish and stylish stay in the Brecon Beacons, Gilestone Glamping makes a fine pick – this luxury glampsite on a working farm in the west Wales national park is fully primed for peaceful hols in canvas safari tents with proper beds, Egyptian linens and private firepits. But perhaps the best part…? Each unit also has a woodfired hot tub to wallow in, plus a personal ‘Pitch Pod’ shower room with a shower, flushing toilet and basin. To offset all this opulence, check out the splendid natural surrounds: pheasants wander freely all over the grounds and buzzards, red kites and herons are regularly spotted overhead. Guests are welcome to tour the farm with owner Charles, kids can help feed orphan lambs, and those who like to travel light will be chuffed to note a hard road runs right through the site (so packing wellies isn’t absolutely essential). You might, however, want to pull on a pair of boots if you’re aiming to tramp in the local area – wanders up to the peaks of the Beacons are to be had straight from this spot on the edges of Talybont-on-Usk, 15 minutes’ drive from both Brecon and Crickhowell. And if you’re not up for roaming far from your comfy base? Stay on site and make the most of another aspect of this fine farm setting: a pear orchard where guests are encouraged to help themselves.

Local attractions

For a small village, Talybont is well known for outdoor activities: it’s home to two rivers, hills, woods and waterfalls, as well as a playground. Recommended walks from here or the site include leisurely ambles along the canal, easy waterfall hikes and circular strolls around central stretches of the Brecon Beacons – chat with Charles for advice on where to go. You might also like to tap him for info on biking along the canal towpath and the road trails too, or forgo the pedalling and drive kids to the petting farm, riding stables and Europe’s longest sledge ride (all at Cantref Adventure Farm, 15 minutes away). A play barn’s at Brynich (10 minutes) for indoor amusement, and most young adventurers will get gleeful giggles goggling at the swooping sights of The Red Kite Feeding Station at Llangadog (40 minutes). The Brecon Mountain Railway (30 minutes) is also likely to be a hit, as are the animatronic dinosaurs and huge caverns of the National Showcaves at Dan yr Ogof (35 minutes). Townwise, make for the cathedral, theatre, antique shops and Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh at Brecon (15 minutes) or the independent shops and local eats of Crickhowell, the same distance in the other direction.
