In the Abergwesyn Valley and tucked away in a dark sky reserve, there’s a glamping site on a farm that could be an adventure park all on its own. At Welsh Glamping, feel free to explore the woodlands, swim in the river and take in the sublime views – or head out to explore the Elan Valley (40 minutes’ drive) and Abergwesyn Common (half an hour’s walk). This spot is renowned for its dark skies and low light pollution so it’s an excellent spot for stargazing too. The site welcomes all looking for a digital detox – couples, families and those celebrating special occasions included. There’s limited mobile phone signal in the valley, so with your devices stowed away, there’s plenty of time to reconnect with each other, get exploring or to reach for a book or a board game (plenty of quality time can surely be had here). Campfires and barbecues are welcome here, but those who want a break from cooking can head to the pub 10 minutes’ drive away. There are many more eating-out options in the little town of Llanwrtyd Wells (15 minutes). The town holds events throughout the year such as the World Bog Snorkelling Championship, the Man versus Horse Marathon and the Alternative World Games. Of course, the Elan Valley is a big beauty spot for wildlife fans. After a walk around the dam, there are brews available in the visitor centre. Then, pick up the necessities for your on-site barbecues from the shops in Beulah (10 minutes) or from Builth Wells’ (25 minutes) independent shops, butchers and bakery.

Local attractions

​Check the schedule and see if there’s an event you fancy at the Royal Welsh Showground (25 minutes’ drive). Brecon (45 minutes) has plenty in the way of entertainment too, from boating on the canal to visiting Brecon Cathedral and the The Royal Welsh Regimental Museum. If you’re looking to get in plenty of scenic treks, you’re very much in the right place. There’s plenty of wildlife hiding out around the conifer forest and moorlands of the Nant Irfon National Nature Reserve (five minutes), and Cwm Rhaeadr Forest (40 minutes) has a waterfall and mountain biking trails for those who’d like the pick up the pace. A drive around the hairpin bends on the Devil's Staircase (10 minutes) is a must for those who like an exciting drive (driving carefully, of course). If you’d also like the chance to see red kites taking their breakfast or dinner, head to The Red Kite Feeding Station (50 minutes).
