  • Scenic, secluded adults-only site close to the Powys/Shropshire border
  • Vyrnwy Lake and Pistyll Rhaeadr within a half-hour drive
  • Next to the River Cain for fishing; kitchen and firepits on site
Ahhh, Powys. It’s got a lot going for it – being in the scenic wilds of Wales yet so close to England’s stunning county of Shropshire. But what it’s also fab for? Tipis at Ponty, an adults-only site on a pretty six-acre smallholding by the border between two nations. Access to attractions and activities aside, this park’s immediate location is worth the visit alone: it’s flanked by a three-acre paddock and the banks of the River Cain, where you’re welcome to fish or just settle in and admire the gorgeous views up the valley. Seating and firepits are provided, so there’s always a comfy, warm spot out in the open air, and to keep the peaceful vibe intact it’s a vehicle-free site with wheelbarrows supplied to help you cart your kit around the place. Well-behaved dogs are allowed to come along for your break too. All in all, the facilities are fantastic hereabouts: they include two bespoke wetrooms and a kitchenette that’s kitted out with fridges, freezer, a microwave and a washing-up area along with a little ‘honesty box’ shop selling various products prepped by in-house chefs Ian and Jane. Themed meals are occasionally offered during busy periods on site. Guests are also welcome to use the Sunset Shack in the upper copse, a cosy hideaway with seating for both dining and relaxing alongside a cooking area with a double gas hob. As the name suggests, this is the place to go for top views of the spectacular sunsets that often appear around these parts. Meanwhile, the village of Llansantffraid (just under a mile away) is your go-to for mini supermarkets, pubs, a chip shop and a curry house.

Dafyyd non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: I absolutely loved this place, so much so that I changed from 2 nights to 3 nights once I had arrived! I was on the Daffyd pitch which was spacious and had a gorgeous view across the hills, it was also close to all of the facilities (sunset shack, showers (hot and powerful), communal kitchen etc). I spent a lot of time just observing and listening to nature and I was lucky enough to be treated to the best shooting stars I've ever seen! The grounds are beautiful and there is lots to explore nearby. I even took a kayak out but it was a bit too shallow. Had a wild swim also! I was a solo female traveller and was made to feel really welcome, both by Ian and Jane but also other campers that I ran into. There were so many lovely little touches here that made it a home from home, homemade produce in the little shop and blankets to use in the sunset shack which I did one rainy day whilst reading my book and listening to the rain fall on the tin looking over the countryside. Sooo peaceful! You can also have breakfast delivered, I had sourdough croissants with homemade jam and they were really tasty! I will 100% be back!! I really enjoyed my stay!

Disliked: Nothing!!

Non-electric grass tent pitch (wild)

Liked: This place is amazing, if you want to recharge and realx then this is the place. Pitch up and just listen to silence, sheep and birdsong. The owners Ian and Jane are very welcoming and friendly. There is a lovely spot to swim in the river and if you're lucky you might see a kingfisher or otters.

Disliked: Nothing.

Algie non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Lots of wildlife to see - wrens, owls, dragon and damselflies, toads galore! Owners very friendly and welcoming. Great to have a fridge and mini shop for supplies available Really nice that it is an adult only campsite.

Disliked: The road noise is quite loud on Don Don and Algie plots which would put me off visiting again I'm afraid. There is also a very steep hill down to Don Don and Algie which some campers may need to be aware of when booking - didn't bother us but worth noting. Shower fans not working so the shower/toilet doors are going a bit mouldy...
