  • Pop-up tourer campsite behind The Abermule Inn in Powys, Wales
  • Dolforwyn Castle five minutes’ drive; Powis Castle 20 minutes
  • Grass and gravel pitches; pub open daily; shops five minutes’ drive
Liking the sound of parking up at a Powys pub, with all the food-and-drink opportunities it brings? Here’s your chance to do just that, for The Travelling Mule is a sheltered tourer camping field tucked handily behind The Abermule Inn in the pretty village of the same name. Sheltered all around by mature trees, the grass and gravel pitches at this pop-up site are five minutes’ walk to the meandering curves of the rivers Severn and Mule, or towpath walks along the Montgomery Canal, so it’s easy to stretch your legs and exercise any canines who came along for the ride too. Pick up provisions for your stay at Newtown (five minutes’ drive) supermarkets, and if the weather permits, there’s a communal firepit for conjuring up simple camping fodder outdoors. Otherwise, the family-friendly pub itself is open for drinks daily, and seasonal menus between Wednesday and Sunday; music festivals are also held there a couple of times a year, and there’s an expansive beer garden for leisurely afternoons on warmer days.

What customers say

Guests highlight the exceptionally welcoming and friendly atmosphere, particularly praising the landlord and staff for making their stays perfect. The pub offers delicious food, including tapas, and has a great atmosphere, even when busy. While the touring pitch itself may appear a little dishevelled with ongoing works, the hospitality, peaceful sleep, and good value make it a highly recommended stopover or short stay, with many looking forward to returning. The nearby canal is ideal for dog walking.

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Great location, friendly owner and staff. Great local pub, and lovely food friendly locals. Extremely helpful.
Currently under some renovation work, however not to disruptive and will be great once completed.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your kind words! We’re so glad you enjoyed the location, the pub, and the friendly atmosphere. It’s great to hear you found our team helpful and the locals welcoming. Yes, there’s a bit of renovation going on, but we appreciate your understanding and we’re excited for you (and future guests) to see the improvements once they’re complete.

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked The grass non electric area for our campervan was a waste land of soil as we were told new septic tanks had been fitted. We were offered the small pub car park or a small area of hard standing between two touring/permanent caravans. The whole place was full junk and machinery and we just didn't like the vibe, so drove and found a lovely cheaper site 20mins away. The photos on pitch up are nothing like the experience. Just glad we had time to move on. Obviously we lost our deposit! Phone and check ahead if the grass area has grown and can be used !!

From the manager: We feel it’s important to clarify the circumstances for others reading this review. The photos on Pitchup were taken before urgent emergency works had to take place, which unfortunately meant a portion of the grass non-electric area became unavailable. These works, including septic tank upgrades - are essential for the long-term improvement of the site.

When this guest arrived, we explained the situation immediately and offered two alternative pitches, both of which other visitors have been happy to use. Unfortunately, from the moment they arrived, they turned their nose up and chose not to give the site a chance.

Yes, there was machinery on site, but only because the works were in progress and could not be delayed, something that does not impact the safety or enjoyment of the majority of our guests. Many visitors during the same period have enjoyed their stay and appreciated the improvements being made. We always encourage guests with specific requirements to call ahead so we can ensure the best possible experience.

Cheap, welcoming pub, basic but does the job. Staff were very friendly…

Non-electric grass and gravel tent pitch

Liked Cheap, welcoming pub, basic but does the job. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Disliked The pitching area isnt as per the photos, full of bits so dont expect much space.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We’re glad you enjoyed our welcoming pub and friendly staff. The pitching area is currently smaller than in the photos because urgent improvement works had to be carried out- something outside our control but necessary for the site’s long-term benefit.

When space is reduced, we always offer alternative pitches, and many guests are happy to stay. While you’ve said you wouldn’t return, we’re confident most visitors appreciate both the hospitality and the upgrades being made, and the pitching area will soon be restored to its full size as shown in our photos.

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked When we first arrived the site it's self looked a little dishevelled as it's obvious they are having some works done but the greeting from the landlord completely over took those images.

He gave us an option of 3 different places to park and we parked up in the corner on the carpark.

We had booked in for our evening meal and from the time entering the pub till leaving we were greeted as old friends from the landlord, the staff and the regulars even made friends with a lovely young family and have booked in to return and meet up again.

Saturday evening was rammed and you had to have patience with the food coming as they had two big groups in but again the atmosphere was fabulous.

As for sleep it was quiet, undisturbed and peaceful.

Can't recommend enough, it's not perfect but the landlord and his team were and made our stay perfect thank you so much and see you soon.

From the manager: Thank you for such a wonderful review! We’re delighted you felt so welcome from the moment you arrived and that the atmosphere, staff, and regulars made your stay so enjoyable. We really appreciate your patience during a busy Saturday evening and are so pleased you enjoyed the food, company, and peaceful night’s sleep. It means a lot to hear you’ve already booked to return- we look forward to welcoming you back and seeing you again soon!

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked This pop up touring pitch does what it says on the tin.
We just stayed one night to break our journey. We parked up and walked our dog along the Montgomery canal (3 mins away)
The staff in the pub were lovely and friendly. The food was delicious (we had tapas) the toilets were available to use all night in the pub and they had a shower available. Which I used the next morning. Although I had to hold it as the catch was broken, but it was warm and you didn’t have to pay for it.
Bargain for £18 for the night.
Would definitely use as a stopover again. Thanks for your hospitality 🙂

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked no

Disliked We booked on line for that evening but on arrival the site was not as we thought.
There was a row of probably stored caravans and a few old vehicles on the grass which was long. All felt uncared for and not a place we wanted to stay.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: hello (anonymous)
a couple of things we would like to pick up on in your "review"
1) our caravans are not "stored" they are enjoyed by people who come to visit us often, contrary to what you saw.
2) a few old vehicles? more like customers who have parked on the grass far away and a safe distance away from your pitch.
I would also like to point out that we value constructive feedback, but to say you enjoyed nothing about your stay? a peaceful and safe place to sleep? 24 access to clean showers and toilet area? for a reasonable price?
we sincerely hope you find a site that meets your standards.

Local attractions

Walkers will be in their element with a choice of waterside routes. Take gentle kid-friendly meanders along the tree-shaded Montgomery Canal Towpath, or follow the River Severn Path into Newton (90 minutes’ walk), stopping off to watch for kingfishers and grebes at Pwll Penarth Nature Reserve (55 minutes) along the way. Learn up on Powys history on a visit to the photogenic hilltop ruins of Dolforwyn Castle (five minutes’ drive), built in 1273 to defend the Severn Valley against attack from over the border in England. There’s more Welsh heritage to be seen at National Trust-owned Powis Castle and Garden (20 minutes), where you can nose around sumptuous interiors and have a wander through formal gardens planted with 300-year-old yew hedges. See a Welsh craftsman at work in the Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture (10 minutes, book in advance), where there’s an eccentric collection of colourful installations and bespoke jewellery made from recycled glass, papier-mâché and textiles. Round off the day in Powys by sampling some sparkling rosé at Kerry Vale Vineyard (15 minutes), open for tours of the vines and tastings at the cellar door.
