  • Family-friendly site on the banks of the Banwy river in Mid Wales
  • A five-minute drive to a steam railway; 10 minutes to Welshpool
  • River fishing permitted and mountain walks nearby; play area on site
Whether you're planning days of outdoor pursuits or scenic steam railway rides, your holiday in Mid Wales should be off to a flying start at Henllan Caravan Park… this family-friendly site first opened in the 1960s and it has grown into a very gorgeous spot to set down on the banks of the Banwy river, with fishing available in the river and a play area set up for those guests who have brought the whole family along. There’s a golf course 10 minutes’ drive away for any keen golfers and the surrounding Powys landscape has many opportunities for things like mountain biking, swimming, climbing and hiking for all the adventurous types. When you're hungry or thirsty, a pub is open on weekends and at peak periods. Food is available on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as Sunday mornings. Shops, pubs and more of that sort of thing can be tracked down in Welshpool, 10 minutes’ drive away. This historic town has some gorgeous Georgian buildings and the Montgomery Canal for a peaceful stroll or you could look in on the National Trust’s Powis Castle and Garden (20 minutes) while you’re around there. For more nostalgic activities, the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway is five minutes’ drive from the site. Back at your riverside site, there’s a shower block ready for you to freshen up. The pitches themselves are all well maintained and flat with great views, so your stay should be both comfortable and scenic. Please note that the facilities block is approximately 300 yards from the main pitching area.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely site, very welcoming. Beautiful surroundings and very peaceful. Cute little pub with friendly owners, we enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back.

Disliked: The toilet/shower block is far as mentioned before. It’s in the middle of the static caravans which doesn’t make sense as they have their own toilet and shower. We have young children so has to drive down as there is no space to get them changed after. Also the washing area is there too so wouldn’t have been able to carry towels, clothes pots and pans. It would be a massive improvement if there was toilet/shower/washing area near to the tent pitches.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Good size site, very well maintained, clean. Friendly welcome from the owners. Nice pitch on level ground and easy to peg.

Disliked: Bit of a walk to the toilets from the camping pitches. Only 2 toilets and 1 shower for the site. If it got busy I’d imagine this could be a problem but was quiet when we went so not an issue. Not much on the park for the kids. I’m being really picky here because overall I had a very good stay.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Place was amazing, loads space around pitch and right by park so ideal for our youngest , dogs had room to roam on lead , great dog park , toilet and shower block clean by far away from pitch- ideally needs toilets located by tent pitch for younger children as it’s a long walk at night , site was quiet and perfect for peaceful couple days .

Electric grass pitch

Liked: This stay was close enough to local amenities with a bar on site which is open at the weekends and for food between 6-8pm. Our friends were also able to use their paddleboard as it was right on the river which was a nice bonus too.

Disliked: We really enjoyed this stay the only downside was how far the toilet block was from the tent pitch and there is only 1 womens/mens shower cubicle and 2 women's/mens toilets for the whole site which was a bit tricky

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely campsite right next to the river. Everywhere was clean and tidy.

Disliked: Toilet and shower block a bit too far from the campsite. Close to the static caravans which don’t need a toilet and shower block.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Grounds are beautiful, with a river running through the site which is away from the pitches so there's no risk of children stumbling upon it if you have an eye on them. A little play area to occupy the kids too. The toilets and shower were clean. Very tranquil

Disliked: The pitches feel a little on top of one another despite a huge space around, which is a shame. The toilets are way too far from the tent pitches. It's not a long walk, maybe 5 minutes, but when you are desperate first thing in the morning, or have small children who need to go right now, it's far from ideal. There's space right behind the pitches to add something in so it's actually accessible to the tent pitches, if they did that, it would be a very nice campsite.

Local attractions

With Eryri/Snowdonia National Park to the west and the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the south-east, there’s a lot of hiking accessible from this site. You could set your compass towards Lake Vyrnwy (35 minutes' drive), just outside of Snowdonia, for a day of lakeside walks, watersports and cycling followed by a cream tea – or perhaps head up towards Pistyll Rhaeadr (45 minutes) for a four-mile hike with a reward in the form of a spectacular waterfall. Add some historical elements to your holiday in the Shropshire Hills AONB. The Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle (35 minutes) still stands from the Bronze Age and the moorlands of the surrounding Stapeley Hill make for another splendid walk. Then there are the Stiperstones (45 minutes), a cool ridge that's made up of rocks that are hundreds of millions of years old – another place for a good long wander. When you’re ready to muck into the rural way of life, head to Park Hall The Countryside Experience (40 minutes), a farm with play areas that has opened its doors for families to get involved in animal activities like meeting the alpacas or watching the pig racing.
