  • Family-friendly farm site in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Orchard stays five minutes' drive from Talgarth
  • On the edge of a river; tap room on site with craft beer and cider
One of the things that many folk seek on a camping holiday is a campfire. Men, women, dogs, kids, first-time campers and even cynical console-clicking teenagers – all are captivated by the crackling of the flames where they can cheerfully char their very own food among the smouldering depths. (Campfires might even make you go all poetic…) And a campfire in a permanent fireplace among pitches in an old, lovely and sheltered apple orchard, while watching the sun set over the Welsh mountains from the light of the flames? Pass the ginger beer and pitch up at Lower Porthamel Camping on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Powys, a chilled-out and friendly farm site mixing old-school camping with that other camping essential, showers with hot water (for which there is a small charge). As well as the permanent fireplace, guests at Lower Porthamel can bring along firepits for campfires which are allowed on any pitches on site (stones from the site may not be used to build fires). If you don’t fancy a campfire (tsk), use the outdoor kitchen to cook in; there's also a wood-fired oven in the outdoor kitchen if you fancy a crack at cooking your own pizza. The on-site tap room Sobremesa Drinks has a range of craft beers and ciders. Other facilities on site include an indoor washing-up area, and a toilet and shower block near the orchard with hot water and facilities for disabled guests. Outdoors, the mile and a half trek directly from site runs through the farm fields and woodland, along the old mid-Wales railway line and onwards to the River Llynfi, a Site of Special Scientific Interest where the keen-eyed can see otters, badgers, kingfishers and herons – part of the SSSI ends up in the wildlife-rich Brecon Beacons National Park to see some more. Cars are not allowed onto the camping field. Instead, they can be parked on the concrete area provided, where there are wheelbarrows for you to move your things to your pitch. The site operates a zero waste policy and guests must take all rubbish home with them.

Orchard non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: There's so much to like about this campsite... Pitching amongst an orchard, car free field, nature walk a few yards from our pitch (with a river for dog/child paddling), seeing for children, on site tap room with great beer/ cider, delicious charcuterie & cheese boards at the tap room, fire pits/ logs available, very friendly and helpful staff.

Disliked: Our first night was extremely busy (bank holiday combined with hay festival) so the facilities were a little stretched, though they were more than sufficient on the other nights. A nice to have would be soap and paper towels in both toilets, one had soap, the other towels, not a big issue as I could travel between the 2. (as a contact lens wearer I need to ensure I remove them with clean & dry hands).

Orchard non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Excellent friendly campsite with good quality pitches that were well spaced out. The campsite has everything you could need and was great value for money. The onsite brewery was a big plus.

Disliked: Showers required £1 coin to start and were on a timer which was a little awkward but was ultimately a minor inconvenience

Orchard non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We came for one night with our dog (Billy) and it was absolutely beautiful setting up our tent amongst the orchards and lighting our firepit in the evenings!! Also Sobremesa where they brew the most amazing ales and cider as well as a fantastic cheese and meat board which is situated on the end of the campsite where you can chat to the locals and have a beer or two! There is also a lovely nature trail that you can walk and go to the river and walk to a few pubs/restaurants which is close by!! we will be returning

Local attractions

Walks, walks and more walks, adventure sports, splendid scenery, the Black Mountains, the Brecon Beacons National Park and the bookish town of Hay-on-Wye are the main attractions in this part of Welsh countryside. Talgarth, about a mile and a half away, is a small market town with a big amount of things to do and is a well-known Welsh hang-gliding and gliding base for the very adventurous (well worth it for the spectacular scenery you can work up the nerve). On land, mountain biking and pony trekking can be had both in the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons, and canoeing, kayaking and rowing on Llangorse Lake and the River Wye. Regarded as one of the UK’s best fishing rivers, the Wye yields salmon, trout, carp, barbel and pike, many of monstrous proportions. Alternatively, hike along to famous book town Hay-on-Wye for a relaxing day among its foodie outlets and a glorious two dozen bookshops.
