Camping amongst the apple trees

  • Family-friendly farm site in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Orchard stays five minutes' drive from Talgarth
  • On the edge of a river; tap room on site with craft beer and cider
One of the things that many folk seek on a camping holiday is a campfire. Men, women, dogs, kids, first-time campers and even cynical console-clicking teenagers – all are captivated by the crackling of the flames where they can cheerfully char their very own food among the smouldering depths. (Campfires might even make you go all poetic…) And a campfire in a permanent fireplace among pitches in an old, lovely and sheltered apple orchard, while watching the sun set over the Welsh mountains from the light of the flames? Pass the ginger beer and pitch up at Lower Porthamel Camping on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Powys, a chilled-out and friendly farm site mixing old-school camping with that other camping essential, showers with hot water (for which there is a small charge). As well as the permanent fireplace, guests at Lower Porthamel can bring along firepits for campfires which are allowed on any pitches on site (stones from the site may not be used to build fires). If you don’t fancy a campfire (tsk), use the outdoor kitchen to cook in; there's also a wood-fired oven in the outdoor kitchen if you fancy a crack at cooking your own pizza. The on-site tap room Sobremesa Drinks has a range of craft beers and ciders. Other facilities on site include an indoor washing-up area, and a toilet and shower block near the orchard with hot water and facilities for disabled guests. Outdoors, the mile and a half trek directly from site runs through the farm fields and woodland, along the old mid-Wales railway line and onwards to the River Llynfi, a Site of Special Scientific Interest where the keen-eyed can see otters, badgers, kingfishers and herons – part of the SSSI ends up in the wildlife-rich Brecon Beacons National Park to see some more. Cars are not allowed onto the camping field. Instead, they can be parked on the concrete area provided, where there are wheelbarrows for you to move your things to your pitch. The site operates a zero waste policy and guests must take all rubbish home with them.

Liked Lovely setting in the orchard. It really felt quite unique and part of a working farm too. The cider and cheese board provided by our host Adrian was just great. Thanks for a lovely time for Dad and Daughter.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The solitude of the site. The staff were very friendly & helpful. The toilet facilities were clean & adequate for our needs. The free use of the barbeque & the firepits were great.

Disliked Clearer directions to the camp site & information about where to pitch for late arrivals would be useful. Access to food preparation area would also have been useful.

Peaceful and Convenient Stop After Hiking in the Brecon Beacons.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked After a long and tiring day hiking in the Brecon Beacons, Lower Porthamel Camping was the perfect place to rest for the night. The site is peaceful, quiet, and felt very safe—just what I needed after a full day outdoors.

All the essential facilities were available, including clean shower rooms, and secure parking. One thing that really stood out was how clean the entire campsite was. Visitors are expected to manage their own rubbish, which encourages everyone to keep the space tidy and respectful—something I really appreciated.

Overall, it’s a well-maintained, no-fuss campsite that I’d definitely recommend to anyone exploring the area.

Liked Beautiful location amongst the apple trees, with basic, but clean and well maintained, facilities. Loved the tap room, serving artisinal ciders and beers made at the farm. Also the cheese and charcuterie boards served in the tap room are fantastic.
Fire pits, logs and kindling are available to allow you to finish your day, gazing into the flames.

Disliked There is nothing to dislike in my opinion.

Liked Beautiful campsite with big pitches well spaced apart with apple trees in between to give a sense of privacy. Perfect for our children to explore and run around safely. Facilities are really clean and the onsite tap room is the cherry on top. Also loved the nature walk.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (large)

Liked Beautiful orchard campsite, surrounded by farm animals and wildlife, such as red kites, swallows and rabbits. My 9 year old loved the walk down to stream where we paddled in the water. He also loved the apple tree with the large half-fallen branch where he climbed up with his camping pillow and sat reading. Thanks to the no-cars policy, my one year old was able to toddler around in front of our pitch with relative safety. The toilet facilities were simple but clean and £1 lasted ages in the shower. For us grown ups, the beer from the tap-room was fantastic and we all appreciated being able to have fires. Staff were friendly and helpful and the whole site had a happy, friendly feel. We can't wait to return.

Local attractions

Walks, walks and more walks, adventure sports, splendid scenery, the Black Mountains, the Brecon Beacons National Park and the bookish town of Hay-on-Wye are the main attractions in this part of Welsh countryside. Talgarth, about a mile and a half away, is a small market town with a big amount of things to do and is a well-known Welsh hang-gliding and gliding base for the very adventurous (well worth it for the spectacular scenery you can work up the nerve). On land, mountain biking and pony trekking can be had both in the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons, and canoeing, kayaking and rowing on Llangorse Lake and the River Wye. Regarded as one of the UK’s best fishing rivers, the Wye yields salmon, trout, carp, barbel and pike, many of monstrous proportions. Alternatively, hike along to famous book town Hay-on-Wye for a relaxing day among its foodie outlets and a glorious two dozen bookshops.
