Camping in style – and without the need to bring heaps of kit along – is the order of the day at Woodhouse Farm (St Harmon, Rhayader), a peaceful Powys site among the gorgeous landscapes of the Cambrian Mountains about 10 minutes' drive from Rhayader. This is a proper rural retreat, a good way from any traffic-filled roads and with a good number of public footpaths and bridleways to explore in the area (including Glyndŵr's Way, which passes very close by). It's the kind of place where you’re likely to wake to birdsong and end the day looking up at glittering displays of stars in the dark skies overhead. In between those times, there are plenty of activities to fill your days with – Rhayader is, after all, becoming known as the ‘outdoor capital of Wales’, and the nearby area is also home to some splendid scenery, including that of the Elan Valley. You’re welcome to book your dog and/or horse in for a stay here too, so no one has to miss out on the chance for a Mid Wales break. As for the human guests, the farm’s bell tent sleeps up to six and can be configured just as you want it, making it a fabulous option for a family, a couple or a small group of pals. Pretty much everything you need for an outdoor break is provided here, including bed linen, towels, cooking equipment, a barbecue, a firepit and a wood-fired pizza oven. It's a self-catering setup here but you can book breakfast hampers as extras if you'd like an easy start to the day. The bell tent is in a quiet private area near to the farm’s campsite, and you'll have access to the shared bathroom facilities.

Bell tent

Liked: We had an amazing break away here. Owners are lovely friendly couple who can't do enough to make your stay exactly how you want it. The area where the bell tent is is beautiful, clean and felt like a luxury stay with everything you would need for a peaceful off the grid experience. The bed was very comfortable, and the set up inside was idyllic. We ordered the breakfast basket which was exceptional and well worth every penny. The views are amazing both day and night. We took our dog with us and Norma and Justin greeted him and accommodated him perfectly. There was an enclosed space for him to run which he loved. We also had some wood from owners to use the firepit provided too. There are some animals on camp which was lovely to see around and children would love while they stayed. There are shower and washing up facilities and a waste disposal if needed. Everything was there for a stay if you were camping in a tent and would definitely take our own tent and stay there too. They are on the doorstep of some beautiful walks and is a walkers paradise. Can't thank them enough for the perfect weekend we had there and their hospitality.

Bell tent

Liked: Beautiful views, off grid, back to nature. Lovely owners that ensured our stay was as comfortable as possible. Horses in field which our child loved and was able to pet. Lovely off lead area for dog to run around. Quiet surround, back to nature. Very friendly and helpful people.

Disliked: Nothing we disliked but worth noting there is only one toilet for campers. Not a problem tho if not busy.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your wonderful review. We're glad you had a comfortable stay. Additional toilets and showers are currently in the planning process so hopefully, as we get busier, this will be addressed. We hope to see you again in the future :-)

Local attractions

Rhayader sits at the centre of an area that’s got several attractions for wildlife fans – a trip to the Red Kite Feeding Station is often a highlight, and you might like to tie it in with an experience at Valley View Falconry (both 15 minutes' drive). If it's walks you’re after, there are plenty of excellent options, including the Elan Valley (20 minutes), Clywedog Reservoir (25 minutes) and Hafren Forest (40 minutes), where you can also seek out the source of the River Severn. For gentler options, take a stroll around Gilfach Nature Reserve (10 minutes) or plan an outing to Powis Castle and Garden (50 minutes). The scenery around here is pretty special, but if you'd like to take a little break and get some sea views in too, that's possible as well – it's an hour's drive to Aberystwyth for a ride on the cliff railway and a stroll on the pier.
