  • Family-friendly site 15 minutes' drive from Elan Valley walks
  • Ramblers’ haven: Glyndŵrs Way, Ceredigion Coast Path within an hour
  • Simple pitches on a family farm with campfires and barbecues allowed
Bring your walking boots, bring your bikes, bring your cameras… Cae Llwyn Camping’s location on a Powys farm means that it’s an excellent base for all sorts of outdoorsy days. This family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Rhayader is particularly well placed for hikers: it’s 15 minutes' drive from the spectacular Elan Valley and has the Ceredigion Coast Path and Glyndŵrs Way within an hour as well. Getting out and about to all of these is fairly straightforward thanks to a handy location a short way off the A44 near Nantmel. Mountain bike trails, cycling paths and pony trekking are all available nearby too, and nearby Rhayader is famed for the red kites that fly overhead and often come down to feed. If you’d like a closer encounter with the big birds, sign up for a falconry day at one of the centres close by. Book a spot at Cae Llwyn and you’ll be staying on grass pitches at a family farm, with a river running past one end of the camping field. Simple facilities include a toilet and shower block, and you’ll be able to make the most of your evenings in the fresh air by lighting up a barbecue or campfire.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very nice site. Well maintained. Well thought out. Owners have done a great job. The camping field is past all the cabins. Good size. Don’t think you will ever be on top of other campers. One side is by a stream which is nice. Grass is not cut but left for the sheep to maintain which was fine for me. Owners seem to take note of the reviews as they have built a small hut with sink and water. Toilets and showers really nice. Heated and clean. Couple of mins walk which was not a problem. The best value for money basic camping site I have stayed at.

Disliked: Alot of sheep droppings to navigate (minor). Directions and pointer on map could be more accurate. Drove up and down the lane couple of times. Only half mile at most from main road. Frosty reception from owner when I went to pay in the morning before leaving (as agreed by phone the day before). May be it was the fact I was on a motorcycle.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Clean, neat and tidy. Level pitches. Good facilities.

Disliked: I was camping in a field with sheep. They were in lush grass and so was I. Sheep do what they have to do so selecting a bit of clean ground was essential. Nowhere evident to leave rubbish. In a car this would not be a problem but for a cycle camper it was awkward.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Pictures don’t do this site justice. Very clean modern site with excellent clean showers /toilets. Local shops within 5 min drive.

Disliked: Could do with more bins. Grass on camping area was long and found it difficult to pitch tent.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: liked everything. Camping bye the river was idyllic. The facilities are spotless, and we were made to feel very Welcome by Clare. We stayed two nights and will be going back soon. Sat by the river you can see the kingfishers flying pass at speed, red Kite above and if your lucky maybe hear the Peacock. Best read detailed instruction on how to find this, it is very easy to find but some folk do have trouble. So from the camping field the facilities are a short walk and also washing up facilities just outside camping field. All very clean.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

Could it be the walks that have drawn you to this area? The Elan Valley (15 minutes’ drive) is a perennially popular location for hikers, with highlights including the Rhayader waterfalls and huge Craig Goch Dam to take in on your walks. If you’re after something more challenging, you’re not far from the 135-mile route of Glyndŵrs Way. A couple of local farms can fix you up with pony trekking if you’d like to explore in a different way, and there are also two falconry experiences within a few minutes’ drive of the site. A real must nearby is to stop in at the Red Kite Feeding Station in Rhayader (10 minutes) to see the majestic birds swooping in for a meal. For a change of scenery it’ll take you a little under an hour to drive to the Ceredigion coast for walks on the coast path or a ride on the Vale of Rheidol Railway from Aberystwyth. You could stop in at Devil’s Bridge Falls (40 minutes) for another walk along the way too if you wish.
