Belan Bluebell Woods: The view in the afternoon sunshine

General

  • Scenic and off-grid back to nature site on a 60-acre farm
  • A 10-minute drive from Llanidloes and 45 minutes from Aberystwyth
  • Locally sourced barbecue meat plus hampers and breakfast all available

Seeking a nature-filled getaway with a few added luxuries? Find your way to Belan Bluebell Woods, a family-friendly site in the tiny Powys hamlet of Cwmbelan, in a secluded wildflower meadow on a 60-acre farm.

The site is chilled-out in the best way: it’s off-grid so digital detoxes are pretty much a requirement during stays, and each pitch has its own firepit and log seating along with a private compost loo (cleaned every day and kitted out with loo roll and sanitiser). There are a couple of shower shacks on site too, and they're only shared between a handful of guests so there shouldn't be any need to queue.

The farm has plenty of paths heading off through woodlands and moorlands – some with spectacular views towards the Cambrian mountains. Owner Suzi teaches at a local riding stables so can sort pony trekking for those who'd like their views to come with a soundtrack of pattering hooves.

Guests are well served when it comes to eats, with locally sourced barbecue meat, picnic hampers, lunch hampers and breakfast butties available if required (order these as an extra when booking your pitch). The folk on site are always happy to make recommendations for local bites and drinks too. Llanidloes (a hive for independent retailers) is three and a half miles away; several footpaths lead to town directly from the farm.

A flushing toilet, a washing machine and tumble dryer are all available at the main house; guests also have access to a well-stocked washing-up area with tea towels and washing-up liquid. No need to lug water around though: the thoughtful folk here will bring it over to you.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Due to the hilly nature of the site, it is only suitable for tents.

Coronavirus update: unfortunately the site is currently unable to provide hampers.

Suzie, Joe & sons are warm and friendly and have created a cosy camping spot in the Cambrian mountains. Each of the pitches has a firepit, personal loo, are spatially generous & surrounded by wild grass. The gas fired showers are hot and there are facilities for food storage, charging electronics etc. The site is locatied nearby to many activities, walks and amazing scenery. If you can't live without your phone there is strong 4G signal. Suzie is great with the kids providing activites such as bubbles and sheep feeding activites. Site is peaceful and exceptionally clean. We really enjoyed our stay, and our daughter loved the nightly ritual of toasting the complementary marshmellows over the fire! Great value for money, would recommend in a heartbeat, thanks Suzie, Joe & Co!

Everything! Very quiet site with friendly owners who couldn't do enough to make our stay enjoyable. The kids loved meeting the animals, blowing giant bubbles and feeding the sheep. The local nesting red kites kept the kids entertained for hours trying to get them to eat some bacon. Such a beautiful place to be!

Everything, it’s a perfect little site in a beautiful part of Wales. It’s clean and tidy with the essential facilities that you need. The hosts are very welcoming and accommodating.

We have a little boy with additional needs and for us, having a space that he can feel free in and be able to run and explore was brilliant. We felt that we had true family time without worry when we came to stay.

    We stayed from 29th May - 3rd June 2021

Camping at Belan Bluebells was a dream!
From the moment we arrived we felt chilled - Suzi met us on the drive and showed us to our pitch in Merlin's Field. Barrows were provided to cart things from the car as no cars on site which meant the beauty of the site was preserved and safe for the kids.
Firewood, firepit and BBQ pack were all ready on arrival including marshmallows to toast!
Suzi and her family were on hand to help with any request - including freezing our ice blocks for us and defrosting meat for the BBQ in their microwave!
We had our own composting toilet on site and access to hot (yes, everytime!) showers for which we never had to queue. The facilities were always clean and we love that they were eco-friendly too.
The site is small but beautiful in a great setting, meadow around each pitch creates enough privacy to enjoy peace and quiet but close enough to other families that our children could play safely with other children.
Suzi let the children help feed the friendly lambs and had great knowledge about the local area; places to visit, eat and tips for hidden gems!
We watched the red kites fly and dive over the site and even fed them tit bits which they swooped to collect from the ground - amazing!
Lovely walks locally, a fab one down into Llanidloes where (if you go an a day other than bank holiday!) you can find lovely pubs, shops and cafe's all with a warm welcome.
Elan Valley is just a short drive away and a must visit - the scenery is fantastic! The beach at Borth was fab too with a great fish and chip shop on the way out of town.
We loved staying at this site so much we stayed an extra night. We will definitely be back to visit again and hope the sun shines as it did this week!

Excellent small family run camp site with lovely large separated pitches with camp fires surrounded by log seats, own compost toilets with named chalk board outside, 2 shower, water tap and recycling area. Children could play without worrying as enclosed but large enough for them to still feel as if they had freedom and cars stay at designated area. Lots of spectacular red kites flying over head and diving down to collect food was a lovely sight. Owners were friendly and welcoming, gave plenty of advise on places to visit/eat and walk, my children also enjoyed playing with the resident children, Monte was a lovely polite little boy. I would 100% recommend this camp site to friends and family, we will be back for sure one of the best sites we have visited, Thank you for making our holiday an enjoyable one!

    Disliked:

Nothing site related, make sure you take appropriate sleep wear as can get very cold in the early hours luckily we took this advise from another review so were ok!

Local attractions

The site’s set up to have a minimal impact on wildlife, so maintain the theme by getting closer to some of the region's impressive birds of prey at the red kite feeding station 20 minutes' drive away in Rhayader, and at the Dyfi Osprey project 45 minutes away on the edge of Snowdonia National Park.

The Cambrian mountains make a splendid setting for lengthy hikes and mountain bike expeditions, and there are more scenic explores to be had in the Elan Valley (half an hour) and Hafren Forest (35 minutes). For water-based adventures it's a mere 15 minutes to Clywedog dam (the tallest concrete dam in the United Kingdom) and its reservoir for sailing and paddleboarding, or you can seek out the source of the River Severn (20 minutes away in Plynlimon) in for wild swims.

Don’t ignore proximity to seaside havens either… it’s 45 minutes to Aberystwyth and its museum, funicular and Vale of Rheidol Railway, and 50 minutes to the resort village of Borth, where there’s a pretty beach, a beachfront pub and an ice cream parlour for treats.
