  • Well-equipped pods on the banks of the River Irfon near Builth Wells
  • A 15-minute drive to Royal Welsh Showground; Brecon Beacons 30 mins
  • Fishing and paddleboarding from the site's mile of river frontage
Filled your car with fishing gear so there’s no space left for a tent? Riding the brilliant biking roads of Mid Wales and looking for an overnight base? Or maybe you just like the comfort that comes from having a roof over your head during your rural break? Make your way to Powys River Pods, a rural site with pods 10 minutes' drive from Builth Wells. Just a little way off the A483, it's also motorcycle-friendly. With over a mile of private river frontage to its name, this quiet spot is a particular treat for fishing guests, who’ll be able to settle down right here on site to fish for trout, salmon, grayling and sewin. You’ll be able to launch paddleboards here too (with kit hire and instruction available on site), and the surrounding area is packed with other outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and wildlife spotting. Fill your days with as many activities as you like, safe in the knowledge that you’ll not have to expend any energy getting your accommodation sorted back at base. Each of the wooden pods here is ready to move into, with bed linen and towels provided to keep your packing list short (or give you more space for fishing gear…) Each cosy pod has its own ensuite bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen area (with a fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster), plus handy extras like heating and a TV. Outside, there’s a picnic table and a barbecue so you can spend your evenings tending the grill while soaking up the lovely views out over the river and the surrounding meadows and woods.

Local attractions

Fishing is a top pick here, unsurprisingly – and as well as the river on site there are other good spots nearby along the Wye or Usk, or up in the Elan Valley (40 minutes' drive away). Not that it’s all about the fishing, of course – the Elan Valley is also a fabulous place for a walk, and there are heaps of excellent routes to follow in the Brecon Beacons National Park (half an hour). Horse riding, mountain bike trails and various watersports can all be organised in the local area too – but if all that sounds a bit tiring, there are more leisurely options too. The Red Kite Feeding Station (25 minutes) is a great place to see these fabulous birds up close, or you could peruse the many bookshops in Hay-on-Wye (40 minutes) or head underground at the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (50 minutes). Staying a bit more local, it’s always worth checking what’s on at the Royal Welsh Showground (15 minutes) – it hosts hundreds of events each year as well as the flagship Royal Welsh Show in the summer.
