A place for a barbecue and a bonfire in the woods. (added by grykowala 30 may 2023)

  • Small peaceful site at a Powys working sheep farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Builth Wells and Royal Welsh Showground
  • Close to River Wye and Wye Valley Walk; firepit with wood supplied
Why is the location of Cwm Wye Camping such an excellent one? Well, it’s flanked by a mature oak wood for shade, privacy and general wildlife-rich surroundings, and – as the name suggests – it’s very close to the banks of the River Wye, making it a good base for those tackling the Wye Valley Walk or just hoping for riverside rambles… With the Epynt Way and Elan Valley close by too, a stay on this Powys working sheep farm should hold plenty of attractions for countryside visitors – but it’s also a convenient spot, with both Newbridge on Wye and Builth Wells within a 10-minute drive for those times when you need a shop, a pub or a takeaway. The Royal Welsh Showground is about 10 minutes’ drive away as well, making this a handy base for those attending events over there. Pitches at this small site are fairly simple in style, but have access to a good clutch of facilities including a washing-up area, an LPG-heated shower and a couple of compost toilets. There’s also a seating area with a firepit where you can catch up with your fellow guests, swap tips and keep warm (a wood store is provided for guests to use free of charge, so you won’t need to lug your own along). Cwm Wye Camping is a member of the Greener Camping Club, so if you’re already a member don’t forget to tick the correct box on your booking to get your discount (and you can add membership too if you’d like to sign up for more eco-friendly adventures…)

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We recommend this absolute gem of a small greener camping club site. Very remote in terms of traffic and noise pollution, but close to Builth, Newbridge and Llandrindod. We were extremely fortunate to have this site to ourselves for 3 nights in September, and we enjoyed an unspoilt starry sky and nice walks. The facilities comprise a rustic but fully satisfying setup for showering and washing the dishes, and two adjacent, very clean compost toilets. These and generous areas for sitting, barbecues and campfire are located in a shaded woodland. A short walk down the end of the site leads to the Wye Valley Walk footpath. The sloped campsite has several pitches that are flattened and filled with woodchips.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The walk along the river Wye was beautiful on the day we arrived (before the rain came!). The hosts could not have been more helpful when our camper van got stuck on the way to the camping field. They allowed us to park on their hard standing late in the evening, and the use of their facilities also. Cannot thank them enough for their kindness to us in a difficult situation. The wood at the edge of the site is ideal for exploring and adventures for young campers.

Disliked: The grass slopes to the camping field, and the relatively basic facilities.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Cwm Wye is such a lovely site. Really ‘back to nature’, with trees all around. Everything else you’d need is there - a sink, compost loos and a shower. There’s an amazing area with a fire pit in the woods. All wood was provided which was a really nice touch. A truly peaceful place and very friendly owners. Recommended!

Disliked: Pretty sloped, but resolved with levelling ramps if in a campervan. Shower curtain may leave you showing a little more than you had planned as it blows in the wind 😂

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Fantastic service! nice and helpful. quiet place with access to hot water (shower) and toilet. A place for a barbecue and a bonfire in the woods and walking paths near the river at a low price. A perfect place to unwind.

Disliked: it would be nice to have 2 tree swings for the kids.

Local attractions

Even if you’re not tackling the full 136-mile length of the Wye Valley Walk, your walking boots are likely to be in for a good workout around here. You could, of course, just choose a section of the long-distance path to wander along, or you could take a gentle stroll around Cors y Llyn National Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive). The Elan Valley (25 minutes) makes a great destination for a day or two of walking – it’s got about 70 square miles of gorgeous countryside to wander through, with lakes and dams to focus on, and lots of wildlife to spot. Stop by at the Red Kite Feeding Station in Rhayader (20 minutes) en route to have a closer encounter with these fabulous birds. Perhaps a wild swim too? Head to FARMERS' Welsh Lavender Ltd (25 minutes) for that, and a café. For other days out nearby, see what’s on at the Royal Welsh Showground (10 minutes), take a wander around the streets of Victorian-era Llandrindod Wells (15 minutes), perhaps stopping in at the National Cycle Museum, or keep the kids busy with a trip to the pool in Builth Wells or some indoor play time at Quackers (both 10 minutes).
