  • Scenic orchard site in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Hiking/biking from the site; a five-minute walk to Talybont reservoir
  • Restaurant, bike shed for secure storage and packed lunches on request
If you’re in the market for a hol that almost feels like putting down roots, settle in for a sweet stay at YHA Brecon Beacons Danywenallt, a family-friendly site 20 minutes from Brecon in Powys. Set up tents in the on-site orchard and feel free to expect a blissfully peaceful stay – there’s no parking next to the pitches, so no cars rumbling by to interrupt the quiet calm. Not only that, but the local wildlife isn’t scurrying away from revving engines, so keep eyes peeled for frogs, newts and moles (who might make the ground a little uneven). The site’s in the Brecon Beacons National Park, so there’s plenty hereabouts to keep the car-free vibe going as long as possible. Guests can walk straight from the pitches to the ridges that lead to Pen-y-Fan, or saunter five minutes down the road to the shores of Talybont reservoir for mountain biking trails (bikes can be stored securely on site) and trout fishing. Anyone with a big appetite should remember to call in to the on-site restaurant to pick up a packed lunch for the road (request in advance), or to bag a spot at the table and help themselves to the breakfast buffet. There’s a supper club in the evenings too, and a campfire area where everyone can gather to tell stories.

Local attractions

Active types would be well served with a stay round here: as well as the hikes and bikes to be expected in the Brecon Beacons National Park, an activity centre a 20-minute drive away has indoor rock climbing and bouldering, an indoor zipline, abseiling and rope bridges to conquer. Prefer a more sedentary getaway? The site’s within half an hour of a host of farmers' markets, so devote several mornings (if possible) to rambling around at Brecon, Abergavenny and Talgarth – just check what days they’re running before arranging travel. Dive below the earth’s surface at the National Showcaves Centre 40 minutes away, to walk behind a 40-foot waterfall and find out how Bone Cave got its name. If that doesn’t appeal, dive into history instead with stops at the Big Pit National Coal Museum and Blaenavon Ironworks – both 40 minutes away – or hitch a ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway, half an hour from base. Easy days for families with young kids in tow are a cinch too: start with the petting zoo, pig races, horse riding and paddleboats at Cantref Adventure Farm (20 minutes away), then settle in for the 35-minute drive to Garwnant Visitor Centre where there are woodland and sculpture trails to follow and family-friendly mountain biking routes.
