The beaches of the Ceredigion coast are famously rather fabulous – and you’ll have easy access to at least three of the finest when staying at The Paddocks - Cardigan Bay. This rural location (10 minutes’ drive from the village of Rhydlewis) is about five minutes’ drive from the beaches of Tresaith, Penbryn and Aberporth, and with dolphin-spotting hotspot New Quay about 15 minutes away too.
That location alone makes this a great spot for a family holiday – and the accommodation makes it even more enticing. You’ll be staying in a spacious caravan (sleeping up to six people) that’s been set up on an eight-acre smallholding where your neighbours will be the horses, ponies, sheep, pigs and friendly pet cow that call this place home. Kids are welcome to meet the animals, and you’ll be able to bring well-behaved dogs along too.
The caravan’s been placed in its own half-acre paddock that’s been securely fenced so kids and dogs can have a safe space for running about in. Outdoor furniture is provided too, so you’ll have somewhere to settle with a drink while keeping an eye on their antics and/or tending the firepit and barbecue (provided).
Inside, it’s all been set up with much of the kit you’ll need for a fab family holiday – beds are made up, you’ll be provided with towels and there’s heating to make sure you’ll stay warm in all weathers. As well as two bedrooms there’s also a living space (with sofa bed and TV), a bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen (with fridge, freezer, cooker, microwave and all the utensils you need for making your meals).

Bring your beach gear – there are lots of lovely sandy stretches along this part of the coast. The beaches of Aberporth, Penbryn and Tresaith are all about five minutes’ drive away, and once you’ve had your fill of those, there’s still Llangrannog (15 minutes’ drive), Gwbert, Mwnt (both 20 minutes), Poppit Sands (25 minutes)…
A visit to one of these, or a walk along the coast path, may allow you to spot the dolphins and other marine animals that live in Cardigan Bay, but for a better chance you’ll need to head to New Quay (15 minutes) to board a dolphin-spotting boat trip. For other animal encounters, try the Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park or Welsh Wildlife Centre (25 minutes).
Elsewhere nearby you hire paddleboards or kayaks from Aberporth beach, admire some sturdy engineering at the Internal Fire Museum of Power (five minutes) or learn about one of the area’s more unusual modes of water transport at The National Coracle Centre (15 minutes).
