Tyr Ffynnon Farm: Sunset after a cloudy day

General

  • Peaceful dog-friendly site with views over Cardigan Bay
  • A 35-minute walk from New Quay; footpath to the Wales Coast Path
  • Shops and pubs in New Quay; playground and dog exercise area on site

Raring to go dolphin-spotting on the Wales Coast Path or fishing on a boat trip from New Quay? Very well – here’s Tyr Ffynnon Farm, an advantageous base for such coastal adventures. With 180-degree views over Cardigan Bay and a location just 35 minutes’ walk from New Quay, it would have been a shame to keep this quiet 38-acre working sheep farm for sheep only.

Now, families and dogs (on leads) are welcome to come and relax at the elevated peninsular spot. There are plenty of walking areas away from the traffic – and just a couple of hundred metres from the entrance, there’s a public footpath where guests can join the Wales Coast Path. Spectacular views and the chance to spot dolphins… yes please.

The coastal path passes through lively New Quay, where activities such as boat trips, sailing, fishing and watersports are on the agenda. Also called Cei Newydd, New Quay has a pretty harbour, sandy beaches and a sound selection of shops, pubs and restaurants for all your foodie desires.

The pièce de resistance at Tyr Ffynnon Farm surely has to be the sublime sea-view sunsets that can be seen from the site. Other ace features include the modern shower and toilet facilities, which have hot electric showers, wash basins, toilets, electric hand dryers and electric sockets for hairdryers (in the ladies’ only) and a shaver point (in the gents’). Those with mini family members will also be pleased to find a playground and a fenced dog exercise area on site.

Bonus points – the peaceful, friendly site is 20 minutes’ drive from Aberaeron, 35 minutes from Cardigan and 45 minutes from Aberystwyth.

Please note

A cable measuring at least 25 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

The view was lovely and great location to New Quay

    Disliked:

Showers had no holders to put soap on etc and the toilets had no toilet paper holders and no bins! Slightly dirty.
Ground wasn’t the best, a lot of stones and uneven surface.

From the manager...

Sorry that you felt that your stay wasn't up to your expectations although pleased that you loved the location. Also sorry that we had to ask you to move your tent as you had pitched over onto someone else's site.
Scoring seemed rather unfair however:
Accommodation 1/5-we provide no accommodation, you bring your own!
Facilities/activities 1/5 we clearly state that this is a basic site that provides no activities other than a play area for the children. We cater for those looking for a peaceful, restful break in a beautiful setting within very close proximity to lovely New Quay.
Customer services 1/5 Nigel always gives of his best and will bend over backwards to help anyone out. It would have been interesting to learn where this was lacking.
Child friendliness 3/5 we provide a play area for the children and very large areas where they can play safely
Cleanliness 1/5 Facilities are checked at a minimum of every 2 hours. Perhaps your visit to the showers/toilets directly followed users that had made a mess?? Having said that, you mention only 'slightly' dirty in your review which certainly shouldn't warrant such a low score.
The loo roll holders have been replaced 3 times now by mishandling. We are still waiting for jumbo roll holders to be delivered that have been promised by mid this week. We could replace with conventional holders yet again in the meantime, but this would be foolish as they would undoubtedly be yanked off of the wall within a few days as previous experience has told us.
We will look into installing some in-shower holders.
We are making improvements all of the time and any suggestions are always welcome.

Fairly long walk into New Quay

From the manager...

Thank you for your positive review. So pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and hope to see you again next year when even further improvements will have been made.
Just for additional info for potential guests:
Beautiful New Quay is 5 minutes by car, 30 minutes walk by straight forward route and 40 minutes via the stunning coastal path which has a lookout shelter mid way where you can sit and gaze out over the ocean dolphin spotting.
New Quay itself has 2 large car parks costing £3 per full day and one smaller council run car park which, I believe is a little more expensive.

We had an absolutely fabulous time. I have been camping for 20 years with my children, and this was the best site we have ever stayed on. Beautiful location, with easy access to the costal path and a half hour walk into New Quay along the most beautiful route.
Camp site was well spaced out with plenty of room for your pitch. The toilet and shower blocks are brand new and to a good standard. Levels of cleanliness were high. The owner and his son were extremely friendly and helpful.
The sunset is really breath-taking, as is the view of the sea! Absolutely amazing site, we will definitely be back.

Chemical toilet waste position could do with upgrading, the road upto site from main road is very tight, but did not spoil holiday

From the manager...

So pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us.
The chemical disposal point we inherited from the previous owners. It does serve the purpose but the position can be slightly awkward for some people. This is to be addressed ready for next season.
The access road is a council maintained country lane with passing places as can be expected in the country and representative of many of the sites in the area. To be perfectly honest the outstandingly stunning views and total sense of peace and serenity far outweigh a very short 0.8 mile country road.
Thank you so much for your very positive review and hope to see you again next year by which time even more improvements will have been made.

We will be continuing throughout the winter months to make improvements and will certainly look into the possibility of installing an electric car charger.

Local attractions

Days out in Aberaeron (20 minutes’ drive) – a regency town with a Georgian harbour and multi-coloured houses – could be spent taking yet more coastal walks, tucking into tapas and scallops around the harbour or licking a honey-flavoured ice cream by the sea.

Strolls or fishing along the river Teifi might make it onto your itinerary in Cardigan (35 minutes). The town’s castle is on the riverside and has its own escape room. Another historical spot is in St Dogmaels (40 minutes), where there are abbey ruins with medieval roots.

Aberystwyth (45 minutes) is much more than a university town. It’s also home to the National Library of Wales, a free museum and heaps of interesting shops.

As for sublime coastal spots, Penbryn beach (25 minutes) is accessed through woodlands from the Wales Coast Path. A short detour from here will get you to Tresaith Waterfall (25 minutes).
