  • Quiet, family-friendly smallholding with animals and a veg garden
  • Under 15 minutes’ drive from New Quay and Llangrannog beaches
  • Barbecues, campfires and pets allowed; 10 minutes to the coast
It’s a quandary, eh? You want somewhere quiet for peaceful hols in your self-contained campervan, motorhome or caravan, but you’d also like to be close enough to the coast and bustling seaside towns… Not so with Bryngolau Farm near New Quay, a 10-minute drive from the busy seaside resort and the hiker-friendly Wales-wide seaside path but set just far enough away in the Ceredigion countryside for quiet vibes. Staying at this smallholding gives guests access to inland strolls too, whether on routes just outside the grounds or in the large veg garden. Ask if you can dig up some produce to go with the fresh eggs laid by the free-range hens for supper or an alfresco lunch on Llangrannog beach (15 minutes). There’s also plenty of space at each pitch for a picnic – the number of guests here is limited to keep an exclusive, low-key feel and so that co-owners Babette and Terri have time to give everyone the warmest of welcomes. You’re also likely to get an exuberant hello from Lady, the farm’s friendly sheepdog, and can bring your own pup along to the pet-friendly park as well. There’s no toilet block at the smallholding, but water and electric hook-ups are provided with the pitch fee. Just as a head’s up, the owners ask that you communicate via text (a phone number will be provided with your booking) rather than knocking on the farmhouse door.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The view

Disliked: Site over booked. Pitches to small not enough room for a awning. No one to tell you where anything is. There was a party in the barn just behind where your pitch is. Which went on until 5am.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: View of the sea

Disliked: Very small site. Not big enough to put awnings up. No one to see you on. Not told where anything is. We booked for two pitches to be together. And we were not as the site was over booked. Would not go again.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Location: close to New Quay & Aberaeron

Disliked: When we arrived there was nobody to greet us. Despite being asked to communicate via text & NOT to knock the farmhouse door we had no other option but to do this. We were told to choose any pitch, then afterwards they took the name of the booking. There is a barn on site which was used for a party by the daughter as the owners weren’t there. Site rules are no noise after 12am, at 2am party was still in full swing & other people heard it until 5.30am too. A small site which was crammed with not much space between ‘pitches’ (fire & safety regulations would have had a field day). Not impressed I’m afraid as although I text and left a voicemail for the owners regarding the party (if we had known this we wouldn’t have made the booking). I’m yet to receive a reply

Local attractions

The main attraction hereabouts has to be the beaches: travel to Ceredigion's coast for a chance to see dolphins and seals while on boat trips or simply to lie back on the sands of New Quay (10 minutes’ drive) and Llangrannog (15 minutes). In the hinterlands, head to Cenarth Falls (20 minutes) and see the coracles (unusual-looking round rafts) in the museum or attempt to reel in some salmon at the rushing river. The displays are equally as interesting in the West Wales Museum of Childhood (20 minutes), a small space with retro toys to eye up. Learn a little more about the past at the 900-year-old Cardigan Castle (25 minutes) or in the slightly newer Llanerchaeron stately house, an 18th-century mansion built by famed architect John Nash. Rather roam? The Welsh Wildlife Centre (35 minutes) on the bird-rich Teifi Marshes is fab for a wander round, as is the lush forest in Bwlch Nant yr Arian, which also has a visitor centre organising daily red kite feeding sessions (55 minutes).
