  • Peaceful, off-grid camping meadow in the Ceredigion countryside
  • Aberaeron Beach 35 minutes’ drive; New Quay Honey Farm 40 minutes
  • Dark-skies site with great stargazing; eggs for sale on site
Yearning for an off-grid family camping adventure? One tucked under ancient oak trees in a dark-skies area – and within half an hour’s drive of the beach? You might have hit the jackpot with a stay at Wild Welsh Camping, a peaceful Ceredigion retreat on a wildflower camping meadow with spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes. A small number of mown grass pitches are scattered across the field – with ample room for two small tents if required – and while firepits and barbecues are permitted, they must be off the ground. Simple facilities include a wooden shower block powered by solar lighting, three composting toilets and a drinking water tap. You can buy free-range eggs for a breakfast fry up from the site owners, and essential supplies can be acquired from the local shop and café (two minutes’ drive/15 minutes' walk) in Llanfair. For major shopping trips, Lampeter (15 minutes) is your best bet. As there is no electricity on site, bring torches and spare batteries with you – and of course it’s thanks to the lack of light pollution in the area that you stand a decent chance of watching the Milky Way dance across the sky on cloudless nights.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Excellent quiet little site, very well maintained, washrooms are very clean, showers are nice and hot. The pitches are well spaced out so even at busy times you can be assured of plenty of space. Hosts were very friendly and helpful.

Local attractions

Travelling with the kids? Do something different and go panning for gold at National Trust - Dolaucothi (20 minutes’ drive), on the site of a former ancient Roman gold mine, or watch the bees making honey in industrial quantities at New Quay Honey Farm (40 minutes). Younger offspring will most likely be happy to meet and feed the ponies, goats and alpacas at Fantasy Farm Park (35 minutes). If you’re all content pottering about on foot, take to the forest paths at Longwood Community Woodland (five minutes), or combine a circumnavigation of the lake at Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest Visitor Centre (50 minutes) with feeding red kites and honing your skills on mountain-biking trails. Perhaps the coast is calling? Cardigan Bay has many sandy spots, so you’ll surely find something to please everybody. There are frequent sightings of dolphins and porpoises in the waters off New Quay (45 minutes), and you can sail or swim off the town’s Harbour Beach. Backed by brightly painted cottages, Aberaeron Beach (35 minutes) is the choice for bodyboarders and surfers.
